Aggie led Cameron through a back door and up a flight of stairs. Then they went through another door and entered Aggie's upstairs home. The apartment was comprised of dark wooden floors and walls, large windows that let in the sunlight, comfortable second hand furniture, and had an earthy, herbal scent that gave a place a homey sort of feeling. The kitchenette and living room areas were conjoined into on large room. Aggie settled Cameron down on one of the couches before moving off to one of the bookshelves that lined the walls and taking a stack of leather bound journals in her arms.
She set the journals down on the coffee table in front of Cameron before moving back to the kitchen. She passed a slightly open window, where a calico cat was lying on the sill and napping in the sunlight among one of Aggie's window gardens. Her familiar, Mona, raised her head as Aggie ran a hand down her back and purred in pleasure. Then the cat's eyes turned to Cameron and she stared at him suspiciously before hissing in a vaguely threatening way and lying back down to continue her nap. It was the greeting Mona typically reserved for him whenever the hybrid came to call.
Aggie leaned against the large island counter for a moment. The counter, as well as the whole kitchen area of the place, had been why she picked this particular building to rent. It was spacious, had many storage cupboards, ad the island with its plethora of counter space and the counter top stove made it a perfect place do do some spelling, potion making, or any other kind of witchery. She had her cell phone in hand and watched Cameron flipping through her family's books, then she finally worked up the nerve to call Winnie.
Winifred Brier answered on the third ring. "Hey, little sister," she greeted, her tone bright.
"Winnie, I need to meet with Henri," Aggie said, and she heard her older sister chuckle.
"Cutting right to the chase, that is so you."
"I need a meeting with Henri, Winnie. Can you make it happen?" Aggie turned away from Cameron and braced herself against the counter edge.
"Aggie, you know that you're welcome at the manor anytime. You practically grew up here and Henri likes you."
There was a coolness to that last statement that Aggie pretended she hadn't heard. "It's not a social call, Win. This is an, um, urgent matter. And the meeting's not for me."
"Well, who is it for?" Winnie asked.
Aggie hesitated. This could be the deal breaker. "Cameron Rogers."
"Cameron Rogers?" Winnie exclaimed and Aggie winced. "You're still working with him?"
"Sometimes."
"You know how Mom feels, how I feel, how everyone..."
"Winifred, this is important," Aggie said, interrupting her sister before the lecture could begin. "This is really important, and I wouldn't be asking unless I had to. So can you get us a meeting with Henri Moreau or not?"
Winnie was quiet, and when she finally spoke her tone was overly polite. "You know how Mr. Moreau feels about Mr. Rogers. But for you...I'm sure he'd make an exception." The cool tone was back and this time Aggie winced at it. Winnie would never forget how Henri wanted to hired her younger sister to be his family's witch over her after their mother had resigned from the position. "I'll text you." And then Winnie hung up.
Aggie emitted a frustrated sigh as she dialed the next number. She didn't had familial connections in the other vampire families, but she did have friends, satisfied customers, and a lot of favors. She called them all in, her favors with the Kent family, the Gracey family, as many as she could. As she predicted they were all reluctant when they heard who the meeting was for, but they promised to do what they could and get back to her. When she finished her last call her phone buzzed and she saw that it was a text from her sister.
Winthrop Hotel. Presidential Suite. 8 PM. Stay with him the whole time. Do not be late.
Aggie approached the couch where Cam was sitting and cleared her throat. "Any luck?" she asked, and after giving him a moment to respond she spoke again "I got Moreau," she told him. "Tonight at eight at his hotel. I'm still waiting on the others."
She sank onto a sofa and made a face. "I really don't want to ask this, but is there way that I can see the bodies?" She suppressed a grimace at the thought. "The latest ones, ideally. There may be residual energy that I could find. Might help us figure out what's doing this. Of course the best bet would be the one that's still alive, but I don't have contacts or friends at Waverly."
After a few moments she leaned forward in her seat, a gleam in her green eyes, and snatched up one of the journals. A potion book. "Although...I could maybe get us in to see him." Aggie looked back up at Cameron after she found the page she had been looking for. "It depends on you, though. How much you want to talk to this guy. And how much you trust me. This thing...it'll be tricky but I can do it. And it would probably be frowned upon. But it could get us in and out of there without...raising alarm?"
