The Kingdom of Tyrisine
The Verdant KingdomLocation on map:
Black outline.Race: Almost entirely populated by Elves. Very few members of other races, often acting as merchants in major cities. The particular strain of Elves that inhabit Tyrisine are particularly pure of bloodline, but much shorter than some of their other counterparts, very rarely reaching 6 feet tall. They are lithe of build and their skin is nearly always pearly white. Their hair varies in colour, though bright red and black are the most common colours amongst the population. Eyes are either wild green, sky blue or violet, with the latter being the rarest and most valued.
Type of government: Monarchy, with the support of feudal Dukedoms and the religious, cultural and economic institutions that the nation requires to remain successful and prosperous.
Faction: Strongly supports the Galan League, and their fellow Elves.
Ruler: Queen Elsannis III of House Lamorien, who succeeded her father King Marthisian X after his death some eighteen years ago. Her kingdom has fostered stronger ties with the outside world than has ever been seen before.
Capital: Ashänti, population 150,000. Situated on the small peninsula jutting out into the sea.
Located atop a tall mountain with wide views of the sea, the capital has been a beacon of prosperity and trade for passing merchants for centuries. Much of the nation's wealth travels through this central city. It is also the base of the court and the Merchant's Guild.
Other cities: Quirth, population 53,000. Located deep within the Ashvale Forest, Quirth is the centre of Tyrisinian scholarly knowledge and religion. Its location is kept secret to all those who do not hail from the nation, and very few foreigners ever see inside. Said to be constructed from houses hewn into the trunks of colossal oak trees, the city is the centre of the Order of the Leaf, who preserve the histories, culture and traditions of the nation and the Earthwives, a caste of priestesses who devote their lives to the preservation of the faith of the Treefather.
History: Tyrisine is an old kingdom, with old ideas and traditions. Its situation on the grassy plains and heavily forested Aluriel Bay have given it open access to trade with other nations throughout the years, but apart from its cosmopolitan coastal trade cities very few foreigners have seen the interior of the nation. The nation's histories are chronicled and guarded closely in the scholarly city of Quirth, but tell of a nation which has closely guarded its treasuries and avoided war at all costs throughout its long history. There has been careful cultivation of diplomacy and trade that has allowed the nation to prosper financially while largely cutting off its own culture from all except the various other Elven nations.
The nation was founded some 500 years ago as a city state on the Ashanti Peninsula, but expanded rapidly onto the fertile plains to the south west and the dense, mysterious forests to the south east. The Elves who inhabit the land are long lived, short in stature, and slow to act or change their minds. Thus, their allegiance to the Galan League is strong and unyielding as is their love for the Elven people in general. Life in the cities is dictated by trade and is often characterised by great wealth, while the farmers on the plains and the hunters of the forests live a life unchanged for hundreds of years and mostly untouched by the wars and conflicts of the world.
To other Elves, Tyrisine may appear aloof, slow, mysterious and overly traditional and impractical. To non-Elves, the nation appears as a possibility to earn vast amounts of money by trading rare fruits and gemstones from the nation, and providing pelts, skins and cloth. The people themselves, however, would appear cold and unyielding. They are generally distrustful of foreigners, especially non-Elves.
Administration: The people of the nation are largely loyal solely to the monarch. The nation operates a system of equal succession, and so women and men both accede to the throne equally and have ruled with equal years. Power is largely feudal, delegated by the monarch to the twelve Ducal houses who see fit to administrate their own regions with the consent of the Queen and the nation. A Council of Elders is composed of various nobles and religious leaders, and advise the monarch in all matters political - especially regarding trade, which is the lifeblood of the nation's continual finances.
Religion is focused on the worship of the Treefather, a nature god who is said to be based in a Great Oak tree deep within the forest - the location of which is the Kingdom's most closely guarded secret, not privy even to foreign Elves. This religious conviction and cultural belief is key to determining the politics of Tyrisine - historically, the Verdant Kingdom has been careful in its international political machinations, avoiding war were possible and fostering cooperative if cold trade routes and channels of communication with nearby cities and kingdoms as well as those further afield. The composition of the government itself has been observed to be relatively nepotistic; only the leaders of Finance and Spirituality generally come from outside the confines of the nation's well defined aristocracy.
The composition of the Council of Elders is as follows:
i) Elsannis III, by the Grace of the Treefather, Her Most Splendid Majesty, Queen of the Great Grass Plains and the Ashvale
ii) Marïthriel of Myrth, First Chronicler of the Order of the Leaf, Preserver of the Histories and Cultures of Tyrisine
iii) Lord Yaterian of Édrassil, Duke of Edarian, Lord-Treasurer of Ashanti
iv) Yavinaa the Elder, High Priestess of the Treefather, Chief Spiritual Counsel to the Queen
v) Raelin Malthusîan the Green, First Arrow of the Queen's Army, Protector of the Forests and the Plains
vi) Lady Haelithia of Rainsmarch, Duchess of Casillian, Trade Emissary of the Queen's Splendour
vii) Princess Yaetheria, Her Most Imperious Highness, Vice-Trade Emissary of the Queen's Splendour
