God damn, what a game. Very easy, unless you're going for 100% synch in which case it's only mostly easy (some of the artificial limitations they give you are poorly executed -- it's not that they're HARD, just that you have to go out of your way to make an opportunity to pull them off). But on the whole it's just plain badass. Might be the best game I've played in years, that wasn't Demon's- or Dark Souls, and obviously, good for very different reasons. Easily the best AC game ever -- which was obvious right from the game's start, when I immediately realized all the things I hated about AC3, and realized what a slump it's been, ever since I guess the original.

Tips:

1. Just go for full synch. It's not THAT much extra time and the investment.... well it doesn't get you anything, but you'll be more invested.
2. Carry a bottle of rum, and drink whenever somebody on screen drinks. You'll probably live.
3. Don't sing along to the shanties, no matter how tempted you are, because officers shouldn't do that, least of all captains.
4. Even though you'll probably lose, fight the 'Legendary Ships' as soon as you get the chance. They're a worthy challenge for your brigate, no matter how many upgrades you buy, but losing early will help you appreciate winning later.
5. There are letters in bottles, which come together to form a mildly-interesting short story. It's mostly worth reading.
6. Hacking is an easy sidequest, which can provide some closure on Desmond's horrifically-terminated storyline and help you relaunch the series in your mind.
7. If your sailors won't stop groaning 'sailboat malarky,' you can command them to shut up with the d-pad (playstation, not sure what for other platforms). You can also command them to sing, if that's your style.
8. Stealth outfit is boss outfit, but the Redcoat uniform looks the best with your golden guns.
9. Kenway's Fleet is a fun minigame. It's a timesink though. If you're trying to optimize your fleet, get two schooners (preferably with 20 cargo space, but they don't matter), and load up frigates and cruisers for the rest. 'Man-o-War' ships with less than 80 cargo space are a wasted dock, and you should scrap them.
10. Just play it, goddamn it, it's a fantastic game.

I didn't even realize you needed a connection for the fleet, until one day all my shit went down. All those ships.... stuck in transit....

If you're going for the full 100%, you do have to access the fleet at some point. There's treasure maps that can only be found by trader ships. But I think an app, or a website, or something along those lines exists to where you can do the fleet stuff without loading the game. Might have more luck that way, idunno.

Oh, one more tip.

No, you don't have to play AC3 to 'get it.' You really don't. There's one big tie-in, and one very very extremely subtle tie-in, and for the rest of the time you can ignore everything, secure in the knowledge that 'AMERICA HAPPENED,' and really, it was all because of an assassin, but really, it was all because Desmond.

If you're curious about the tie-ins, though, here they are in hiders. Shouldn't spoil anything at all.

I think my sig speaks volumes for my opinion of the game.

Totally agreed on the supporting cast. I genuinely felt bad when Adwale was pissed at me, and I love James Kidd. Also may not be a popular opinion, but I found Hornigold sympathetic and compelling.

James Kidd was a great fucking character, I haven't been that attached to a side character in a really long time.

Last time I was that invested in characters was when I was well and truly invested in the Mass Effect series when I played through them each for the first time.

Grew up from an awkward teen to a...still awkward adult playing Mass Effect.

I'm embarrassed about how I acted when Mass Effect 3 came out.

It's also why I don't pre-order anymore
