Name: Deborah 'Deb' Cohen
Age: 23, creeping up quickly on 24.
Gender: Identifies as female and presents as such the majority of the time.
Sexuality: Gay
Occupation: Store Clerk (Video Rental store), Zine writer and distributor
Apartment Description: Deb lives on the top floor of a so-and-so apartment building off Avenue B in Alphabet City, it has two bedrooms, the second of which is now free due to disagreements with her previous roommate.
Personality:A person has to have either a particular amount of charm, a hell of a lot of patience, or just a pair of long, beautiful legs to be able to become friends with Deb, and even then many people will write her off as difficult to deal with. Which, to be fair, she is.
Possessing a steely, almost solemn disposition, coupled with a preference to observe and judge rather than interact, Deb can easily present as very standoffish, and at gatherings can usually be found either outside having a smoke, or lurking on the fringe of the festivities, studying faces and hand gestures with a semi-detached interest over the rim of a glass of stoli. Nonetheless she performs quite well at her job, despite it being in customer service, and employs a much more involved interest and heartfelt dedication in her on-the-side work as a zine writer and distributor.
Though tough to get along with, once you're a friend of Deb, you're a friend of Deb, and she's known to be willing to go the extra mile for acquaintances in dire need of favours or, at the very least, a couch to sleep on and a smoke to bum.
History:Hailing from Cranston, Rhode Island, Deb was born to Jerzy and Marie Cohen, both children of Polish Jews that immigrated to the US following the closure of the camps after World War II. Descended from survivors of the war haunted by the memories of the camps proved a very delicate upbringing for Deb, as both sets of Grandparents lived with them, so she was taught from an early age how to step quietly around others so as not to provoke, maintaining peace for her family but not giving Deb herself much space to grow and express herself. It's largely because of this upbringing that Deb grew into the stern, reticent woman she is today, as well as why she's more inclined to observe quietly and attempt to read a person from a distance rather than through first-hand interaction.
Possessing a good head for numbers, Deb was expected to help run her parent's Grocery business after she graduated High School and, eventually, take over the business entirely and run it with her future Husband. However, Deb, who craved a change of scenery, better opportunity and freedom from the stifling atmosphere of her home, decided against her parent's plans and moved State, enrolling at NYU to study film.
Coming to New York City ended up saving Deb, giving her the air and space to come into her own, discovering the riot grrrl zine scene and exploring and solidifying her new-found sexuality. Deb fell in love with the city, hard, eventually dropping out of school in her second year so she could have more time to enjoy it, and to focus on zine work. And here she has remained since, going through life at her own particular pace, living each day as it comes and quietly relishing in the freedom she's been able to achieve, and would fiercely protect with every bitter, desperate ounce of her being.
