I guess it isn't impossible? Can something malfunction from off to on though, and then fully pilot despite it being a complicated machine?

I don't think there's a problem with that. Worst case, you'd just be making them more unusable, which would usually be good. But if what Ahm said is true, someone should be here piloting it.
