there's an ongoing status effect for everything these days... Back in my day we only had Mummy Rot.
Which reminds me of a joke:
So an adventurer from Greyhawk goes dungeon delving for exp, loots and plotlines in the Tomb of Horrors for at least 6 campaigns. Upon his return he notices his finger has begun to turn black. At which he panics and goes to the local healer for some potions or something to cure it in Greyhawk.
The healer takes one look and recognizes what's wrong, asking if the adventurer has been farming in the tomb of horrors. To which he replies yes, and the healer replies it's a common occurrence of some necromancy and the finger will need to be amputated to stop the spread.
Horrified, the adventurer leaves and decides to visit the Tomb of Horrors to see if a necromancer can fix him. He finds one outside the Tomb and asks if he can fix it. The usually nice necromancer takes one look, recognizes what it is and laughs, asking if the adventurer has been to a healer yet and if the healer said the finger had to be amputated. He replies yes to both, making the necromancer keel over laughing hard. After a good five minutes or so, the adventurer asks what's so funny, and asks if there's a cure because clearly the healer was wrong, right?
"It doesn't need to be amputated at all my friend. It'll fall off on it's own."
