A foil VS armor... I have no idea. Isn't it a small, thin, sharp blade and should therefore be quite efficient at piercing through armor?

I would assume so. We're essentially going to be hitting hard enough to kill or incapacitate, except people don't die because of magic.

A foil would probably be too thin to pierce through most metal armor, and would just crumple or, more likely, be deflected instead. Against softer armor like leather or the like, it would probably be pretty darn effective.

I'm implying that a bo staff likely couldn't break through plate armor - it might hurt the person inside, but it can't break the armor itself.

Since most of the gymnastics and athletics-parts of the battles have been removed, I don't really see a point in having the touch-feature. You likely won't be letting go of your weapon in the middle of battle and against anything but mooks, this would be fairly risky and unreliable to attempt. At least this is true if the touched person is wearing armor - I don't mind it happening if they're just wearing clothes though, 'cuz clothes are made out of paper. :P

So, to clarify:
You can touch mooks' heads and backs and get points for it.

You cannot touch commanders' and captains' who still have their armor on. IF they do not have their armor, you can touch them and shred their clothes - and get great service and extra points.

Of course, if you guys WANT to be able to do the touch-thing, by all means, lemme know and I'll just roll with it. I just half-omitted it because these war-games are more war-like than the gymnastics-games of Dog Days.

Eh, the staff could just be made of metal instead of the traditional wood. At the very least, it could be tipped with metal like Cinque's for extra force to smash through armor.

Sure the first option would handle horribly, but lolmagic can make it work.

As for the touch thing, eh, I'm okay with either. Touch does make things a bit easier for Alam, since he won't have to pummel on people. I do think a more competitive tone to things is better though, and touching seems like it would be a bit dull.

One also has to remember that there will always be gaps and thin areas of armor that a staff weapon can exploit. Helmets in particular would still cave in and the user inside could still be killed if struck by a staff weapon if the person had sufficient strength, after all. There is a reason that maces without flanges and even studded wooden clubs were still effective well into the Medieval heyday when even shields were starting to become obsolete because of metallurgical developments.

My point with the Foil is that it's a modern competition weapon that even at its invention was never meant to harm anyone with any particular lethality. An Epee is derived from a Smallsword, itself derived from Rapiers and Sabers, all of which are developed from thrusting techniques laid down by Arming Swords, Nordic Swords, and finally originating with Spathas and the incredibly scientific fighting style of the Romans (their fighting style was actually developed around metabolic efficiency so their troops had the most stamina throughout the battles). Anyway, Foils just kinda... bend... Something that looks like a foil and can be used similarly to a foil would be an Epee or Rapier. Bear in mind that neither of those weapons will bend like a foil as they're rigid metal meant to pierce through chain and plate armor.

Anyway, I vote for keeping the touch feature against mooks and low-stamina, un-helmeted commanding units. It'd be similar to how real-life knights had a knife for a similar "mercy kill" purpose.
