Remember, we are in 1940. The Nazis have invaded Poland and have taken over France.

Pierre took over the watch. He thought about his home and wondered if the first Jews had already been taken. A picture of his twin sister popped into his head. He missed her a lot. He wondered what she thought of him. He had left home suddenly and without warning. She must hate him.

Annabelle got up and went about her chores. As was normal, she thought of Pierre. Why had he left so quickly and why hadn't he written?

Ellia woke up and went to the hospital tent. There had not been a battle for a few days so the tent was strangely empty. She took care of the soldiers that were there, tending to their wounds and giving them water.

Alli was fairly new to the hospital tent. She quickly got up, tied her hair, and dressed herself in the hospital uniform. She walked over to the hospital tent and saw someone already assisting the soldiers. Alli was still in the process of getting to know the hospital crew.
"Hello" she greeted with a smile walking towards the girl.

France, such a beautiful country with such a beautiful language and an interesting history. Even after a quick loss and a swift and rather brutal takeover the land had lost none of it's beauty. Or that's how the man saw it. The man in question seemed at the moment like any other - he wore gray pants, black shoes and a white collared shirt. The scar on his temple and nasty burns on his cheek made him seem like a victim of some horrid actions, but that was not the case. Every day he'd sit in a quiet coffee shop, drinking his black coffee and being polite to the waitresses as well as the customers - to a certain degree at least. Even today he was there. He paid no heed to the soldiers on the streets as long as they paid no heed to him.

Still there was something about the man, something unnerving. Despite his politeness people were vary around him - even those who did not know him on a personal level. Perhaps the fact that he was a Standartenführer of the SS had something to do with that. Even without his black uniform and a pistol hanging from his belt Maximilien Schmidt was just somehow threatening. Occasionally soldiers would approach him, probably to make their reports or other such - sometimes uniformed officers would sit with him and share some gossip or discuss about plans - and he'd answer their questions and other such with a polite and downright warm tone, like there was not a worry in the world. After spending the better part of two hours Maximilien finally got up from his chair, paid for his drinks and left the coffee shop after bidding good day to the owner and playfully flirting with the waitresses.

Casually the man glanced at his pocket watch - it was just about time to get back to work. His unit kept their headquarters in a rather run down hotel that had seen it's better days. It was situated only a short walk away from the coffee shop and had a good view to the nearby streets. It did not take Maximilien long to reach his destination and get changed. When he stepped out from the building again he seemed like a different man all together. He wore his black uniform with pride - as did the dozen armed men who followed out with him. Standartenführer Schmidt smiled ever so faintly as he placed his hat on his head and adjusted the skull pin that adorned it.

Ellia smiled at the new nurse. "Hi, I'm Ellia. You must be new. Perhaps you would like a tour of the facility, or shall I say, tent?" She was a bit condescending, but it was very subtle.

Pierre sighed. He wanted action, but at the same time didn't. Action meant men dying, chaos, and pain.

Annabelle went to the university to meet with some of her friends who were also part of the resistance. She greeted them warmly upon arrival and they were soon talking about life during the war. Resistance talk was reserved for the secret meetings that were held in someone's basement.

Ellis sat on the wooden floor of his house, with the blacked out curtains drawn. Should I just stay here? What does it look like outside. Ellis stood up and went to his door. He twisted the door handle down and pushed the door open.

"I'm Allie, and I would actually appreciate that" she replied with a gentle smile. Looking around, there weren't as many injured soldiers as she had thought there would be. "Is it always this empty?" She asked, never having any experience in the hospital grounds.

Ellia smiled. "Well, no, we just haven't had a battle in a week. Usually it is very full and chaotic. Have you done any nursing before?"

Ellia turned to the entrance as explosions sounded in the distance. "Well, I guess we will just have to see how well you do. I would expect the first wounded soldiers to come in a few minutes."

Pierre looked toward the explosions and wondered if his battalion would be mobilized.

Annabelle had left her friends a while ago and had gone back to her Aunt's house, where she was living.

Ellis stood outside and slammed the door behind him. He looked left and right. Just keep away from people...

((Back to IC))

Annabelle headed to her resistance meeting. She took lots of alleyways and out-of-the-way roads so as to avoid suspicion. She arrived and knocked at the door. Upon speaking the password she was ushered in.

The intelligence network the Germans had managed to put up was surprisingly effective and large. Perhaps it was because some people simply disliked their neighbors more than the occupying forces, or then it was because giving information to the Germans might save at least your own skin. Standartenführer Schmidt and his men had by now struck to one of their targets - it had been a small cellar with two entrances and four little windows. Their plan had been simple and horrifyingly effective. The men had readied themselves on the doors while Schmidt had thrown a smoke grenade through one of the windows to cause panic. The doors were soon kicked in and smg fire had silenced the room.

When the smoke cleared Schmidt and his men checked the cellar for survivors - that was a job the Standartenführer chose to do himself, but his men were close by and ready in case any of the possible survivors would be armed. He spoke very kindly and calmly to a young Frenchwoman who was shaking from head to toe. He assured her that she would not be harmed - for the moment at least he spoke truthfully, the dead cannot give information. He helped the woman up and - while still speaking french - gave a few orders to his men, who politely escorted the woman to a car that had been waiting outside.

Some time later the black clad, well armed group was heading towards their next destination - another hideout of the resistance. Schmidt shook his head slightly and wondered if this time would be as easy as the last one had been?
