You were a crew on an extremely remote research station on orbit around a super massive gas giant. Gas giant being a gas giant it started fusion reaction. This was obviously very bad because this station was unequipped with shielding and it immediately started to burn away. You all hoped into a remote-area equipped space pod and set off. But with the nearest station 2.8 lightyears away you'd need a slip-space drive to get there before this little Ion-powered skip-jack turned to dust. The station was set up as an xenoarcheological research station. So maybe you can find something by poking through some of the ruins. Beats spacing yourself.
So yeah you would have to manage engine strength, food, and studying alien artifacts all while in a strange solar system with little to no outside help.
