does all energy come from ether? is the entire known world powered by the blood of people, or are there other methods of energy which are used like fossil fuels?

just curious about this world, its very well thought out with a cool mythology

@Mercenary LordNo, not all the ether in the world comes from people. White ether, which is what is used as the world's main power source, comes from animals and can be synthesized.

Thanks, btw!

@Mercenary Lord Combustion is not a thing. Heat and light both require ether to happen. Flame doesn't exist. Most fossil fuels are burned, so they wouldn't be used. The workshop forge, as I've imagined it, probably uses some form of ether or something but is probably called "coals" all the same. You might be able to harness chemical reactions of other types for power, and boiling water with ether-generated heat to make steam can give steam power. So much of it is blood or extracted from blood, I think. Animals slaughtered for food can have their ether extracted first, ad there might even be a way to keep it being from so much pain for them? It's possible that future research (or current but little publicized research) has discovered ways to put one's own ether into a storage state, for later use, or something less...ah...dramatic.

@Lovejoy Actually not all that much. She avoids black like the plague, though. As well as anything too intensely colored. She favors fire-tones, so red, orange, yellow -- nothing overwhelmingly bright, though, more like the soft colors in that other pic that I posted -- and then she's really fond of desaturated greens and blues, which accent her hair and eyes. She does like and wear white, but not predominantly. More for balance so she's not too bright. And she likes a variety of patterns, but tends to wear things that are tight about the waist, and either loose or somehow emphasizing shoulders/bust on top, and then the wide pants or something loose and flowy on the bottom, so that it can flare out. Because the best way to look like have a figure is to accent the narrowest part of your body and add to the widest part. ^.^

Okay, it just kind of seems like a downward spiral of energy/resources, kind of like how the Earth is running out of fossil fuels.

like for example, you say that ether can be synthesized, but does that synthesis violate the 2nd law of thermodynamics? Is thermodynamics even a thing here?

I'm not trying to be problematic or anything, it just is weird to me that this world seems like a condensed form of the inevitable heat death of the universe

@shylarahCool! Though, she does need to wear the black inquisitor's uniform when she's on duty. She is able to accentuate it though. For example, Ragnar wears a white fur cloak with his.

@Lovejoy oh of course, though she does have that extra armor, as mentioned.

@Mercenary Lord I was informed that science is wonky, but I imagine thermodynamics is more a matter of energy and less one of heat. I would think that chemical reactions and using magic to turn something with a high ether potential into a form that can be used would both be effective.

Yeah, I don't really give a shit about the scientific accuracy of this world :p. This isn't meant to be hard scifi. I just like the idea of a world without the concept of Fire, so here we are! I wager we won't be focusing too much on the technical aspects of things during the RP itself. We'll be too easy dealing with *other* stuff... >:)

@Lovejoy GACK missed half my post. accentuating it...she probably wears some things that match any other colors on the uniform, when not out on missions (so like training and stuff, and light duty things, or formal occasions). If she could get away with it, she'd replace the red stitching with orange, but she probably can't. And a white or dappled blue-gray cloak would be helpful, especially since it's harder to see from a distance against the snow. On duty in the field, practicality comes first, of course.

Hm...honestly if you have some way of creating ether from nothing then the rest of the science more or less falls into place afaik

Anyway I'll stop being a hard as about this, sorry guys

It's a divine gift, dude. From part of that supermassive thing that did battle with that other supermassive thing. If you really want something semi-concrete, let's go with this: the heat of the sun has to go somewhere. The Ice god dude didn't move the whole planet farther away, so it must be absorbing that energy somehow. All/some of that energy is being channeled into the ether the Fragmented Pantheon has bestowed upon the life of the world. So we basically have solar powered blood.

Ironically, this is an anti-heat death scenario, so far as this one planet is concerned.

@Mercenary Lord nah, because there's still no combustion or flames... it makes my head hurt thinking about it too much, but I think I've figured out how to work with it. *amused* But as an amateur scientist, I have to point out that "something from nothing" on a large scale is problematic, but there actually is sort of a way to violate the laws of thermodynamics irl on the subatomic scale, with negative particles and such. Particle physics are even better than cosmic physics. ^.^

As a note, this vid about the science of Portal mentions it, explains it a little, and also happens to be pretty awesome. I may have watched it through again instead of just locating it. <.<

Personally, I've always figured settings with magic have a type of energy that we either don't have, or don't know how to harness, and it can be converted into and out of much the way the other kinds can. ^.^

Oh for sure making something from nothing is a abhorrent violation of everything science, but in fantasy worlds a lot of the time its better to break one big rule than to break a bunch of little rules

ergo Draken's description of a divine gift makes the most sense

in a weird sort of way, this world seems heavily mythological in a sense, kind of a like a story we'd tell around campfires. The ice-covered map adds to that feeling as well

@Lovejoy Yeah, I've hit a small bit of writer's block, so it may be that my character sheet won't be ready until tomorrow. However, I will persist.

NOOOOOO

You can't do that, Rodion is 100% a heretic. <.<

Also, can you guys alert me when you start talking about the science of the world, especially when it concerns ether. The reason that I ask for this is because Rodion, I feel, is the most likely of our group to completely break the power scaling, whether I want him to or not. And I need this stuff in order to help keep him and his creations in line.

@Drakey Galahad isnt unemotional, he experiences and shows plenty of emotions, primarily irritation and exasperation. But yes, he's not incredibly outspoken, unless he's criticizing someone.

Ok, well then I would still imagine that Rodion's complete lack of emotions (at least to anyone who isn't Ziotea) would be disconcerting.

Tatiana is finally moved to the character tab with some updated character relations. I haven't gotten to everyone, but to those I have finished, let me know if you'd like anything different. Other than the few that remain, the demon summoning needs a bit of work with Lovejoy, but then I'll be all good.
