I don't know if you heard but apparently anything no in the movies and the animations are no longer considered canon. Meaning that the mountains of books we have are all considered non-canon!! WTF right?

The EU basically consisted of Mary Sue Skywalker humping the force into new planets about a hundred times while cloned blue hitlers jumped out of space to do force-drugs, and STAR SMASHERS had to come in that were star tie fighter sized but stronger than the death star that could.....

^ Pretty much how I summed my own verdict on the idea of Star Wars Episode VII.

Although I still think the comics with Darth Krayt are some of the best parts of the EU part of Star Wars.

The EU is almost entirely suffocating crappy fan fiction fodder that was only sanctioned because anything carrying the Star Wars name is an instant shoe in for a shitload of money that somehow manages to make what's fun about the movies super serious business while making it even more ridiculous, extremly dry, and boring as shit. Going to Wookipedia for any sort of reference was a nightmare and a half.

Most of the books from the late 80's and early 90's are pretty weird, to be honest. The Thrawn trilogy was good, but it seemed like EU writers couldn't help but repeat the same material over and over again.

I certainly hope there's a few nods to the EU-verse in the new movies, but I'm expecting them to break pretty cleanly with EU canon. It's heartbreaking, especially now that there will be new media that centers around the new Star Wars movies conflicting with books still set in the old EU-verse, but it was going to happen. You're not going to force JJ Abrams to write around a bunch of already-established canon, not if you expect him to work his magic properly.

On the plus side, I think JJ Abrams has a pretty good reason not to fuck these movies up, because he'd forever be known as Jar Jar Abrams if Episodes 7-9 are fucking atrocities.

People are going to hate them regardless, because nerd culture is weird. Like how people think that Into Darkness was a bad movie, because old Star Trek looked different.

I was under the impression that they are nixing the EU that came -after- Return of the Jedi, mostly because it is a mess and is contradictory. Speaking as a hardcore Star Wars fan, I can see the upside in this particular move.

Except for the Darth Krayt/Cade Skywalker storyline, I don't think too highly of the EU in the first place.

I would have liked Into Darkness better if,

A) They didn't take an Indian character and whitewash it with Benedict Cucumberface
B) It played more off the strengths of the first movie
C) If it didn't resolve every situation with some kind of violent action sequence, because even though I was never a Star Trek fan, I know that a big part of what makes the series what it is is how it treats violence as something of a last resort and the Federation's kind of about forging peace and understanding with different cultures, not Michael Baying every conflict.
D) The giant gaping fucking plothole where Kirk needs Khan's blood to survive getting pwn'd by radiation and they go on this big fucking chase to bring him in alive when there's literally dozens of torpedoes with people with the SAME FUCKING PROPERTIES as Khan sitting in the cargo hold.

Other than that, it was enjoyable, if pretty forgettable. It was the Quantum of Solace to Casino Royale, if you will.

But yeah, I think JJ Abrams pretty much was making Star Wars movies with a Star Trek coat of paint. If he did something similar with the new trilogy and was respectful to the original material, I think it'll be something I'll enjoy a lot.

I'm pretty sure they'll incorporate some of the better elements from the EU into the new trilogy such as Han and Leia's kids, Thrawn and Luke being a Jedi master.

Personally, I can't fucking dtand Abrams, I mean, let's look at his track record for making Sci-Fi cult classics.

Star Trek was boring and you could barely see any of it... Star Trek: Into Darkness had physics that broke the universe (If you can beam from one side of the galaxy to the other, then why do you need Star Ships?)

Don't get me wrong, I want this to be good, I hope to almighty god in heaven that I am talking out of my ass and that 7, 8 and 9 are the best Star Wars films ever... But good god have they given me no reason to believe that. I read this and think "Ok, so, this is being made by a man who has proven that he can't faithfully remake a cult classic series, and now, all of my favourite characters from the Expanded Universe have been confirmed to have never existed..."

Oh, I agree, a lot of shit in the expanded universe doesn't make sense, I fucking hated Death Troopers, Jango Fett worked with a Noghri Assassin 15 years before the Noghri were even discovered and left their planet... But, then we get to the stuff that actually was cool. Kyle Katarn, Mara Jade, Darth Krayt, Grand Admiral Thrawn, Garm Bel Iblis, the Yuuzhan Vong wars (Ok, some parts were kinda shit... but for the most part, it was a good idea.) Boba Fett being a total badass, The Solo children, Cade Skywalker... So many things that are good... and they say "Nope, all of it goes."

As I said before, the EU was pretty much sanctioned and paid fan fiction. I seriously doubt anyone who made the franchise cared what went into it as long as they got Mount Fuji in money back.

As gor JJ Abrams, he basically said he wanted to make Star Trek movies for people who don't watch Star Trek and I don't think he was a fan when he was picked to direct. Naming his two Star Trek movies as the only examples of his track record of butchering classics is kind of underwhelming. The dude's a good director, as far as Hollywood and most movie watchers are concerned. He's one of those guys who has a way of making a shitload of money for just about every movie he makes, and that lets him make movies he wants to, not necessarily the typical "safe bets". He's a lot like Christopher Nolan in that regard.

Besides, the internet has this horrible habit of judging things harshly before even seeing the product. I wonder how many people remember the shitstorm over Heath Ledger being cast as the Joker, for instance. It's like Ben Affleck being Batman. We don't know until the movie is out.

As well, like I mentioned, the Star Trek reboots were pretty much Star Wars movies. I'm sure it'll be fine.

I'm pretty sure the parts they're really chucking out the airlock have to do with the Vong and the Second Galactic Civil War and stuff in between those events, because it's a pain in the ass to write a movie script and have to heave to all that awkward and sometimes-conflicting canon. I think Abrams and the screenwriters need the ability to throw away parts of the EU that gum up the entire works. But he also has the freedom to -modify- things like Grand Admiral Thrawn. I suppose we'll simply have to wait and see.

If you really love that expanded universe stuff, it's still there -- the books can be had and Wookieepedia will probably keep chugging along.

I understand that it's not post IV, V, and VI but I've always been a big fan of Revan and wouldn't mind him showing up if they make other spin-off movies. (I heard there were rumors of a Boba one.) I just was always a big fan of Revan, I grew kind of attached.
