“War!, as the world teeters on the brink of anarchy, a new hope arises, an elite international task force that has been charged with ending the war. Their goal is to restore liberty and peace to all nations from this war that has taken so much of our humanity. OVERWATCH, Soldiers, Scientists, Adventurers, Oddities, and Guardians work together as one to secure Global Peace for generations. Under their steadfast protection, the world slowly recovers, a dawn of peace and liberty await the inevitable victory that our brave men and women fight for.” The Inspirational words echoed through the vicinity of the barracks of the Overwatch Headquarters, its source coming from a enormous but flat television screen that had been attached to a grey metallic wall behind it. Propaganda including the mention of Overwatch was quite frequent these days, and it brought most of the public a feel of jubilation and hope. The officer in charge of creating these pretentious announcements had in fact never met any of the Overwatch team though he still managed to revere them. Rumors and reports fueled his almost obsessive like behavior and kept him motivated to lift the public’s view of these new elite soldiers that remained victorious upon all challenges they faced.
Inside of the extravagant barracks, a lone female member of Overwatch appreciated the positive support she and the rest of her Overwatch received from civilians but the endless praise was beginning to wear upon her nerves. This certain member of Overwatch was one of three team leaders, next to Seventy Six and Reinheart. Her name was Andromedai, named after the closest galaxy to the Milky Way galaxy, one that will someday collide with our own. This imperutbable member of Overwatch sat alone at a large metal engineering table, her experimental pulse rifle being held in place by a number of latches. Parts of the rifle she knew by the name [F273] were neatly placed upon the engineering table, being thoroughly cleaned, inspected by hand and by machine to insure they were in top condition before being installed into the frame of the weapon. Each piece played an important part and had to function correctly without any issues or the weapon could misfire, combust, or even explode. The fully constructed [F273] now sat in the latches that were holding it in place with its inspection complete, Andromedai stared at it with rapt, eager attention to every detail of the weapon that had been made especially for her.
Carefully and gently, Andromedai undid the latches upon her weapon, attached a shoulder strap to it then gently slid her right arm through the strap, letting it rest next to the left side of her body. Pushing her chair back slowly upon its metal wheels that silently rolled across the smooth metal floor, she stood up to her full six foot height. The female looked like most other soldiers in the normal military but her armor was much more advanced in normal ballistic protection, nuclear, biological, chemical protection and environmental protection. It had a black and grey digital camouflage applied to its material that seemed slightly bulky for someone of Andromedais combat position. The [F273] could change from a high-powered sniper rifle into a fully automatic assault rifle by making a small adjustment on the outside of the weapon. From the outside of the engineering bay in the barracks, there came a loud rapping upon its door, breaking Andromedai from her peaceful trance she had found herself in, her mind wandering about. “It’s you and I for this mission Andromedai, gear up and finish whatever task you are doing then report to hanger [C-5] for departure.
The longer we wait to leave, the higher the chance problems will occur for us.” Quickly moving to the door and opening it, she found Solider 76 standing outside of it, the same emotionless look spread across his rugged face. “I am ready to depart immediately 76, lead the way.” Andromedai said in a neutral tone. 76 nodded his head and turned, walking down the large metallic hallway that was decorated with random military propaganda for Overwatch. The two of them passed through the technologically advanced headquarters for Overwatch, passing by other members who were going about their daily tasks and preparing to depart at a moment’s notice if they were called upon. The hanger they arrived in was set up more as a shuttle bay than an actual hanger bay for fighters or other military aircraft. The shuttle itself though shared the sleek design of the main fighter jet used by the military. “I guess we are taking a shuttle this time 76? I prefer flying to ground transportation most of the time.” 76 did not reply, he merely pressed a button on the side of the shuttle and its doors opened silently, showing off its luxurious interior.
Climbing inside, Andromedai took the copilots seat next to 76 and strapped herself into her seat, examining the cockpit. It had been a while since she had flown in any aircraft, due to mostly moving on foot or via ground vehicle thanks to the missions she was assigned. Once the shuttle took off with 76 controlling it, Andromedai double checked her gear and readied herself for combat, that being wherever 76 was taking them. That thought sparked the question, “Where are we headed?” 76 did not turn to look at Andromedai but responded by saying, “Small rebal facility near the outskirts of the imperial mountains, there is a high value target that needs to be taken in alive, you focus on the guards from a distance and I will take care of everything else from inside of the facility.” Andromedai said “Acknowledged 76, I will take an offensive position on the Kholat mountains, drop me off there and I will let you know when I have eyes on.” There was a short pause before 76 nodded his head once more. The shuttle dipped sharply and almost nosedived into the ground before leveling off, letting Andromedai jump out the side and gracefully glide down with her small jetpack stopping her from falling to her death.
The shuttle vanished before Andromedai hit the grassy incline below her feet. A lust forest was now around her, she had forgotten the name of it but that was not anything to worry about for the time being. Carefully but quickly, she moved up the mountain and found a couple old world towers that were overgrown with lush vegetation. Taking her position and setting up her rifle, she had a clear shot of the facility and could see 76 nearby, waiting for her to give the all clear. Two rebels were facing each other outside of a massive metal gate that looked as if it could stop a train dead in its track if it hit it. One shot from her silenced rifle was all it took, the round flew from the barrel and traveled through both of the guards, killing them where they stood. 76 was up now, quickly he moved to the guards and pulled them back, removing one of their uniforms and putting it on over his. The bodies were buried, it would have appeared as if they had ditched the facility, which was becoming quite common these days with Overwatch putting more pressure onto them.
Flipping on a small screen over her left eye, she watched through 76’s armor mounted camera as he walked into the base, the soldiers not even giving him the light of day as they worked upon a large assortment of military equipment. “Nice job blending in, the target you are currently looking for should be two hundred meters north east of you inside of the massive mansion. I do not know his exact location but I am sure it would be somewhere secure on the top floor or in the back of the facility.” There was no reply, 76 head her but wasn’t about to take a chance of responding and blowing any of his cover. There were a couple elite rebel soldiers inside of the facility but they also ignored him for the most part, glancing over to him for a moment then going back to talking. The mansion doors were thankfully unlocked and 76 was able to enter without any trouble, though some other rebels gave him a strange look as if he was greatly out of place. The inside of the mansion was grandly decorated with luxurious furnishings and decorations that made the outside look like a third world country.
“Ok, try the stairway in front of you to the right, stay along the wooden pathway until you come to the fifth door, your target will be in his study most likely, check there and be ready for any hostiles or strange activity. I am seeing a lot of movement down here for some reason even though they still have no idea what is going on, stay on alert.” Said Andromedai just as 76 walked into the commander’s room where he was lounging upon a chair reading a large leather and gold bound book. “Guard, thank you for coming on such short notice, I have something to…” the man never finished his sentence, 76 shot him between the eyes with a silenced rifle. The man crumpled in his seat in a grotesque and non-living way. “I thought we wanted him alive?” asked Andromedai as 76’s reached into the dead commanders jacked and pulled out a journal as well as a couple other items that Andromedai had trouble viewing do to the angle they were removed.
“Only need his journal.” 76 pushed the dead commander into the fireplace next to him then placed a small black box into the room and prepping it with what seemed to be a small charge. “I can leave with my life if he is dead, though they will discover the body shortly, I will meet you at the end of the canyon five miles from our current position.” Andromedai did not respond but merely folded up her weapons bipod and quickly moved through the forest, knowing it was only a matter of time until they found the body, then the area and sky would be full of hostiles looking for them. “What was the black box for?” she asked 76 as she ran through the forest. 76 responded by saying “I left them a parting gift, when anyone opens that door to his room and approaches his body, the explosive I left will detonate destroying the whole facility.” A soft chirp came from her earpiece from an unknown source, it was concerning but now was not the time for that, running as far away as she could to the extraction point was. The forest was lush and warm, filled with beautiful trees that climbed to the sky and other vegetation all over the ground.
If she was not running for her life, Andromedai would have enjoyed the sight and would have found peace as well as tranquility there. Without warning, an incredibly loud explosion shook the earth beneath her feet and scared all the animals around her into a frenzy around them who fled in terror. Only a moment passed before the shockwave hit her, almost throwing her into a tree but thankfully she managed to keep upright and keep running, dizzy from the change of pressure around her and the wave of pure energy she had managed to stay on foot from. In the distance, 76 was already waiting for her, when he saw her appear at the tree line, he pointed back in the direction they had come from. A large fireball of blue and purple arose from that direction, with a black cloud of smoke that lingered long after the fireball had vanished. “Let’s get back to the Headquarters.” said Andromedai as she climbed back into the shuttle, taking the copilots seat once more and strapping herself in. The shuttle quickly took off seemingly on its own once 76’s entered.
Below, there was a large smoldering crater where the facility use to be, part of the forest was glowing embers around it and at the last moment before the ship vanished into its high speed of travel, Andromedai thought she someone or something still there, possibly debris but that was unlikely. The ship arrived back at the Overwatch Headquarters and landed gently inside of the hanger where the doors closed and securely locked. “Command will want to know what happened Andromedai, I will take care of that, go and try and rest, you will need it after what happened.” Andromedai nodded her head and started to walk back to her room in the barracks, “How does he know the shock wave hit me, what did I see back there when we were on our way back.” She thought to herself. Once at her room, Andromedai pressed her number combination upon her door and stepped in, shutting it behind her and letting it lock before walking over to her bed and laying down on it, looking up at the ceiling above her. Her mind wandered before she fell into a peaceful and rejuvenating sleep. When she awoke, there was someone knocking on her door once more, pulling herself out of her bed, she walked over to the security door on her room and opened it, finding 76 standing before her.
“I spoke with command and they wanted to congratulate us in person but are unable to at this time, instead we are being asked to grab our dinner and head into the main briefing room for an emergency meeting. I am unsure if it has to do with the facility we destroyed but I have a feeling we shook the rebels hornets’ nest.” Andromedai smiled, “I personally think it’s about time we moved against them even more, we managed to deliver a massive blow to their operations. Should send a message that tells them to surrender or die, sadly those are the only two choices people have these days, I mean those who are fighting against us at least.” 76 nodded his head and he vanished seemingly into thin air around a corner and away from Andromeadi who went in the other direction to grab her own dinner. It was a boring dinner, just a sandwich with some fresh fruit alongside it, they only managed to have special food when it was a holiday or celebration of the sorts.
Quickly wrapping her food up on a metal plate, she made her way to the briefing room and took a seat in the large room that was more of an auditorium than anything else. Around her was every member of Overwatch that was currently not on a mission or away on an assignment. Re-positioning herself in her seat to be as comfortable as she could be, she started to eat her food, waiting for the briefing to begin.
