I'M SO PROUD OF MY SON ;-;

Good post! Osveril is definitely on my top favs now!

I tried to make an image of Osveril doing a gracious(?) gesture, but the mess of shapes that came of it, while appropriate, sadly didn't look nearly meaningful enough. You'll have to take my word for his being grateful.

Btw, I can see some seriously mean verbal bullying in Osveril's future should he seek out Toun.

And that's after waking up to being thrown around by Jvan. At this rate, having had an abusive childhood might actually become a believable excuse for his misbehaviours.

I have a Cinead/Minus post incoming soon. I just have to let it rest like a steak and properly edit it.

In other news, I'll be off for Christmas with the famalam in a few days. Probably won't be especially active for a couple of weeks. When I get back, I'll be focussing down Cinead/Minus some more so that I don't hold up WrongEnd too much. However, if the Xos stuff progresses, I'll work on that, too. Cyclone and myself have a collab banked that one of us will post once Cyclone catches up to it with his individual posts. Then, finally, we can start the showdown collab.

Well the pacing is a little swift in places but I wanted to get the post done sooner rather than later. So here's more robots with feelings. Stay tuned for more!

Hey everyone, sorry for the double post.

This might be a question better served for the Off Topic board, but...well...I have a grammar question for those with a better education than me:

@Muttonhawk I don't have a list, but like you I know the pattern without necessarily knowing the rule. I have no idea what intransitive and transitive verbs are, let alone those labariostransititiveiaigjfjf...sos..h..elp verbs you mentioned later.

But wouldn't you be able to identify these words anyway? I mean, raise and rose are two very different words in my mind. I would write, 'he raised his hand', but I wouldn't write, 'he rose his hand'. I would write, 'he laid the body on the table,' but I wouldn't write, 'he lied the body on the table'. You don't necessarily need to be able to recite these pairs to know when to use one or the other, no?
But then again, I haven't looked up what transitive and intransitive verbs are, so I might be speaking gibberish for all I know.

@Kho I'll give you the problem sentences:

Cinead laid awake, staring at the yellowing morning sky. Inga's breathing rose and lowered gently beside him.

I was uneasy about those two sentences. The first one, I found out, was incorrect and the second one was correct. Thing is, I couldn't tell at face value why they were so. I guess I didn't have the intuition in my head to separate 'laid' and 'lied' in that context for whatever reason.

The written rule isn't too hard to understand.

Thing is, knowing this rule is a blessing and a curse because now I have a reason to be pedantic about something that probably won't be noticed by most people. Stoopit grammar, grumblegrumble...

@Muttonhawk Hmm, I would not word those sentences like that. Purely based on intuition, I would write: 'Cinead lay awake, staring...Inga's breathing rose and lowered gently beside him.'
(I'm not sure, but something about the word 'lowered' makes me slightly uncomfortable. I'd probably use 'fell' rather than 'lowered').

Tbh, I find the word 'lied' slightly problematic when using it. It always sounds clumsy.
Rather than, say, 'And there, under the tree, where we lied many a night...', I'd replace 'lied' with 'lay' in every situation. I don't think I would ever use the word 'lied' unless it is in its 'dishonesty' meaning.

Edit:

I get where you're coming from, Kho. Lay (and fell) are probably better words to use in the examples I gave.

Wiktionary is at least telling me that lay and lied can be interchangeable. The pages on lay and lie are fraught with all sorts of interesting stuff, including notes on formality, so I'm going to go looking some more. Watch this space!

Edit: By the way, 'lay' is still transitive only.

Edit2: LIED AND LAY ARE NOT INTERCHANGABLE unless you are speaking informally. Read on.

@Muttonhawk I'm no grammarian or linguist or whathaveyou. Just an amateur who goes 'that looks wrong' and 'that feels right' XDD (if anything, I'm pretty sure you're the one doing one form or another of the philosophy of language ^^')
Lemme know what you find :)

Okay, so I've learnt a few things.

1. Kho was right.
2. Wiktionary does not refer back to which definition of lie that lied was the simple past tense and past participle of, which is great for making confusion of doofuses like Muttonhawk.
3. Lied is only ever the past tense of lie of the 'pants on fire' variety.
4. The proper past tense of lie of the 'down on the ground' variety is indeed lay.
5. My examples for lied should have been lay, though these are still intransitive, which means that Cinead did indeed LAY awake and the man did indeed LAY on his bed.
6. I am not the only person to be confused by all this.
7. English continues to be a poo-poo language for poo-poo heads but it is still the only one I know well enough to write prose in.
8. ROMANS AND GERMANS SHOULD NEVER TRY TO MAKE A COMMON LANGUAGE. EVER. THIS WAS A MISTAKE.

I'll just put this down to my colonial sensibilities putting me lacking in comparison to Kho's intuition on the language.

Sorry if I haven't been active here for a very long time... Sure most of you forgot about me.

I think I might just withdraw properly. I'm never going to be able to catch back up enough to get back into the swing of things.

Oh, we didn't forget about you, mate. You aren't the only one that has ever taken a hiatus from this RP. If you wanted to catch up, all you'd need to do is check out the summaries and dive in somewhere again.

But, if you'd prefer not to continue, that's okay too. Thanks for playing in the meantime! If you want to join again some time, you'd be more than welcome.

The moral of this post is not to burn yourself out protecting yourself from unseen enemies when your allies are just as dangerous.

Also if you ask for a big ass crate full of grenades four days before Christmas, you might actually get one. Thanks, Teknall!

Also, Niciel (@Scarifar) might have noticed Teknall harvesting a bunch of Valley of Peace mist. He's sneaky, but there's only so much you can do to hide something like that. She might not have noticed, although she does have a fairly solid surveillance network which probably could have detected a disturbance of the sort where a whole bunch of air is vacuumed up.

@Bright_Ops, we'd love it if you could stick around and keep playing. If catching up is your only concern, then reading the summaries should be adequate for the most part, and I have a list of recent major events (i.e. most posts since Turn 10 with significant consequences beyond the personal sphere) with links in the Zero'th post of the IC which should catch you up on the current state of affairs pretty quickly.

And I haven't forgotten you. If you were still around when I got up to it, I have a post which could very much benefit from having a chat with Death, although that's still some distance in the future so don't count on it being any time soon.

Of course, if you still feel like you need to drop out, that's fine too. Sometimes we find we've gone in over our heads, or real life catches up to us and we don't have time any more, or we've lost interest, or something like that, and that's okay. If you wish to leave, that's up to you, and you'll be welcomed back if you return.

That’s the spirit! At least, that’s an optimistic way of thinking. I doubt it’ll help it whatever makes someone have hope.
