Serenity. Population: 1,500.
Nestled amongst the evergreen pines, this quiet logging town cannot be more aptly named. Here, the folks are friendly, the scenery is peaceful, and the most excitement you can get is at the local highschool football games.
But even the smallest of towns have their secrets.
Unknown to most, Serenity is the home for a multitude of creatures thought to exist in fiction. Werewolves prowl among the shadowy thicket, mermaids slumber beneath the depths of Lake Honeystalk, vampires walk amongst the crowded nightly streets--all every bit as real as they are dangerous. Their existence is a secret thanks to the Watchers, a clandestine group tasked with ensuring the safety of Serenity. But just how long can this peace last?
Humans able to transform into bestial wolves. Though they are able to shapeshift at will, their power wanes and waxes with the moon. They tend to gather in familial packs, with the lone wolf being a rarity, and often dwell on the outskirts of town. Though Serenity houses a few packs, the largest and most prominent is the Remaris Pack. There are two major ways of becoming a werewolf: either be bitten or be born. Though they are physically strong and swift, werewolves are susceptible to pure silver and wolf's bane.
VAMPIRESUndead creatures with an otherworldly charm and taste for blood. Though they feed on a main diet of blood, it doesn't necessarily have to be human and they usually have to feast once a month at the least. They're territorial beings, often hostile the company of other vampires, but thrive under the company of other creatures. If the need arises, however, vampires will gather together. They're incredibly swift, strong, and practically ageless, but they're burned by sunlight, pure silver, and can be killed with a stake through the heart. It's impossible to be born a vampire, with being bitten the only known cause for turning into one.
MERMAIDSAble to turn human at will, the true form of these creatures contain a fishtail and gills. They're less inclined to rescue drowning princes from ships. If anything, they're the ones during the drowning. They're alluring and seductive, taking pleasure in manipulating those they find lesser to fall into their murky homes. Mermaid settle in rivers or lakes, with a multitude of collected treasures often gathered in the bottom. They're incredibly fast swimmers, able to breathe underwater, and can manipulate liquids to some degree. However, they cannot stay out of water for a number of days lest they perish.
WITCHESHumans that, through spells and magics, have grown far more powerful than one can believe. Often, witches gather in covens with one leader, usually an older or more powerful witch. It's not uncommon, however, to find a witch working individually. Those that work alone are usually accompanied by an animal familiar. While not technically immortal, powerful witches tend to age more slowly than normal humans. Witches hold power over an arsenal of spells, whether good or bad, and hold a psychic link with a familiar if they have one. However, they are susceptible with the same weaknesses as humans hold.
HUMANSTake a look in the mirror. Are you human? Maybe. What about the people around you? Possible. What about the people you trust? Partly.
THE WATCHERSA secretive group of skilled fighters comprised of the different creatures that inhabit Serenity. Their duty is to ensure that the existence of supernatural beings remains a secret, and to resolve any conflicts. Positions are traditionally handed down from family member to family member (or a chosen heir, in the case for some), but handpicked members are not that uncommon.
