Assuming a perfectly rational France, you wouldn't want either Austria nor Prussia strengthened. A balance of power Austria threatened by DOWing me.

So, you are saying that because Austria declared war, it means that at least one of you will get more powerful which, subsequently, is what I want to avoid?

I think we all know the war was coming eventually. France siding with Austria here is the logical choice, especially if Austria has no German ambitions of its own.

>Defeat Prussia.
>Put a buffer state in the Rhineland.
>Put a buffer state in Belgium.

Logically, France would want to surround itself with states that can't do anything to it. A unified German state would be the last thing France wants, and as long as Austria is interested in maintaining the status quo, i.e. no Germany, it's a logical alliance.

Austria has no choice but Germany. Enlargement in any other way weakens the already weak German ruling class.

It's inevitable that we'd end up fighting, so I could take Silesia back and maybe force Bavaria to join my empire.

Status quo is good otherwise.

I meant "German ambitions" as in not wanting to found Germany itself, but if you want to be semantic, okay.

The China-Japan alliance is purely a machination of OOC negotiations; the two nation's governments and citizens hold each other in contempt, and any amount of warmness between them (much less a full fledged alliance) is unrealistic. Should they be as hostile towards each other as they would be if this were during or after the SIno-Japanese wars? Obviously not, but they definitely shouldn't be warm neighbours.

I wouldn't make the assertion that relations are cold at this point in time. The main point of contention that led to the conflict was the land disputes, which even then didn't cause major diplomatic issues until China sent an army into Korea to crush a rebellion. Japan saw this as a landgrab, and thus the Sino-Japanese War started. Hell, the Tokugawa and Qing didn't have much diplomatic interaction at this point yet. The only interaction they really had was mainly indirect through trade. The only reason that Qing-Meiji relations started to deteriorated was due to numerous interventions in Korea, Formosa, and etc. from both sides from the 1870's and on. Even then, the two signed a friendship treaty in 1871.

The 1871 treaty was the beginning of any kind of formal relations between the two countries, and it was far from anything resembling an alliance.

And yet, you claim "the two nation's governments and citizens hold each other in contempt, and any amount of warmness between them". That's the thing that I'm trying to correct.

I'd like to say goodbye to everyone here, it's been a real joy playing with you all and I'll sorely miss this RP, but rl calls.

Before I go, I'd like to make three requests, and they're as neutral as a player who is leaving and has no further interests to push forward can be:

Enjoy the game.
Stop nitpicking.
Don't overthink every single little thing (a tad different from nitpicking.)
Try not to mix the IC with the OOC (the war being fought is largely, though not completely, a manifestation of OOC hostilities.)
Don't argue...or try not to.
Enjoy the game.

It's been a good run, and believe it or not, I've enjoyed playing with you all (yes, even with Nex, as much as I hate to admit, something about the way he over-reacts to things gives me a real kick :P)

So, enjoy the game, don't stick with the OTL, and don't get annoyed at others when they don't. Adios!

Unfortunate to see someone depart, Kho. Hopefully the people that were just behind me in the line to join the RP haven't all ran off.

The signing of the treaty did not signify a warming of relations, but an exit from total isolationism. It was a symptom of the Meiji Restoration, not an indicator of Sino-Japanese brotherly love. All nations that are not hermit states have formalized contact with their neighbours, whether their neighbours are their allies, or, in this case, their traditional enemies.
