And is it just an instant shift, where one moment you're human, the next you're a bat at your center of mass?

It takes training to be able to turn into a bat, but nothing too extensive, and it is an instant shift. Of course Vampire Bats! What kind of person do you take me for? :P

My next post has my character slowing down and being very thorough about vampires, which means he'll think about being a bat. Would that make a completely unsuspecting vampire turn into a bat?

No, it takes training to turn into a bat. No one can do it unconsciously.
