[IC] This Means War

Sitting down beside him, I placed my tray on the table and shrugged. "Maybe it's to tell us apart from the people who were already here." I said, looking around at the soldiers with navy blue uniforms. "That is weird." I raised a brow. "What do you think?" I asked curiously. Before he could answer, I closed my eyes and quietly said my grace before picking up and spoon and tasting my food. It wasn't good. Not at all.

I shrugged keeping my eyes on them. "If it is that, then it's confusing. I mean, we're on the same side aren't we? Why would we even need to be separated from them in the first place?" Turning back to Daisy, I frowned in confusion before picking up my spoon and digging in hungrily. I immediately regretted that action and spluttered slightly before forcing myself to swallow the mush in my mouth. "Wow, uh, yum..."

"This is terrible." I forced myself to scoop another spoonful of oatmeal in my mouth. I made a face, wrinkling my nose and shaking my head in disgust. "I can't eat this. This is horrible." I pushed my bowl in front of me. "I can't." I shook my head. I'd find some food around here. I didn't know where, but I would. "I'm not going to eat slops like a pig."

I looked over my shoulder in case that loud man in charge might be near to pick on someone and heard Daisy, but he wasn't. All I could see was the large number of people, forcing themselves to eat the oatmeal. "It is awful." I commented, looking back down at my bowl. "But if you don't eat this, what will you have? They hardly have anything as it is, we're on rations. It may be revolting but you've got to keep your strength up, I have a feeling we won't want to be staying here any longer than we have too." I said. "Besides, it can't be oatmeal for every meal."

I frowned, knowing he was right. I knew if I didn't eat, I could get sick or something. I didn't need that. Not here anyways. "Alright." I sighed and picked up my spoon. "I'll eat it." I scooped another mouthful of food into my mouth, shuttering at the taste. "I really don't want to do this." I took another spoonful. I would wash the taste down with the milk they'd given us, but I was lactose intolerant. "Maybe we could sneak out of here or something." I said quietly. I knew that wasn't possible, but it was definitely a thought.

Watching her begin to eat again, I readied myself to carry on with my own bowl. With a sigh, I spooned some into my mouth. "You know, there's probably a high percentage we'd get caught, but at this stage, I'd rather try than not." I said taking a sip of milk before eating some more. I didn't want to eat mine either, but after what I'd just said to Daisy, there was no way she'd let me leave my bowl full.

"Wait-" I paused, holding my spoon in the air. "Would you really consider ditching this place?" I asked, curiously. If he would leave with me, I'd have no problem getting the heck out of this terrible place. "Because if you would consider it, we could sneak out of here by tonight. We just need a good story to come up with when we show up at a new base." I smirked. I could pull up a lie with no problem. "Naaah, that's too risky." I shook my head at the idea and took another spoonful.

"This place is terrible. Of course I want to get out of here." I said eagerly leaning towards her. "I just don't know if it's a good idea. I mean, it's not like we're not safe here. Maybe if it was an order, if our whole base were to be leaving. We don't know how far the next base is, but we do have food, clothes and a place to sleep, even if they are absolutely awful. It's better than nothing right? And if we leave... we could have nothing for a lot longer than we plan." I said talking myself out of it. It wasn't a good idea, I knew that. This place was awful but it had what we needed, oatmeal and all.

"You're right. That's a terrible idea." I huffed, pushing my bowl in front of me. There wasn't much left to eat, so it wasn't like I was wasting a lot of food or anything. "I have to get out of here though. Somehow." I frowned. "Oh never mind. We'll be ok. We just have to tough all of this nonsense out and hope for the best." I leaned back in my chair and crossed my arms over my chest. A loud bell began to ring and a voice came through the speakers, telling us we only had a few more minutes to eat and when we were done, we were to report to our cabins.

I rolled my eyes at the voice and dropped my spoon back into my bowl. "I don't need any longer with this bowl of mush." I said, my face full of disgust as I picked up the glass of milk. Drinking it all, I placed it beside the bowl and pushed my chair out. "I guess we'd better get going before the Angry Man comes back to yell at us." I nodded towards the door as I slid my hands into my pockets.

"I agree. Lead the way, man." I scooted back in my chair, standing up and shoving a hand in my pocket. "Hey, you should go get your arm looked at. You don't want it to get infected of anything." I nodded at his arm, remembering that Sam was grazed by a bullet yesterday. Why didn't he get it checked out sooner?

"Oh, no don't worry about it." I said, glancing down at it as we walked away from our table. "Some girl I met yesterday bandaged it up for me. It basically just needs a clean and it'll be fine. Hardly hurts." I said sending her a smile.

"Are you sure?" I asked, raising a brow and giving him a smile. "Doesn't need any stitches or anything?" I opened the door, walking out and holding it for Sam. Once we were both out, we began walking back to our cabin.

"If it does, I'll let you know." I said walking alongside her as we made our way back to the cabin, ready for our next orders. Hopefully they weren't coming from the previous soldier who enjoyed yelling in everyone's face. As we neared the cabins, I spotted Laura, the girl from yesterday walking with a group of people. She noticed me and raised her hand, producing a peace sign as a sign she saw me. I almost laughed and smiled back at her, wondering what made her do that.

I noticed the girl from across the way make a peace sign to Sam. I raised an eyebrow with a smirk on my face. "She was on our bus yesterday." I said, mostly to myself than to Sam. I guessed she knew him. A few minutes later, we were walking through the cabin doors. Only a few people were back so far, but other than that it was pretty empty. I sat on my bed and kicked off my boots, grabbing them and sitting them nicely along the side of the bed.

Reaching my bed, I picked up the pile of clothes I had to leave on it earlier and pulled out the picture, stuffing it quickly into my pocket. Folding the dirty clothes up, I left them on the end of my bed, hoping maybe that they came around and did washing or something. "Right, now what. We just wait for more instructions?" I asked Daisy as I sat down on my bed.

"That's what I'm guessing." I ran a hand through my messy hair. I didn't even try to fix it up nice this morning. I've been walking around with bed hair and didn't even know it. "I'm sure they'll be in here soon. Probably to yell at us more or make us train." I sighed, rolling over on my side and playing with a loose string on the blanket.

I sighed, annoyed that we lost our base and wound up here. "Why? You know, why did they attack? Of all bases, ours. Why?" I asked running my hands through my short hair, there was nothing special at our base, no one special. Was it just a blitz attack? Like the one Daisy performed a few months ago, but on a larger scale. Maybe it was just some random soldier who wanted to start something, make a mess somewhere.

"I have no clue. I wish they wouldn't have attacked at all. I'm glad we made it out. So many people got seriously injured and some were even killed! I mean, you saw I tripped over a body! You said you did too." I shook my head. "We've got to do something about this. Stop this war altogether. I didn't ask to be in this war, but since I am here, I'm definitely going to make a difference. Or die trying."

I looked at Daisy, thinking over the words she just said. "I agree. If we do some digging I'm sure we could figure a lot of things out. For one, do you even know why the war started, because I don't. What are we even supposed to be fighting for?" I asked dropping my eyes to my knees. I felt useless here, I wanted to good, just like Daisy said. Make a difference.
