A costume?!!!! That thought alone made Bright Light come to a complete halt. Ponyfeathers, of course a party at the castle would require more than the day to day fur, but a masequerade, that’s got to be full on formal attire right. Plus a mask for it…..I think that’s what masquerade means anyway. Where am I gunna find those in time? Although the ball is at the castle, where they have loads of events, and Artemis is from the castle so maybe they’ll have a spare…poopy. While Bright Light had been lost in his thoughts Artemis had taken her leave back to the castle, leaving him to dwell on his predicament alone.

Prime, so I’ve got a big formal event coming up in shooting up in the air Bright Light turns to look at the clock adorning the weather facility. Four and half hours, it’s a costume party, and my one formal jacket is back home in Ponyville, which….I could probably make to and back from if I really pushed myself within that time, but with no time to get ready, and turning up smelling like a hydra from froggy bottom bog. Yeaahhhhh a great impression on our new friend, the protégé of the Princess. Not to mention the Princess herself. Nothing for it then, at least there’s no shortage or formal attire shops here. Let’s go see what Canterlot has to offer an awesome lightning catcher like me.

2 Hours 55 Minutes Later

Eurgh, what an afternoon. Stupid shops with their ‘oh we’re sorry sir, we don’t cater for those of your build’ excuses. You’d think everypony in Canterlot had the same body shape. Wouldn’t have this problem if Rarity had a shop here.

With a sigh Bright Light pushed his thoughts back to the positive side. Ah well, least good old M & S (Mares and Stallions) had something that fit. The Green stallion turned his head to look at the suit on his back which was a light blue in colour, and gently used the tip of his left wing to re-centre it on his back. Good old M & S, the poor man’s posh shop.

Trotting along to avoid his new suit getting wind swept Bright Light was making his way back through the fashion district to finish his ensemble. So now that I’ve got the suit I can head back to one of those fancy shops for eyewear, piece of ca.. DING DONG DING DONG DING DONG DING DONG DONG DONG DONG DONG DONG DONG. Huh didn’t realise it was Six O’clo....

‘OH BUCK IT’ Standing in the central square Bright Light watched in horror as all the shops in every direction suddenly slammed their doors as one and turned their ‘OPEN’ signs to ‘CLOSED’

Mouth agape in shock Bright Light quickly slapped his hoof to his cheek and forced a nervous smile on his face ‘Right Ok, no need to panic. Just need eyewear for a formal event starting in an Hour and a half’.

Scrunching his face up in concentration and tapping slightly on his skull in the hopes to speed up the process Bri willed his brain to start working in overdrive. Think, think think think think, come on, where can I find eyewear in time. Agh if only I had to wear glasses like Sweepy I bet he has a fancy pair for occasions just like these, though those would get in the way of my flight goggl…

‘YES that’s it’ Shooting up to the air in excitement the Pegasus had to do a quick 180 to catch his suit before it hit the ground from his abrupt take off, and then made his way full steam for the weather facility ‘My googles will be perfect for this’

‘OH, who am I kidding’ standing in front of the mirror Bright Light let out a dejected sigh. His flight goggles, though awesome when combined with his green fur, did not have quite the same effect when he was in a suit. Well it’s not like I bought them for High class events…heck did I even buy them Taking off the googles Bri gave them an intense look Hmmm maybe if I…

‘Hmmm, what are you still doing in here Bright Light?’ As the new voice entered the room Bright Light was pulled from his thoughts to see an Older Stallion entering the changing room

‘Hmm, oh hey Sweepy, you all done for the day?’ Bri casually acknowledged the new presence in the room splitting his concentration between the conversation and his predicament.

‘Almost, just making sure the facility is empty and clean for the night before I lock up. Good thing to considering I found you’ The elder stallions interest piqued when instead of the normal quip he would normally receive from the Pegasus all he got was a ‘hum’ of acknowledgment. Walking over and settling himself next to Bright Light, who had resumed staring at his goggles Sweepy gave him a prod ‘You o.k. sonny boy, didn’t break your favourite goggles did ya?’

‘Nah’ Looking towards Sweepy Bri managed a smile. ‘Just, you know that filly I met earlier?’ At Sweepy’s nod Bright Light continued ‘Well she invited me to this Masqerade ball tonight at the palace, as friends’ Bri swiftly prodded Sweepy to stop his assuming glance ‘and I spent all afternoon getting this suit and ran out of time to get the eyewear. Now I’m going to look like a dope’ Letting out a huff at the end of his sentence Bri returned his looking to his goggles willing them to change to match his suit.

‘Ah and the goggles don’t quite match huh’ at Bright Lights shake of his head Sweepy chuckled. ‘Well don’t stress too much, I’m sure they’ve got spare at the castle and if not…’Sweepy placed a hoof inside his pocket and pulled out a pair of glasses with a crackdown one lense ‘you can wear these. Just give me a, there we go’ pushing his hoof against the lenses Sweppy popped each one out. ‘You won’t be the most fashionable but at least it’ll be something right?’

‘Oh wow thanks Sweepy’ Taking the frame of the glasses Bri put them on and was surprised by the sophisticated stallion looking back from the mirror. ‘Well it’s not what I was going for but I certainly make it work. Boy am I lucky you had a broken pair of glasses on you’

‘Yeah, I always carry a spare, just in case a certain stallion isn’t looking where he’s flying and crashes into me’ At Bright Light’s blush Sweepy gave a chortle ‘Or maybe you planned it from this morning eh Bri?’

‘Eh, what?! NO, I…’ Bright Light’s explanation was cut off by Sweepy’s much louder laughter.

‘Just messing with ya sonny boy don’t worry about it. Thanks to my job here I get all the crystal lenses I need. Since they all go into the recycling with the jagged storage crystals they give me my new ones for free’ Sweepy added a wink at the end which caused Bright Light to sigh in relief knowing he hadn’t caused any financial destruction.

Picking up his cracked lenses Sweepy gave Bright Light a hoof on the shoulder and began heading toward the door ‘I’m going to finish closing up, hope ya have fun tonight Bri’ and with a wave he began toward the door.

‘Yeah night Sweeps, and thanks’

Just a shame I can’t add a bit more flair to these Bri thought to himself as he looked in the mirror. Can’t believe Sweepy’s glasses are made out of the same stuff to store lightning, I mean how awesome is that?! Imagine if…ooooo, hmm that would be really cool if..oooo that could work and then I could use… but what about…LE GASP, aww yeahhhh this is gunna be perfect..

‘SWEEPY!! HOLD THE DOOR!!’ and with that Bright Light shot down through the changing room and into the doorway where he promptly crashed into Sweepy who had been waiting for him.

1 hour 15 minutes later

Bright Light stood in the weather facility changing room admiring his new look. The Light Blue jacket, trousers and ruffled white shirt was certainly something he hadn’t envisioned himself wearing to day.

On a bench next to him was his master piece of the last hour. Having started with the frame of Sweepy’s old glasses he had then attached two lightning storage crystals pointing diagonally outward to the top of them, followed by two of the nevermelting snowflakes to the bottom part of the frames.

Ok time for the final part. Resting the glasses on one hoof Bright Light proceeded to remove the tip of the first crystal leaving a small opening. Taking a cable that was connected to a slightly larger storage crystal that was on the floor Bright Light placed the tip within the first glasses crystal. With that accomplished he placed the glasses down on the bench and tapped the backend of the larger crystal which caused the lightning within to jolt forward, along the cable and into the new storage crystal. Placing the cap back on (with his rubber glove to ensure no lightning burst out and tarnished his suit) Bri quickly repeated the process with the other crystal.

And that is how you personalise things. Picking up the glasses Bri gave them a little shake causing the lightning within the crystals to bounce of the sides and all around the container, making it look like a contained thunderstorm was within each of them. He then turned back to the mirror and placed them on his snout.

‘AWWW YEAH, now this is an all new form of awesomness’ Bright Light exclaimed with a massive grin on his face. Just wait till I show the weather ponies everywhere this, they’re going to be so jelly.

Looking at the clock on the changing room wall Bri’s smile only grew wider. OK, all set and with five minutes to spare. huzaah, I am totally going to be on time and in no way late what so ever just like always.

With that final thought in mind Bri bolted through the weather facility on his way to what was surely going to be a memorable night.
To say Bright Light was having an awesome day would be an understatement. The tour he had taken Artemis on had started out simple enough. They had dropped of the Lightning he had gathered during the storm in the generator room where he had been able to describe how from here it was transferred to Brighter Lights Corp (‘I know right, they must’ve heard of me and decided that’s how bright the world should be’) on the outskirts of Canterlot through the crystal caverns that ran underneath it, from where it was then distributed to Canterlot’s citizens.

After that they had wondered around aimlessly a bit. Not actually working in the weather factory meant that although Bright Light knew there were cool things there, didn’t necessarily mean he remembered where the cool things were. Thankfully they bumped into Sweepy (literally in Bri’s case), and after Bri had explained (and apologised, with a promise he wouldn’t fly over 5mph round the corners) Sweepy had passed on a map detailing the whole building in thorough detail. What had followed was amazing. Bright Light worked in the specialist field of Lightning afterall, so rarely needed to go see the other rooms, which as it turned out were all awesome in their own right.

‘I still can’t believe how they manage to manipulate that rain water into EVERY type of water vapour. It’s certainly improved since the last time I saw it’ Bright Light said with a chuckle.

They had come to a stop outside the Room of Four Seasons which, although didn’t serve any practical use, based on how the environment was pure magic, was certainly a sight to behold. ‘Good thing Sweepy had that map on him' he thought as he turned to look at Artemis. ‘I’d have hated to have let Artemis miss out on all this.’ He then proceeded to look back at the room before them. ‘They sure have improved this to. I remember when it would randomly switch from on season to the next without order’.

The memory bought a smile to his face, and he was about to share it with Artemis when she began thanking him. ‘I’m glad she enjoyed herself, though I wouldn’t say she’s in my debt considering I had just as much of a good time. The time’s just flown by. I sure hope we get to hang out again soo…

‘Let me make it up to you.’ Artemis continued ‘Join me tomorrow night for the Midsummer Moon Masque at the palace. It would be so nice to have a friend there. Please say you will come.”

‘A party, oh yeah I’m so..wait at the palace’ Bri thought ‘The only party I know off that’s held there is the Gala, which was sooooo boriiinngggg that one time, and with a name like the moon masquerade it sure sounds on the same level. Maybe I should just skip out.’

He was just about to say as much when another thought popped up. ‘Then again last time I had to spend most of it alone, with a friend it could be completely different, and I’ve had such a great time with her today there’s no chance I could be bored, even if it is like the Gala cause she’s awesome and we get along great. Not to mention I literally just thought ‘I hope it’s not long till we hang out again’ and here she is offering me the perfect opportunity. And besides, as her friend I now have a duty to ensure that if it is boring, Artemis doesn’t have to face it alone. So in conclusion we should definetley go to this thing, because fun will ensue one way or another.’

He chuckled at his last thought and then said ‘That sounds like a blast Arti, count me in.’ As he said it a smile broke out on his face. ‘Defo the right decision’ he thought.
‘Though I’ve never heard of the event before.’ He said as he bought his hoof to his jaw while he pondered. ‘Maybe I’ve just been flying in the wrong jetstream or something, but is it something new to celebrate Luna’s homecoming, or has it always been around?’
‘Boom, score another one for the smile police’ Bright Light thought to himself as he saw the affect his words had on Artemis. Seeing her relax and return to a calm posture caused him to break out a smile of his own. The tension he had unwittingly coursed disappeared in a moment. ‘good old pegasus intuition, always steers in the right direction’

Happy with the reaction his words had, and prideful that his instincts were right on the bit he kept smiling all through Artemis’ thanks, though they did cause him to wonder slightly

‘Thank you Bri, you don’t know how good it is to hear that’ Artemis said, with even more meaning than she had when he’d bought her in from the rain. The genuine happiness that Artemis said these words with surprised him. It was almost as though, to his hearing anyway, that he was the first to truly accept her. ‘That can’t be right’ he thought. ‘All those people up at the castle, she must have at least a couple of friends in the castle staff, and I’m sure she must’ve had some before she went there, she’s awesome to be around. Although’ he stretched his mind back, recalling what his friend said to him the other day ‘look at Twilight Sparkle. Big Mac said Applejack was one of her first friends, that she didn’t have any back here. What if Artemis is the same? Well guess I’ll find out later in this new friendship. For now she wants a tour of the weather bureau and she’ll get just that.'

‘Guess I do have my moments’ Bri said with a smile in response to her praise. ‘And you’re welcome, I’m just glad I managed to get the smile back on your face. Honestly it was as though I’d threatened to throw you back outside’ he said with a wink. ‘Although as we’re friends now I suppose I should mention, I’m not actually from here myself. I’m just a freelance catcher, which means they call me in whenever there’s a massive storm that they need collecting from. Should still be able to give you the scoop of this place though.’

As he said this he caught up with her and his mind began to go through all the different parts that made up the weather bureau and the best way to get to them, with the first stop being the Lightning Storage/transfer room. Then after that they could go get a better look at the weather control room, followed by cloud storage, and then the emergency response area. 'Perfect' Bri thought.'That covers all the cool stuff here. I doubt she’d want to see all the boring office buildings and more mundane tasks. Although' he cast a quick glance at Artemis, for all I know she might love that stuff, she did ask for the grand tour afterall, and they are part of the weather bureau. Not to mention some of the complaints in the wingers department are pretty hilarious.'

‘Hmm’ Bri pondered. He looked to Artemis at his side and asked ‘Do you want to go to the more borr…err I mean more managerial places on the tour, like where the complaints department is, or should I just keep to the cool stuff?’
