In Bravura, 'civilization' is more or less everywhere because Bravura is covered is little villages and hamlets. It's about two hours' walk away from the capitol, and it's about one hour's walk away from the riverlands front.

So I was thinking about it, and my character could neatly fit into this battle, or at least towards the end or just after. Since he's a courier, he could be delivering people's mail and be unfortunate (Fortunate?) enough to have arrived during a battle. Though he wouldn't take an active role in fighting immediately, of course.

Lilith's furious swearing alerted Habeen to the presence of the last few axemen running like squirrels. "Oh, well. They could have gone quietly," Habeen said with a shrug. She pointed at the fleeing axemen and the air around them bubbled into that same corrosive foam. They shrieked as their skin blistered from the chemical reaction. "Can't run so well with the mire eating at your legs, can you? Ha-ha!"
