Maisy nodded, following the woman back to town. She seemed able to avoid the monsters roaming around the field easily, and by shadowing her they were bale to avoid most of the fights.
They spilt up in town, the woman pointing out a particular NPC and telling her that the man would offer a quest that would help her get stronger. Maisy nodded as they parted ways, hoping she didn't do anything too dangerous as she spoke to the man, a
large, one armed man in heavy armor. It was actually pretty easy to tell he was an NPC. Maisy though she had seen him before, standing in the same spot with the same forlorn look on his face, as he had been when she'd first logged in. Other players were around, huddled together or just waiting, but he didn't seem to be reacting at all. He was like a statue effected in the middle of a hospital waiting room, looking coldly over the boarded and worried people around him.
She walked up and he immediately locked eyes with her and started speaking a prepaid speech. "Greetings, young adventure. Not many have the fortified to pursue the path of knighthood these days."
Maisy looked around. There were about twenty knights just hanging around the town square.
"If you truly wish to do battle with evil, you must prove yourself. Bring me the hides of three of the Wild Wolves in the field, and maybe I'll think you have what it takes." The man continued. A text box popped up in front of her eyes, asking her to accept the quest. She accepted, and then another box popped up saying the quest was completed. "Hmmm, maybe your not so worthless after all." He continued as she looked on confused. Oh, right, she'd gotten those last night.
"Very well, I'll teach you some tricks, might just keep you alive longer." He said, and a series of boxes popped up, tutorialising his to distribute skill point. As she read, and clicked off the last one, the one armed man continued. 'Now, how will you train?"
She opened up the menu like the tutorial described and gawked at the skill points she'd accumulated. She was level 6 already, just from wandering around beating monster to death and doing this one quest.
She distributed her points in a few skills. One was for lance users specifically, a fast charge forward that enveloped the user in blue energy. At level three, e skill turned away non-magical projectiles, and could be used up to three times in quick succession. Another skill she bought was a general knights skill, where the user charged up a heavy swing with their weapon. The last two points she spent on a skill called fortify, which increased her defence in exchange for speed when used.
The man looked down apprasisingly for a moment. "All right, you seem almost like a real Knight now. You might be able to handle something a little harder than the either trainees. There've been a series of monster attacks on the forest road, been tearing up our trade caravans. If you can put down whatever beast is causing problems I'll almost consider you a success story."
Maisy accepted the quest and headed out into the field, down the forest road. A few of the players hanging out in town looked at her like she was crazy.
