In the older days men learned how to travel between worlds by the use of gates that spanned vast gulfs of distance and time, but eventually, as ever, man over-reached himself by being clever enough to crate marvels, but not wise enough to use them well. The gates have become unstable, drawing in all the magic and scientific power of the worlds they link. The natural balance has been undone, and if the portals remain open all the worlds shall eventually be destroyed. The worlds can only be saved if each portal is closed.
I have an idea for a RP which involves a load of characters from different genres being brought together by the approved method of travelling through portals. But instead of trying to explore and survive on this new world, they have a mission: to close the portals that will otherwise destroy all their homeworlds. They only way they can do that is by passing through the portal to the next world, closing it permanently behind them. This means a journey across the world and dealing with whatever problems are thrown at them along the way. Invasions, wars of succession, natural disasters? Bring it on! Whatever it takes to get to the next portal.
Another idea is that we all create a world with a portal (fantasy, sci-fi, steampunk, post-apocalypse, whatever) and when the characters pass through the portal into the next world, we decide whose world it is, and that player takes over as the ‘GM’ at that point, laying down the ground rules (what magic/technology works), the world background and the current situation they’ve fallen into.
