It hadn't been long before the Templars were reunited once more. Together they stood in silence, it's eerie echo as wind howled lowly throughout the tunnels. The silence was interrupted only by the footsteps of the warriors as they eyed the various tunnel openings around them. At the same time, Evelyn looked over the map she'd found in the prior chamber. It took some time to decipher the tangled passageways and where each led but eventually a course was mapped to the location of the Kest King and Queen. "This hell is nearing it's end", Evelyn thought to herself as she pointed towards the first tunnel they'd enter. They'd barely covered considerable ground when they'd encountered something interesting. There were signs that this tunnel had been used recently and in large numbers. "This must be why we haven't met any resistance since the entrance, they've gone to protect the Queen", Evelyn scowled as she contemplated the coming battle, this would be a battle far more dangerous than before. The mass of the hive would be at the end of this road, not to mention the king, and they most definitely won't go down without a fight.
Finally, the group had reached the tunnel's end at a large door which seemed to be from the original dwarven structure. It was tall and old, ancient symbols and dwarven writing carved into its form. Evelyn did not know the dwarven tongue but she recognised the markings from similar dwarven ruins. This was the foundry, where the weapons would be forged from smelted dwarven steel. "The perfect place to hold the Queen: large and warm, perfect to use as an incubation chamber...it will be their undoing", Evelyn stood before the group, blocking the others from charging blindly into the lion's den. "This is it, the King and Queen will be here..along with most of their warriors. If my assumptions are correct, the cultists who've performed these disgusting experiments will also be inside, controlling the hive warriors and their hybrid experiments. I won't lie, this will be a hard fight, they've been cornered and will hold nothing back...but what they don't know is how poorly they chose their final stand. The foundry within is likely to be active to warm the eggs, if most of us can hold back the horde long enough for others to tip the large smelting vats, we could drown the hive in molten steel. Argus, Glodin, Kaathe, and Ruinil will be responsible for tipping the vats. The rest of us has to hold the hive back at the entrance, we cannot allow them to escape, especially the cultists if any are within. Vat Group will be provided cover from Guard Group when possible but it's crucial we keep an eye on each other's positions. Guard Group cannot break the formation and Vat Group cannot dump the vats until the I give the signal with my lightening. If all goes well we will leave this place...mostly unscathed".
With her shield pressed against the doors, the knight-captain pushed hard to the sound of the ancient doors creaking open. Instead of seeing a mass of Kest, the group was greet by darkness and silence. The glow of the vats from the upper floor barely illuminated enough to see within. Evelyn fired a bolt of lightning into the room and in that short moment that spark of light illuminated the sheer numbers of Kest gathered around the massive king and Queen. Suddenly the room was bathed in light as the torches were ignited from an unknown source, a pyromancer among the enemy most likely. The room was massive, shaped like an arena with the Queen in a pit at the opposite end of the foundry. The upper level, holding the vats of molten steel surrounding the stadium, was connected to the main floor by way of ancient stairways. No railing to protect from falls and the steps themselves giving away to erosion. What's more interesting is that the hive didn't immediately attack once their presence was discovered. Instead they made way for what could only be their ambassador.
A hideous combination of man and beast, a cultist had bonded with the Kest Queen, an umbilical cord like tendril was attached to his neck which carried him over the ground like a puppet on a string. For a moment it looked as if the body would just be suspended over the groun as a sort of insult but it spoke. A coarse, sick voice which resembled one under possession began to groan before uttering intelligible words, "Faaaar you've come...no furrrtherrr you sshhhhall go...fffor the hiiiive...you sshhhhhall serve". It was then that Evelyn began to notice more cultists appear from amongst the horde of Kest. They all had white eyes and strands of Kest flesh melded to their bodies. What's worse was that some of the prisoners were there as well but away from the frontlines. The prisoners were attached to mounds on flesh on the wall, their bellies filled with the eggs of the next generation of Kest warriors or perhaps the hybrids. "So it means to make us into breeders for its children", Evelyn had to hold herself back from heaving at the thought of that.
The time for conversation was long over, Evelyn looked back at the others and nodded. The signal had been given, the battle had begun.
