Yeah, so far, I don't find a reason why he would want to go on a journey with them. I can see Eva having him join and everyone having to accept it cause it's the Summoner who decides Guardians and all.

Dunno what exactly he'd be, especially since the group is quite gruff with Alex. And the contestant inedible fighting xD

He does indeed have general knowledge of all things machina after all. Jack of all trades if you will.

I have an idea of how to go from "That thief guy" to something more desirable.

And there he was, stranded in Besaid with no connections other than bad blood between old mentors. He spent most of the day either trying to steal or trade scrap metals for food and gathering some cardboard to sleep on.
