Kyo took a paper and thought for a moment before he began writing. He thought that it would be best to go from the lowest level he could remember to the highest. Although, exactly what level some problems would fall in kind of blurred in his mind for a while, so he would just do as many examples of different kinds of problems as he could after a while and stop when he couldn't think of anything different. So, that meant that he should start with addition and subtraction, right? Single digit, double digit, triple digit, quadruple, digits... Did he need to show his work? He raised his hand and typed out the question to ask the housekeeper. "Do you want the methods for each, or are we allowed to solve them mentally and write down the answers?"

"You may do them mentally. If the answers are wrong I will have you show me how you came to the answer you got." the housekeeper told him.

"Understood."
The boy returned to his paper, a few strands of dark hair escaping his hair tie and falling in his face. He was a bit too focused on completing the task to really pay much attention to it at the moment, though. The first few problems were easy enough to do without writing out the steps, though he did have to write out the steps for addition and subtraction for most numbers past three digits. Two perpendicular rows with the numbers, a few dots between them, and a few circles later, even those could be dealt with quickly. He gave a small smile before moving on to simple multiplication and division.

Mike walked up to the orphanage and knocked on the door. He was afraid. What if they didn't like him? What if there were bad people here who did bad things to kids?

The housekeeper went to door. There she saw a young boy. She opened the door. "Hello. Can I help you?"

Py just fiddled around with a pencil in his hand. He was a quick study when it came to learning things but Maths didn't interest him per se. He knew the basics of calculation but things like geometry, trigonometry though sounded rather awesome depended too much on visualization and visual input that he was at an handicap.

You can ask him to repeat solutions and situations almost verbatim but he knew that he didn't know of its meaning most of the time. English and the languages on the other had was an entirely different field. Given a braille edition of any book, you can be assured that he'll spend his time reading it from cover to cover before indulging in any other thing. He can be said to be a bibliophile or rather a very curious being. Whatever seem to catch his fancy, he was always ready to unearth as much as he can.

But he just sat there fiddling his pencil before deciding to ask Katherin for her input.

"What are you upto, Kat? I hardly seem to be able to think of something. Have you taken these lessons before?" he asked her curiously.

Katherin chewed on her pencil. It wasn't that she didn't know how to do math. She knew a few things. But being blind she didn't know how to do math on paper. What she knew how to do she did in her head. Which was fine except how did she show the housekeeper what she knew when she couldn't write it down? She would ask when the housekeeper returned. "Ive never been to school or anything like that." Katherin answered. "But I've learned a few things on he streets. I'm just uncertain how to show my knowledge."

"I-I'm an orphan, so..." Mike looked down, wondering if coming here was such a good idea. "I need a place to stay."

Kyo had moved onto the multiple-step equations after a while, writing down very simple algebra problems to solve. So far, these were all simple examples that he had pulled from a book in his room, and none of them took very long to solve. He had abandoned all notions of mental calculations at this point, though, writing down each step on paper. He stopped after a while when he started thinking of problems that actually required a calculator to solve properly. Did the housekeeper have one that he could borrow? He would have to wait to see, it seemed.

After a while, Kyo started to wonder how everyone else was doing with the assignment. He took a look around to see Katherin and Pyktis at what seemed to be a bit of a standstill. Now that he thought of it, how exactly would they go about the assignment? There couldn't be much help in writing equations down on paper if they couldn't be seen, could there? He wasn't really sure, since he wasn't blind himself; maybe writing it down would still have some value.

As curious as he was, he felt a little awkward, as if the answer was probably obvious and he should already know it. The fact remained that he didn't however, and while asking might make him seem air-headed or painfully ignorant, it couldn't be worse than showing callousness by just assuming in either direction, right? And then there was the fact that they appeared to not have even started yet...

After thinking it over a bit more, the wondering boy reached for his tablet and typed out the question that preyed on his mind: "Katherin, Pyktis? Is it easier to work with spoken proofs, by any chance? Or do you use a different method for something like this assignment?"

Py understood that Katherin faced a similar problem. Now that they had time to figure this out, it seemed that the housekeeper hadn't given much thought to their situation per se. But he replied to her in a curious tone "I'm lost in this too. I mean I was lucky to get a few books in braille but i can't figure how to do maths on paper. I mean I can recite the number system but I don't know their shapes."

"Can't say, Kyo." Py shrugged. "I mean, yeah if there is simple addition or other basic calculations involved I think I can do that but I don't know what more does maths include." he said to him. "I mean I know the number system somewhat through experience but I can't put it on paper. I haven't read that much yet. I wonder I am even capable of doing this assignment." he finished.

"Like Pyr I don't know if I can do this assignment. I know how to count. But I have never had need to do more then simple addition or subtraction. And I don't know how to show what I do know to paper. While I can read brail I never learned the number in either system."

Hmm... What to do? Kyo really wasn't sure. The main issue seemed to be getting the information on paper, and he didn't know any Braille. That would probably have to be covered during lessons with the housekeeper, but it seemed rather unfair that the two would have to struggle with what was turning out to be an impossible task.

"What if you listed the steps for what you do know and had someone write them for you for now? We can ask the housekeeper about teaching the writing system when she returns."

"Umm...not to sound dumb. But you see, the main problem with me and I think with Kat is that whatever we have learned is more from experience than practice or process. So when you hand us a ten dollar note and say it is a twenty dollar one we know that we need ten more to meet your actual claim. Throughout our lives we have had so many such experiences that these calculations are more instinct than anything. So I simply can't narrate how I can calculate whatever I could." Py said in an earnest tone.

It was an unusual question. Mike liked to think everyone was special in their own way. "I-I like to think so. Sometimes..."

The housekeeper rolled her eyes. Sometimes it was hard getting an answer to such a dimple question. "Can you do something others can not."

"Uh huh." Mike put his right hand under his shirt, then put his hand under his left armpit and started making farting noises with his arm. "See?"

Kyo took a moment to think about this, but...it didn't make that much sense to him. A ten dollar note wasn't a twenty dollar note...but ten more would create an equality...that was all that was needed to be known, right? And when it came to addition and subtraction...that was kind of an automatic process, wasn't it? Something plus something made another number because that was just how much would be there when the amounts were counted together, right? And wasn't it better to learn from experience than theory? What was he missing?

Although...as long as it was correct, the process wouldn't even matter, right? He shook his head and started typing again; he must have misunderstood what Pyktis was trying to explain and needed more information, clearly. "Pyktis, would you give me another example?
