Shiranui had Kinoko as a trump card, but he figured like a lot of gym leaders, Roxanne would have counter-strategies for opponents with a type advantage.

"Who wants to go first?" Liam asked.

"You can go, I wanna get an idea or Roxanne's Battling style so I can feel for it" Lance said. He knew treecko and Zhonya will be able to take some hits but he needed to find a strategy that would work for taillow.

"I agree with Lance," added Shiranui.

Liam took the position in the challenger's box. The official stated that each trainer was permitted two Pokémon, and only the challenger could make a substitution.
"Geodude, go!" Roxanne called.
"Mudkip!" Liam called.
"Geodude, Tackle!"
"Water Gun!" Liam called. the jet of water gushed toward the rock type, and it took signifiant damage.
"Rock Blast!" Roxanne called. Three rocks rushed forward and hit Mudkip.
"Water Gun again!" Liam called. This Water Gun was a critical hit and KO'd Geodude. Roxanne sent out Nosepass to replace it. Liam recalled Mudkip for Treecko.
"Absorb!" Liam called. Treecko zapped some health from the Compass Pokémon.
"Nosepass, Discharge!"
"Slam the ground!" Liam called. Treecko went flying and the ball of electricity soared below him.
"Bullet Seed!" Liam called. A shower of seeds rained down on Nosepass, KO'ing it. Liam caught Treecko in his arms as he fell to the ground. Roxanne presented Liam with the Stone Badge. Liam placed it in his badge case, beginning the row beneath Kalos' badges. Roxanne had her Pokémon healed and was ready for the next challenger.

Shiranui took his place at the battlefield as the official went over the rules for the gym battle.
"Geodude, go!"
"Kinoko, I choose you!" Shiranui sent his Shroomish out. Conspicuous in its presence was a putrid purple orb that Kinoko was holding on to.
"Geodude, Rock Tomb!"
"Kinoko, Stun Spore!" The Shroomish sprayed an orange powder at Geodude that left it paralysed. Geodude was unable to move due to its newly-inflicted paralysis. The orb glowed a purple colour and Kinoko was badly poisoned, revealing the Shroomish's held item as a Toxic Orb. Due to the Poison Heal ability, Kinoko did not lose any health.
"Geodude, try again!"
"Kinoko, Mega Drain!" Kinoko drained away Geodude's energy and the damage was enough to knock it out.

"Geodude, return; Nosepass, go!"
"Nosepass, the Compass Pokémon. Nosepass had been said to be completely unmoving, with its magnetic nose pointed due north. However, close observation has revealed that the Pokémon actually moves by a little over 3/8 of an inch every year."
"Kinoko, return; Electrike, I choose you!" Shiranui switched Kinoko out and sent out his Zorua disguised as an Electrike.
"Nosepass, Harden!"
"Electrike, Dark Pulse!" Roxanne was dumbfounded to see an Electrike successfully use a move it couldn't learn. Nosepass was blasted by the attack before it got harder.
"Nosepass, Rock Tomb!"
"Electrike, Fake Tears!" Once again, the Electrike used a move it couldn't learn successfully as he turned on the water works and guilt tripped Nosepass, harshly lowering its Special Defence stat. Nosepass hurled a salvo of boulders at Electrike and buried it underneath. What crawled out of the rubble wasn't an Electrike but a Zorua in its true form.
"That explains everything," said Roxanne before making her next call, "Nosepass, Rock Tomb once more!"
"Zoro, Grass Knot!" The Zorua conjured a grass rope and looped it around Nosepass' legs before pulling it, sending Nosepass crashing down and knocking it out.

Shiranui won a Stone Badge of his own and Roxanne had her Pokémon healed.

"I guess once Lance gets his badge we can get registered for the contest." Liam stated.

"That would be good," Shiranui agreed, "I've never participated in one, but I've seen a few Contests on TV."

Looking around the new town, a young lets out a yawn, throwing her hands into the air and bending her back in a steep arch. She stretched for a moment before returning to her normal stance and looking around the town a moment. Rustboro was nothing like her hometown, but in a way, that was the best part, it made this all the more of an adventure. Beside her was a mankey, one that sniffed the air and let out a shriek. It wasn't nearly as happy about this as the girl was. He'd rather stay in the jungle than in some rustic old town. Regardless the two walked into town. It did not seem like she carried a single pokeball on her side, meaning this mankey did not go into a pokeball. Smiling wide and clutching her fist, khuba eagerly looked around for any trainers. "Lets get in a few matches before we take on this gym leader"

Shiranui thought about what routine he'd do in the Contest.

"Guess I'm up next" Lance said walking up the the challengers box. "Show me what you got" Roxanne said sending out geodude. "Alright, lets do this treecko" Lance called forth treecko. "The battle between Roxanne the gym leader and the challenger Lance will begin" the official said.

"Treecko pound" Lance ordered, Treecko flew at geodude knocking him a few feet. Geodude seemed unscathed.

"Geodude rock tomb" Roxanne called, rocks came from the ground and started surrounding treecko.

Treecko was soon trapped by the rocks, "Geodude now use rock throw" Ordered Roxanne.

"Treecko use your tail on the ground to propel yourself into the air" Lance was glad he watched Liam and shiranui's match beforehand. Treecko flew into the air, "Now use bullet seed" Treecko fired at geodude causing a lot of damage. "Now use absord" Treecko sapped life from geodude, causing geodude to faint. "Nice job treecko" Lance said. Roxanne then returned geodude to its pokeball.

"nice job" Roxanne said calling forth nosepass now. Lance returned treecko to his pokeball, "Lets go Zhonya" lance sent out his ralts now.

"Nosepass use rock tomb" Nosepass sent a bunch of rocks at Zhonya. "Zhonya use double team" lance said, Zhonya began duplicating herself.

Nosepass struck the duplicates of Zhonya, "Now use confusion" Lance said hitting nosepass and confusing the compass pokemon. "Now use disarming voice" Lance said as Zhonya let out a cry that inflicted damage on nosepass.

"Nosepass use discharge" Nosepass tried to use discharge but inflicted damage on itself.

"Finish nosepass with confusion" Lance ordered, Zhonya used confusion on Nosepass causing it to faint.

"Congratulations Lance" She said. "We did it Zhonya" Lance said picking up his pokemon. "I present to you the Stone Badge" Roxanne said handing Lance a badge. Lance walked back over to his friends, "First gym badge" Lance said with a big smile.

"Good job." Liam praised.

"Nice battling," added Shiranui.

"we should get going" lance said.

"Indeed we should," Shiranui agreed, "Our Pokémon will need a good rest at the Pokémon Centre after taking on a gym."

[pkken]

"Alright" lance said returning his Pokemon to their poke balls.

Liam also went to the Pokémon Center. While Chanceys healed the Pokémon, Joy informed the heroes of where the contest would be how to get registered.

After being informed of the location, Shiranui did some research on some of the intricacies of a Pokémon Contest. He had seen a few, but he knew there was more to them.

Liam knew what he wanted to do, and he knew that the Pokémon he had in mind could pull this off. He retrieved his Pokémon and went and registered. He then went and talked with his chosen Pokémon and practice the maneuver before going to the Contest Hall.

Shiranui altered his party and went out to practice some moves with the Pokémon he chose.
