Can't wait to see what you come up with.

The picture is an inked cover for a comic book called the Herald, which features HP Lovecraft and Nikolai Tesla as a dynamic monster hunting duo. Funny thing is, I haven't read the comic yet, but it was inspired by this piece of artwork, which also inspired me to come up with this RP.

Here's a little timeline that might help.

Timeline: Marks how many years since the monarchy ended.

Winter of 449 - Isaacs & Hartwell began their research into the supernatural.

Winter of 451 - The Mangled Ones first appeared in the Main District.

Spring of 452 - President Chambers calls for Martial Law. Isaacs & Hartwell create The Consortium and begin immediate enlistment. The president appoints Oscar Ulrich as Head Chief.

Summer of 452 - Main District is evacuated. President Chambers and his Cabinet are successfully extracted. The Mangled Ones grow in population. Other strange occurrences and monster sightings are beginning to rise in the inner shell district.

Spring of 453 - The entire main and inner shell districts are overrun. The first class of Consortium graduates are deployed out onto the field. 50 total.

Summer of 453 - Oscar Ulrich abandons post in an attempt to rescue his family from the inner shell district.

Fall of 453 - The famous clock tower monument in the Main District is crawling with Mangled Ones, forming a living wall around it. Large, unidentifiable monsters are beginning to appear in the inner shell districts. Oscar Ulrich is reported as KIA.

Summer of 454 - The military fortifies walls to contain the spread. There are still millions of Aegis Luna citizens inside the inner shell and main districts. Tom Reitz is appointed as new Head Chief of the Consortium. 12 Investigators from the 1st class are left. 40 new Investigators have graduated from the second class to fill in the ranks.

Winter of 454 - There are only 30 active Investigators left. Our story begins...

Isaacs and Hartwell

Dr. Isaacs and Professor Hartwell both attended college at Luna Institute. They've been joined at the hip ever since grade school, fascinated with pulp science fiction writings and new technology. They eventually worked their way into the steam industry as inventors, making several patents for airship mechanics and construction vehicles. Their work landed them a government position at the science division of Aegis Luna's city advisory board. Their leadership in the Consortium is secondary to Head Chief, Oscar Ulrich, but since his recent passing, has been under the strict delegation of Tom Reitz.

Tom Reitz

The Consortium's new Head Chief. Tom Reitz was transferred over from the military's Special Intelligence division. Unlike Oscar Ulrich, Tom is a no-nonsense hard ass that wants immediate results. He was at ground zero where the monsters first appeared. Mr. Reitz lead the successful evacuation mission of the President and his Cabinet.

1st Class

Mako Tsujimoto

Mako was an assistant to Dr. Isaacs and Professor Hartwell before The Mangled Ones appeared. He takes on the support role in the field as a Wrangler, recharging energy guns and holding lanterns in his mobile containment pack. He keeps enchanted skulls on his person that supposedly wards away evil spirits.

Zuma Agbeko

Zuma was also a first class graduate. He was originally a steelworker before the nightmare began. Like most people, he saw and heard the advertisements about enlisting into The Consortium and felt obligated to help the city. Zuma is usually designated as front line assault, heading tactical teams with heavy weapons armament.

2nd Class

Latika

Latika is a 2nd class graduate into the Consortium. She was originally enlisted into the military before a request of transfer was ordered by Tom Reitz. Their relationship is unknown. Even though she is a new graduate, she's already a top Investigator. She specializes in reconnaissance and prefers to use weapons that won't weigh her down.

Gregory Stills

Gregory Stills is the youngest Consortium member. He is a 2nd class graduate that is eager to prove himself.

Other NPCs

James Kepler

Isaacs & Hartwell's primary assistant. He is keen on various sciences, and is known for refining several facets of modern day industrial steam technology. He is mostly known for the patented Kepler Steampack, an instrument that allows you to leap at long distances.

Carmina

Born into a caravan community that has a long history of dabbling with occult and superstitious quandaries. She works part time at the Consortium HQ as a bartender and a secondary assistant to Professor Hartwell. She has no desire to become an investigator, but wants to provide whatever service she can to the cause.

The Mangled Ones

"It is unclear as to whether or not these beasts are reanimated corpses, or caused by some advanced parasite. Their bite is not contagious. Several Investigators have received multiple wounds from The Mangled Ones, but showed no signs of turning. There are documented incidents of operating in packs. When done so, they appear more self-aware and intelligent. This is contradictory to other reports indicating how inefficient they are in large groups. The Mangled Ones are fast, unforgiving, and relentless. After several tests, we've concluded that they are scent-driven creatures. Strategically using aromatic sprays and bombs is key to throwing them off your trail."

The Spirit Wraiths

"We owe our success to Dr. Isaacs and Professor Hartwell. If it were not for their research into the supernatural, I doubt we'd having a fighting chance against these things. They do not react to physical harm, and while they cannot attack us directly, they can possess objects and people around them to do their bidding. Dr. Isaacs believes these Spirit Wraiths are responsible for The Mangled Ones different types of behavior. Their fiercest weapon is the illusion of fear. They can enter your thoughts and pry your mind of darkest secrets and use them against you.

Our energy weapons and lanterns do nothing more but contain them. Permanent destruction of these Spirit Wraiths are still a mystery we've yet to solve. Our anti-wraith equipment acts as a defensive enchantment of sorts. That is until you've captured a spirit in your lantern. Professor Hartwell theorizes that the union of a spirit with the specialized containment cell causes a momentary resonance, making the lantern a homing beacon that attracts other nearby spirits. Do well to use that information as a diversionary tactic. If not, make sure the Wrangler of your unit is near so you can swiftly hand off the lantern. Their containment packs are heavily shielded, significantly lowering the resonance levels to avoid Wraith detection."

Anti-Wraith Equipment by Dr. Isaacs

"I will spare you the finer intricacies of these complex tools and give you my spiel in layman's terms. The energy weapons are charged by the small battery packs carried on your person. These batteries are replaceable, and will take precisely 10 seconds before your weapon becomes operable. Remember, aim in short bursts until you've successfully latched onto the Wraith. When you do, it is critical that you cock back the lever on your weapon to cause the reverse pull of the captured spirit. At five feet, you should already have your lantern out. Simply hold it out in front of you, and the brilliance of our invention will do the rest.

Once the spirit is contained inside the lantern, it will not cause further harm. Do well to hand it over to the Wrangler, so he/she can transfer the Wraith over to their containment pack. Your lantern can only hold one spirit at a time. Also understand that while it is in the lantern, it will draw the attention of surrounding spirits. While this equipment acts as a defensive barrier, those wards decrease significantly when dealing with multiple spirits. Execute your strategy well and do best not to get overwhelmed. "

Energy Weapon

This is just one example of the different types of energy weapons that can be used. While they are primarily used for capturing Wraiths, Investigators have also used it on The Mangled Ones, as it momentarily stuns/confuses them.

Lantern

Comes in all shapes, sizes, and decor. Many Investigators have taken pride in their Lanterns, some even give them names. When an Investigator dies, their Lantern is placed on their tombstone and is always lit.

"Our city is damned. What ghastly things came shrieking in the night, I dare not say. They pounced from the gallows, swinging from burdened nooses. Mortal laws nor capital punishment bind them. They roam our streets as agents of the underworld. Constructs of the Black Cleric, the leader of the Yellow King Disciples. Their devilry has long held sway over Aegis Luna, shaping its once beautiful face into an unspeakable terror. We live in constant fear as our city slowly eats itself alive. The Consortium dwindles in number as the unnameable horrors continue to manifest into living nightmares . Death is our only salvation. I no longer wish to pursue a life full of pain and agony. Should you find this letter, please burn my body along with the rest of my family. There was a time when all the world looked upon our little country in awe. Airships filled our skies. Our wondrous architecture stood tall and proud, symbolizing a great and prosperous economy. We focused on invention and science, using industrial steam technology to do more than just power our vehicles and homes. Our former Monarchy turned Democratically run government united us like never before. We were all in this together. Such a bond never existed under a ruling crown. There was a sense of belonging that could be felt among us all.

Now look. Look out outside. What do you see?

I cannot fathom what roams these streets. The mangled ones. The drifting ghosts of the wicked. The tar of the underworld has corroded our streets. Many have fled. The government has put out a martial law to help the police escort as many of us as they can. The outer districts are safe, but the inner shell and main district is completely overrun. Where did they all come from!? How could such a madness spread over night? Some say it was the doings of a cult. The Black Cleric and the Yellow King Disciples. These zealots of an old religion wished for Aegis Luna to turn away from science. To focus wholeheartedly on the constructs of the past. I am not a god-fearing man, but I surely am afraid of what hells these fools have unearthed. The military seems to be keeping these creatures at bay, but it's the Consortium that is working around the clock. Their advanced weaponry is putting more of a dent into this chaos, but those things... they multiply, a never ending wave beating at our shores. Perhaps this city is lost. But if we don't stop them here, what's to keep them from ravaging the world?

The Consortium

The Consortium: The paranormal investigators operate under The Consortium, an unofficial branch of the city's science division. Originally founded by pioneers of advanced technology, Dr. Isaacs and Professor Hartwell. This branch was created in light of several oddities making an appearance some 5 years ago. Citizens claimed to have spotted apparitions in the night. Isaacs and Hartwell's curiosities had peaked when they both saw one with their own eyes. Thus began new research.

Through trial and error, they developed an energy-based weapon that resonated with the negative particles of these spirits, phasing them into captivity by using lantern-like devices. After amassing an overwhelming collection of lanterns, they realized it would be more efficient to transfer them all into one singular prison. A large containment cell is kept in the basement of The Consortium HQ, generated by several high-powered Tesla Coils. While all this was going on, the general public wasn't aware of Aegis Luna's ghost problem. Rumors and stories were circulating about, but thanks to the government, there was never any substantial evidence that leaked into the press. Then the mangled ones appeared. These things weren't ethereal spirits. They were mutilated corpses that could tear at you. Eat you alive. Then the other terrors came. Things that cannot be so simply described other than hellspawn. Like the mangled ones, these too, were physical beasts.

Dr. Isaacs and Professor Hartwell was approached by the government to spearhead a campaign against these things. Thus, the Investigators were born. Backgrounds vary from military to collegiate. There is a rigorous trial involved in order to be fully initiated into the group. There are currently 30 active PIs.

The Basics

We will be playing as paranormal investigators trying to undo the horrors created by the Yellow King Disciples. It has been only a year since the Mangled Ones began wreaking havoc and Aegis Luna is on the verge of being overrun. The main and inner shell districts have been completely taken over. The outer shell districts are maintained relatively intact due to the military. The city-state is in a wide spread panic. While martial law has been issued, The Consortium is Aegis Luna's only hope. Our branch of operations is loosely affiliated with the science division of the city's advisory council. There will be a supernatural lovecraftian element. A steampunk ghostbusters concept with more scare than laughs.
