Name: Hanakaze Shino
Age: 38
Gender: Male
Appearance: Shino is a middle-aged man of strange dress sense, frequently described by his clients as "a weird ojisan." While tall and surprisingly muscular, Shino usually slouches and takes on similar languid postures, disguising how large he actually is. His messy hair and short beard are both bleached blond, which combined with his dark eyes and tanned skin makes him look something like a yanki. Shino's usual attire consists of a hawaiian shirt worn open and without an undershirt, dark cargo shorts, traditional japanese sandals, fingerless black gloves, and a matching pendant and earing of an inverted cross. Shino seemingly always has a cigarette on him; either smoking it, chewing on it, playing with it or having it tucked behind his ear.
Personality: As far as onmyouji go, Shino is rather strange. Rather than possessing a distinct goal or desire that he acts upon, he prefers to act as a balancer. Shino is unconcerned with ideals such as good and evil, instead acting toward achieving balance between opposing forces. Just as well, he never picks sides, and switch to helping a party that he was previously hindering without a second thought. Like a cat, he hates to be tied down, and while he is not an unfriendly person, he has difficulty establishing lasting relationships. He strikes most that meet him as a very laid-back sort of person, but has some distinctly eccentric habits and mannerisms. Shino is willing to help others with his power, but always insists that they help themselves with all of their strength. He prefers taking indirect approaches to solving problems, rarely meddling directly. Like a zen master of old, Shino is filled with unorthodox wisdom, and will always express himself without intending to hold his tongue nor deliberately offend.
Abilities: An experienced onmyouji, Shino has spent decades studying magical theory, with particular interest in myths and magical creatures. He is something of an expert in curses and possessions, with great knowledge on remedying either. Like all onmyouji, Shino is skilled in the creation of ofuda, particularly those relating to his personal affinity of
Seals. As he hates to deal in absolutes, Shino would far rather seal something away or temporarily banish it, rather than destroy it. Creatures, power, even thoughts can be sealed away by his expertise. That aside, Shino is shockingly strong for a human, having sealed away his own limitations years ago.
Shino's unique ability as an onmyouji is a peculiar one, as befits such a peculiar man. With the power of the
Blank Canvas, Shino is at once empty, and filled with endless possibility. He can copy any magical ability that he witnesses, be it that of a magician or a creature of some type, even without fully understanding it. Once he has copied an ability, can either replace it with a different ability, or use it exactly once. However, the limitation of the
Blank Canvas is that once a copied ability is used, Shino loses all memory of how to perform the technique, and as well forgets having ever possessed the ability, and the incident in which he used it. For Shino, every ability he copies is practically his first.
Skills: As mentioned previously, Shino possesses encyclopedic knowledge of magical phenomena, with a special interest in myths and creatures. He is well-versed in the ritual removal of curses and possessive entities, and is a master crafter of ofuda. Interestingly enough, Shino is also a fully-ordained Shinto priest, though he has never worked at a shrine.
Equipment: Shino travels lightly, keeping with him only his materials for crafting ofuda, a few spare generic seals, a good luck charm or two, a bottle of sake, some expired coupons for a chain doughnut cafe, and his priestly robes. He carries all of his money with him in cash, but woe to the would-be robber that should try to take it off of him.
Brief Backstory: As his college friends describe him, Shino is a man without a past, and without a family. His memories begin at his freshman year of college, for reasons he himself does not fully understand. Shino suspects that he sealed away his own memories, but he genuinely does not think about the matter enough to look into it further. All the better, he figures, to not have that sort of emotional baggage weighing him down. He attended a respectable university in Kanto, majoring in Shinto studies. There, he became a member of a paranormal investigation society; essentially a school club focused on the supernatural. The club activities, though, were far more real that any of those outside of it realized. It was as a member of this club that Shino attained the base of his knowledge of onmyoudou, and made friends and connections that would last him the rest of his life.
After graduating and being anointed as a priest, Shino set out to travel Japan. He studied vigorously, learning all that he could of the supernatural, and of the nature of magic. He saw where the supernatural and mundane worlds met, usually with tragic consequences for those that lived in the latter. As he traveled, he set up a sort of business as a "specialist" in magical matters, loaning out his skills for those in need of them. That said, he was quite discriminating with clients, and demanded their utmost dedication and efforts. His hefty fees were another matter, but Shino had living expenses that needed to be covered.
Shino has lived like this, as a wandering, freelance occultist for quite some time. He travels where life takes him, relying on the skein of fate to choose his path. He balances that which has run askew where he can, and helps those that both need and deserve his help where he finds them. In recent years, he trailed a notorious vampire, and upon seeing the perfect opportunity to correct the imbalance she represented, he sealed away much of her power, and bound her to him as a shikigami. While he realizes that "Cherry Hunter" (as he renamed her) detests him for this, he does not see it as something permanent, and seeks to unbind her when it would be the most balanced action to take.
