The blonde elf girl had considered a hundred different things in the brief moments when the wrapped and bandaged elf's figure had loomed over her. Now that his attention was occupied she decided a few more things. For one, she had absolutely no aversion to prancing about in the nude but very few people saw fit to protect a brazen strumpet as they did a shy maiden.

Moving quickly, bringing a flush to her cheeks through practice at feigning emotion, and she shuffled sideways with arms covering herself as best she could. She considered using magic to make herself invisible again but the shuffling, the blushing, it made a more convincing feint than if she were to simply vanish.

Finally she crossed the path and disappeared into the brush once more, moving aside plants to find her bag and clothes. Silently she wished she'd brought one of her more mundane dresses along so she could better play the role she wanted to. All she had was her dancer's outfit, one that somehow made her look more revealing than if she were naked. It took her several long minutes to put on all the rings, anklets, toerings, necklaces, earrings and the armlet.

I just felt the need to throw an equation in the description for fun! Math is so much cooler when you're not in school anymore. I once calculated the vector force acted upon a driver after she was in a car accident. It made her boyfriend, who was with me at work, feel much better.

I couldn't do that now though. It's been far too many years since I've used those formulae. (That's "formulas" for the degenerate yanks who are kneecapping their language *grins* It's colours, not colors! I truly expect them to drop the "k" in "knife" next.)

I just know what I would do in a permadeath universe. First, cower somewhere, then learn crafting and thidly never go out alone out of fear of being murdered by a giggling teenager who thinks killing is fun and then lock my door at night at all times.

That is an option but the protagonists in most fiction are type A personalities. Why would this be any different?

Personally, I would go crazy knowing my life, my choices were being made for me and without me. I would feel the urge to be involved. The very idea someone could yank my life support or that everyone would fail because I wasn't strong enough to be out there helping would make do it.

I would add to this debate that the reason why current non-permanent death systems are in place simply are too avoid players leaving their games for another.

Simply put players do not have this option when they cannot log out.

Perhaps here one simply becomes paralyzed upon death, staring out their own blank empty eye until they are raised from the dead.

Imagine spending weeks in that state waiting for someone to come help you because your entire party was wiped out. One could go ma waiting for another group to save yours.

@PyroDash888 Nigh impossible for twenty first technology but I wouldn't rule your theory out. Magic is as magic does after all.

My point was more that the virtual world has a time limit. A player doesn't know when this will end but it must at some point. One good power outage caused by a simple icestorm and you all die. If the government decides that the way to wake everyone up is to turn off or smash the server and possibly everyone dies. What if your family decides to pull the plug, that nobody deserves to live like a vegetable?

Heaven help you if the server is running Windows 98 or Vista.

You may be living in another world but the real world carries the virtual world like Atlas and if Atlas stumbles the world falls.

Either way... you are dying. Don't forget there also is an atrophication angle. A human being can only lie in a bed for approximately five weeks before they start to experience organ failure.

In order to avoid this a registered nurse has to feed you intravenously, to massage your muscles regularly and roll you over every few hours.

Once you finally succeed at logging out you have months of rehabilitation ahead of you and that's assuming you even have insurance and can afford such treatments.

It does help if you have someone more respectable to vouch for a goblin. Assallya had a kobold for long time companion. It made certain things rather difficult. Everyone wants to kill the goblin or kobold before he can go back and gather others, like the local tribes don't know where human settlements are... Pheh. Smallfolk. Never could trust the commoners to think.

Background: Sarah is a bitter, tired cubicle worker for a software company that spends her days doing nothing but poring over code seeking out small imperfections that inhibit programs from reaching their maximum efficiency. It is a tasking job. It is a boring job. It also is very sedentary which has led to her becoming a bit chubby. All in all, she is quite unsatisfied and will take any opportunity for an escapist fantasy that presents itself.

Writing Sample:
Ashen slipped across the killing field, past the muted gray corpses that littered it and recouped some of her limited health by reaching out and touching the corpses. From afar it would seem as if offering some form of last rites but no, she was siphoning that last of their life forces as the spun away into nothing. Already the corpses out of the corner of her eye were deresolving.

This was the part she hated, the low level grind. Fighting through hordes of chipmunks, rabbits and enduring the small tutorials. How she hated all of it. Mind you, she loved gaming. More precisely she loved the politics and the factions, the role playing aspect of the game. What was the point in defeating some meaningless computer construct? Did they feel pain, or get upset? No, she would much rather kill players or be killed by them in turn. At least then something happened, there was pain and pathos. One could reach out and exert their power over another.

Packing up, peering at the pathetic loot that had been dropped by the hapless constructs she considered the poor bastard she had murdered earlier. The poor bastard was only half her level, which wasn't saying much given she'd just started herself and she used him to tank through much of this boring crap before she kissed him to thank him for his help. He didn't even notice his hit points dropping until it was far too late and now she had all of his starting money. His items, well, they were useless so she left them where they lay so that he could recover them but that was only because they had no resale value.

The other reason she had that boy to tank was that she was horrible at combat. She fumbled at using swords and took several tries simply to nock arrows. That's why she had her skeletons, to handle all that mediocrity and so she could focus more appropriately on the movement of her pieces on the grand chess board. It was also why she liked being with other, like minded, people who also liked the politics, that liked the idea of ruling the game and not just being good at killing random monsters ad nauseum.

That was when the "Dark Lord" appeared. The pompous fool yammered on but thankfully his words were short but his claims. She checked her ability to log out and found it to be true. She had no idea what that meant. She didn't believe it to be true. It was probably just some stupid glitch and that idiot took advantage to incur fear. She had to admire that. If he could take credit for the hack then he was likely going to make everyone wonder what else he could do, what else could he hack?

Then ther was the other question. If he wasn't lying. Things would be bad. She still thought it was a quick and dirty hack but what if it wasn't? What happened if someone died now? Did they respawn back at the local temples? She was going to have find that out and for that she needed a victim.

• Steal Life: With a touch this active skill steals a small amount of health from an opponent. It can also be used on a dead corpse but only once.
• Wall of Bones: Stout bones erupt from the earth and divide a battlefield making for smaller groups for a group to deal with. They can be broken down but doing so takes time.
