Gray and Lyon both use Ice Make magic of the Molding Magic subsection but their magic isn't quite the same. Gray creates inanimate objects and Lyon creates animals. Two different styles of the same base magic.

Edit: From J8cob's previous post, the style of magic is a thing to think about between two character. Ex: Lissana, Elfman, and Marijane (I probably spelled their name wrong lol) have the same kind magic, but a different style for each.

That, and their appearance aren't exactly the same. But enough for me to look twice before fully distinguishing which one of the two guys I was looking at, but that's propbably just me. I'm just really amazed by how close the comparisons are if Heartless didn't see the full appearance, personality, and magic of Lazarus, the odds of it happening is really quite funny.

One of the things I had been hoping for in the canon was to see Ul (Gray and Lyon's mentor) actually fight someone. At this point I don't think I'll ever see something like that, but it has been mentioned several times that she was incredibly strong. It's always been vague but a recent showing of her capability implied she was approximately equal with Gildarts.

I think I remember seeing her lose a leg against the monster and replaced it with a ice leg in the anime. Ya... that was another thing that added to the list of cool things she done when she was in the anime.
