Jais Haven
Aurelia Nakamiji
Acion Nakamiji
The sky over the city was uneventful, as always. Small glimpses of white steam lingered into cottons of cloud, decorating the ever-growing eternal blue. Ever since the dawn of the hero group Sky Knight, never once a villain dared to taint the beautiful blue with such unmatchable shades of evil. The sky was now the most merciful place in this prosperous city. A place where no harms could be done. A true heaven
”Ok guys, please continue your patrol as usual. I...have a little bit of an errand that I have to run.”“Ok boss.” A member of the Sky Knight, who was levitating on his own, and was holding a short sword, answered. “But do you mind if I ask. What sort of errand? Is it somewhat related to that box you’re carrying?”
The beautiful silver haired lady, the sky’s defender, the leader of Sky Knight, Aurelia Nakamiji sighed slightly, her lips curved upwards into a small smile, her eyes turning down to the item she carried, remembering that little promise she made with him.
”It’s for my stupid little brother.”She gave one final salute to the group, as she turned around her longitudinal axis and began diving, using the same movements she used when in combat. But her movements were more relaxed, and more excessive, having more unnecessary movement. Before the momentum brought her crashing onto something, her grace in aerobatic maneuvers brought her to a stable position, as she continued her trip down the road towards Komei, her former school.
The winged lady soon ascended, getting past the height of the gate, did a mid-air roll and landed softly on the tip of her toe, her hands still gripped tightly onto the box. For a brief moment, she was engulfed in that wonderful but bitter feelings of nostalgia. This used to be her school, a place where she could call her second home, where she was most welcomed. Her teachers loved her, her friends adored her, it was heaven. Now...it was all a thing of the past. Her friends all graduated, most of them were all consumed by their daily lives earning for a living fighting against treacherous villains. Some even lost their lives in the process. Aurelia wouldn’t want to be reminded of it. Aside from delivering this box to her brother, Acion Nakamiji, she also took this time to remember those dear memories that she made during her years here. She wondered if the teachers still remembered her, especially her favorite, the one she could call her second father, the Frenchman, Jais.
Almost by instinct, due to years of repetition, she headed for the front entrance to the school’s block. But this time, she was blocked by a very large and very well-built figure, wearing black sunglasses.
”Excuse me lady, you are not permitted to enter unless you state your identification.”Aurelia was dumbfounded by his statement.
What?
He did not know her?!
Come on, she’s the famous Sky Defender! And she used to be a student of this school!
”Uhh, Sarge...Don’t you remember me? I’ve talked with you once!”He remained unconvinced.
Oh dear…
Now this is a problem.
She was in a hurry this morning, so she forgot to bring her ID card. Oh dear, oh dear…
The girl tried searching her wallet for it, but it was not there. Double-checked, but to no avail. But there was her old student ID card, which although was totally useless with the door, still had her face, her date of birth and her old class printed on the card. Hopefully this would be ok?
She handed him the card. Sarge looked at it for a few moments, and then....
”I’m sorry but this-” He said as he turned to her...But she wasn’t there. Quickly turning to the gate, he was baffled that she was already way inside. Aurelia had calculated the possibility of him not approving the card, so she quietly slipped through him when he was busy reading the card.
”Just give me a few minutes! I meant no harm to the school!”At first, Sarge tried to use his chain quirk to subdue her, but after a brief look at the card again, he finally realized who she was...Man, she was still the same, after all these years.
The girl, after escaping Sarge’s grasp, used everything she can reminisces to put together the path to the front desk, where she would be able to ask Ms Mako to call Acion to meet her. Hopefully she was still there.
She finally arrived there. And before her, both the secretary, and surprisingly, her former teacher, Jais, was there.
”Sensei?” She asked, as her eyes turned to look at her blinded old teacher.
Jais had turned to leave the front desk when he saw Aurelia walk in behind him, even though he was not facing her, he smiled.
“Aurelia!” He turned around his smile still on his face.
“It’s been awhile child.” He said in a cheery voice. Walking up to her he looked down at her...despite not seeing her with his eyes.
“What brings you back here?” He bent down and took the girl in his arms in a big bear hug. Most of his students still kept in touch with him, and he considered many of them as adoptive children. Aurelia was one of them as well. She had a lot of talent, and thought was a bit of a hothead and he could never quite get that ‘for the glory’ out of her. Not that it made her a bad hero… but still she was young and had time to learn still.
”Sensei!” Seeing her ‘father’ again after years of separation filled the girl with overwhelming joy, as she rushed to let him hug her. After all these years...and yet...his smell, his muscle strength and his warmth never changed. It was as cozy, as heart-warming just like her real parents. She would have returned the hug if she hadn’t been holding the heavy box.
He stood back up and ruffled her hair slightly, a trademark habit for his ‘kids’ Which annoyed Kagura to no end back in the day, among many many others. Yet he did remember her using it on her daughter Mina a few times.
He glanced down and saw the package. Noticing it was heavy by the way she was carrying it, “Here let me take that..” He said as he quickly grabbed it from her, lifting it with what looked like ease. But he let an internal grunt of effort. What the hell was in that box?
His mind clicked to Acion, who was now one of his students as well. It must be for him. Even coming to his conclusion, Jais gave one of his over the top fake smile.
“You shouldn’t have! My birthday isn’t for a few months!” He said, giving one of his deep laughs.
”Geeez! Don’t treat me like a kid sensei! I’m already an adult!” Her cheeks could be seen flushing pink, a mixture of slight anger and embarrassment.
”And this? It’s not for you! It’s for my brother, Acion, who is studying here at the moment.”Looking at him, he was obviously curious of the box’s content. She carefully placed her good arm beneath the box to support it, and opened it with the other hand. Inside were a bunch of metals: metal greaves, metal gauntlet and even a shirt with several piece of metal placed within it. Each wasn’t very heavy to carry, but all of them combined could toll to 30 kg
”Since I have a bit of connection with several equipment sellers, my brother asked me to buy this for him, so that he can train his muscles.” She looked down on those piece of equipment.
”Geez, to think that he would be wearing all of this. Baka…”The last word she muttered under her breathe. But that’s her brother. He wasn’t that useless little brother she knew ten years ago. Even if she had to admit that there were many things about him that she could not understand, like his God-complex. Just really? Nobody compares themselves to God. Arrogance had its limits. But she couldn’t deny that he certainly had an unparalleled confidence and willpower. She initially didn’t, but was forced to believe so.
Jais only chuckled.
“You are still a kid to me little one.” He said softly as he then gave a fake frown at her saying it wasn’t for him. Once inspecting it after she opened it, and listening to her explaining the purpose of them. He gave a thoughtful look as he thought about Acion’s battle today. Not what he would recommend to focus on training at the moment. But still he gave the boy credit for trying.
He closed the box and walked it over to the counter to the mail section, writing a quick note on top of the box and placed it on the incoming mail pile. He felt sorry for the one in charge of delivering that package to the dorm. As he did this he nodded,
“Ah yes. Acion… He’s one of the students I’m overseeing at the moment actually. It didn’t click that he was your little brother.”Jais looked back to his former student and said,
“ I do admit, he’s an odd one, didn’t do too bad on his test today. But he has some promise. Actually I’ve got a class full of potentials this year. I swear they are going to be the death of me this year if they keep at their pace they set on their first day.” He heard the bell ring for lunch and shrugged.
“Would you want to spare a few minutes to eat lunch with this old man? Be nice to catch up a bit.”“Sure!” She cheerfully said.
”Perhaps then I can meet my little brother of mine. I want to deliver this to him personally...since it has been quite long since we last met face to face.”Jais groaned inwardly as she said she wanted to deliver it personally. Apparently he was that poor man who had to carry this package to it’s owner. He picked it up with a grunt and smiled.
“Hopefully he isn’t picking fights with the entire school on the first day like someone else I knew…” He said looking pointedly at her. Her lips curved into a pout, with hints of childishness and irritation. He was clearly indicating her. He wasn’t really intending to hide his intentions during times like this. But that was what made him so memorable. A rebellious student, and a mischievous teacher.
At the lunch offer, Aurelia led the way, her usual proactiveness taking over. The sky over the city wasn’t very eventful now, especially during the day, when criminal activities were at its lowest. Surely, a few minutes lunch with her old teacher wouldn’t be too bad. Both of them arrived at the cafeteria, purchasing their food and headed outside, as the girl preferred a spacious area with fresh air more than an air conditioned room.
”Hmm...I sure miss the scent of the food here. It’s delicious as always…”Jais sighed as he placed his coffee on the table after a sip.
“I don’t know what food you're smelling.” He said with a mischievous smile. He Probably just sick of it for being here for so long. Besides...nothing can compare to the food he could get in France… oh he wished for a genuine baguette with some brie. The japanese cooks just couldn’t get it right. And he for sure couldn’t bake for his life.
“It all tastes like cardboard to me.” He said with a longing sigh as baguettes with brie filled his thoughts.
”It surely is better for me.” Her face turned to frown in slight disgust as she remembered the first month after graduation, fresh and innocent. Because of her inexperience and a little unluckiness, she did not earn enough for her living. At the time, it was instant noodles, snacks and a litre of mineral water shared between her meals. God, it was nightmare! Luckily, it was thanks to her skills and talents did she gradually managed to earn her reputation among the heroes, and was then reowned as Sky Defender. But man...it was an unforgettable experience.
Noticing how silly both the teacher and the student had been, they both burst into small giggles of genuine amusement. Ahh...nostalgia.
The two of them spent another few minutes finishing their lunch and talking about whatever they could recollect about their past experience with each other. And the entire process was the same: mentioning, talking, arguing a bit about it then finally smiling over past memories. They say that the most beautiful thing to talk about are memories. This was probably the best example of it.
”Sister?”It was then that Acion, who just came down after finishing all the tedious class of regular classes, realized who was here, and the box next to her. It was totally unexpected. The boy did call for her sister to do his order, but he had never expected her to deliver it to him directly. He was looking at her in agony of surprise as she slowly stood up and faced him.
”Hello little bro.” She smiled at him mischievously.
”What’s wrong, cat got your tongue?” She noticed his surprised face.
Indeed, he was very much caught off-guard by her sudden appearance, especially after she disappeared for years when Acion was still young. They still maintained contact, but they all had their lives to live, and an emotionless message could never be as good as a direct confrontation. And here, in front of his eyes, she was there.
Acion’s joy was seen perfectly clear on his face for a brief moment, before returning to his usual self.
”Hello sister.” He kept his usual positive attitude as he faced her.
”And no, my tongue is still very much intact. Limbs are not lost so easily.” Then again, his confident demeanor.
”Geez. You’re still keeping that little childish attitude of yours. I tell you, fix it, or you will end up becoming a social reject for that.””You’re the one to talk sister!” He countered his sister’s saying.
”You aren’t so different from me in the childish regards.”Aurelia’s face turned red in an instant, afraid of somebody catching it on that.
”W-Who told you about that?! You don’t know me!””Seems like you are more old-timed than I do, sister. You think that I wouldn’t try to get to know you during those years of separation? Father told me a lot about you, including your secret relationship with Alb-””Shut up!” Aurelia forcefully blocked her younger brother’s lips with her hands, her voice nearly shouting.
That old man!
Could he stop spouting nonsense to this already spiritually extremist like Acion?!
Jais, seeing his student and former students, the pair of siblings, finally met, knew that he was becoming an outcast here, and it would be rude of him to interfere with their talk, so he decided to excuse himself and left the cafeteria.
”Geez! It appears that I cannot convince you. She said, her frustration hinted.
”Your determination is waning.” He retaliated, again with the will and determination thing he usually say. Aurelia paid no mind to such provocation for she had gotten used to it.
”Anyway…” Aurelia turned to the box that Jais left next to his seat.
”Here’s what you’ve ordered. I’ve hand-picked it myself for you. I think that 30 kg are probably your limits, so I try to get it under that range.“”Honestly, you should consider following my footsteps, learning to increase your agility and technique more than power. You have the same potential as I do. This is just...a little excessive.””It’s excessive, but it’s effective all-around. The weight will force me to be faster and use my muscle a lot more. And it takes a lot of determination to wear this thing all day.” Acion replied as he took the box from her sister, opened it and tried some of it on.
Wait...
All day?
”You mean you aren’t taking it off after training?” ”Only during certain time. Like combat, showering or sleeping.” Acion replied at once.
’Oh dear…’ That’s her bro.
”...I guess I can’t force you otherwise. You are strong enough to be independent.” She patted the gauntlet that he just tried on in a form of encouragement. This thus enabled the boy to leak his emotions again, this time in a more appreciative way.
”Thank you...sister.” He bowed with gratitude to her, in a way a little bit too polite considering their relationship.
