Changed it up! Does the brown that I use for Cedar's dialogue work for you, or should I brighten that up, too?
@Astarael42

Sure thing! I would be happy to change up the colors. Something brighter, coming right up! Let me know what you think when you see it.

And no worries about the delay! I totally understand.
Hazel watched the blanket rope lowered down. For a moment, she was about to shove Amos out of the way. Her nerves were getting to her. Her hands were shaking, though her breathing had managed to ease a little.

"Go on, Amos. I need to move the dresser so it can't get up with us as easily. Better I do it since I can keep the thing off of me with the eagle." She handed him to blankets.

"Unless... you've got an idea?" She asked hopefully. Now that Amos was awake, maybe he could take charge and she didn't need to do it.

"I sent Haley up there with the frying pan it hit you with, the crossbow, the quiver, the shotgun, a bag of supplies- oh, here's your rifle." She pulled it off of her shoulder and held it out to him. "It might need to be reloaded."
Hazel swore under her breath. In her haste, she had forgotten about him. Stupid! How could she do that? He was the one who knew what was going on.

"Hold on!" Hazel bent down and picked him up under her arms like she had before. She got his upper body onto the dresser, then his lower body. She was strong, but not strong enough to lift him totally on her own.

"Amos!" She shook him, hoping it would wake him up. "Amos! Come on, I need you to wake up!" Feeling like a monster, she patted his face lightly at first, then harder, and harder still, until she pulled her hand away flicked his broken nose hoping the pain would bring him back to the land of the living.

"Amos!"
Hazel raised her eyebrow at the dresser.

"Won't that just give it an easier way to us if we leave it there? I think I should stay down here and move it back so it can't reach the door so easily." She didn't want to be left alone downstairs. At all. She wanted SOMEONE down there with her, but it didn't make sense. They would just be a sitting duck, and she could at least keep it away from her. She didn't have the stamina to keep running after everyone.

"How about this!" She ran into the bedroom and grabbed all of the sheets and blankets off of the bed, and did the same in a few other bedrooms.

"Let's see if that blanket rope thing they do in the movies works. You get up there, tie all of this into a rope, and pull me up with it once I've got the dresser out of the way. Just do it fast."
Nancy finished her chips a little quicker than might have been ladylike. She didn't care. She crumpled the bag and tossed it into the trash can.

"Oh, I didn't realize. I thought guards had to go, too. I guess someone has to keep everyone in line while we're chatting away, huh?" She looked up at the clock.

"Oh, crap! The dinner prep has started. Gotta get down to the cafeteria. I need to go help them out down there." Thankfully, she didn't have to handle the dinner pill line. She only needed to get into the kitchen and help get food to the patients and make sure everything ran as smoothly and quickly as possible by getting plates and trays to the dishwashers. Technically that was the duty of the kitchen staff, but when they were going to be losing a bunch of the nurses and head guards to the meeting at 5, they needed all hands on deck. Dinner would still be served during the meeting, and the more that was done before their numbers were cut, the better. Honestly, it was self serving- if she helped out now, there wouldn't be so much of a "Charlie-Foxtrot" waiting for her in the morning. She went to stand by the door, reluctant to go out just yet. It had been nice to be off her feet for some of the afternoon.

"Are you working the dinner hour or is your shift over soon? Any wild and crazy plans for the night?" She knew very well there wasn't much to do on the island. The employee wing, where their rooms were, housed a few extra amenities that the patients didn't get, but not much. Nancy was glad she had brought her collection of movies and a laptop here when she moved. Otherwise, she would have been bored out of her skull. She wasn't much of a reader for recreation. Her books pretty much all consisted of medical textbooks from college, some medical books she got after college, and a few medical periodicals. If she was reading, it was for studying purposes. She enjoyed movies to get her mind off of things.

Dr. Brennan made her way in to the recreation room after checking in on the nurse handling the pharmacy for dinner- the new prescriptions weren't supposed to start until the morning. She stood in the doorway to the room, watching the patients inside playing board games or cards, reading some of the old magazines, and talking.

It was hard to keep the names and faces of so many patients straight. Add on the nurses, guards, orderlies, and kitchen staff, and most of the time she had to later on match the face to the records in her office. It was a necessary part of the work she did, though.

She wondered if Dr. Greene had reviewed the paperwork for any of the patients here yet. Some of them seemed quite promising. Dr. Brennan scribbled on her clipboard some notes about who to discuss with him later.
Hazel nearly jumped out of her skin when they heard the thump and the footsteps, whirling around and raising the gun she had- until she saw him. Someone was finally coming to help them. Hazel dropped the gun back to her side and returned her attention to the dresser.

Hazel agreed with Terrance immediately when he spoke.

"Yep." Was all she said. Her breath was still coming in, her chest and side burning. She had been in direct contact with the Tartok, and she was having a hard time not feeling angry at everyone else who had run. The scowl on her face communicated everything she was thinking.

"Come on!" Hazel wheezed at them. "Let's get this moved into place so we can get you guys up there." She had no intention of leaving Terrance down here. She had the eagle. If there was anyone who could deal with the Tartok attacking them, it would be her. Hazel gritted her teeth at the knowledge, wishing it had been someone else who could make the pendant work. She hauled at the dresser impatiently to punctuate her anxiety to get this over with, moving it a few inches.

"We'll handle James when we get up there. At least he didn't see what the Tartok did to her."
"If you don't mind me being so blunt, but why are we here? You bring us here and offer us things, but you neglect to actually say why exactly we were summoned. I don't think I'm the only one who got a little....I guess...gift in the mail. You wouldn't offer up information like that without a price." Nina flashed a smile at Ryker. They wanted answers, and she was ready to give them.

"Silent Wheel, Inc. wants to hire you for a series of assignments that would send you to desolate and abandoned places throughout the world. We have need of data and, in some cases, items to be found there. According to the contracts, you would be paid $150 a day for the first assignment, plus travel expenses. Half of the expected pay up front, and the other half when you complete the assignment. We expect this first assignment to take four days, but will consider the next two days as part of the assignment to total 6 days of pay. These next two days we expect you to spend getting your affairs in order for the trip. Any additional time this may take will be paid for when you return. On the second assignment, pay will go up to $225 per day. Upon the third assignment and every other after that, $300 per day." She stepped out from behind the bar and walked toward the mantle.

"There is very little we needed for the actual interview, which has been completed. You arrived on time, you are not showing outward disdain for each other, and you are all cautious about what it is you're experiencing at the moment. None of you noticed the griffin head mounted on the wall, but that is alright. We can train a better sense of observation into all of you." She indicated upward to the massive bird head mounted on the wall. It was large- large enough that it could fit the heads of two people in its beak. Cedar stared up at it, shocked she had missed it. Something seemed off about the bird head, beyond the size. The eyes, the shape of the neck... it definitely reminded Cedar of a cat of some kind.

But that could easily be manufactured.

"All equipment necessary for the assignment shall be provided by the company. All medical expenses will be taken care of by the company. Should you pass away or disappear during an assignment, Silent Wheel, Inc. will make a $10,000 donation to a charity of your choice, which we ask you indicate on page three." She took a leather briefcase out from under a long coffee table and produced a stack of papers- one for each of them- which she laid out on the coffee table with expensive pens set on top. She held several envelopes in her hands, thick ones. "Should you accept the assignments, you will leave today with these. They contain documents with details of the first assignment, and the $450 up front salary payment, in cash." Cedar's breath caught. She could really use that money.

"I realize this may seem odd. But do realize, we are willing to send you around the world, allow you access to things most humans will never see in their lives, challenge your perception of the very fabric of existence, and provide you with the comforts you currently do not possess- or will soon lose." She eyed Chronus as she said the last part of her statement. "Please do not take that as a threat, sweetheart. We are just aware of many details of the lives of Leyden City residents."

Cedar took a slow, constant drink from her cocktail until the glass was empty as Nina spoke. This was crazy. Was it crazy? This was crazy.

You're about to be homeless. You've not had a job interview in months. Can you afford to walk out? She thought to herself. And she knew she couldn't. She sighed.

"Is that why you sent me the camera lenses?" She asked, keeping a grip on the empty martini glass with her arms crossed protectively over her chest.

"Yes," Nina confirmed. "You were chosen specifically for your ability to document the locations we will be sending you to. You," she indicated to James, "Were chosen for your skills in nursing. You," to Chronus, "Were chosen for your skills in sound, music, and energies. You," to Ryker, "Are uncannily good at disappearing, a trait that best associates you with protection and hiding. We nearly didn't find you to deliver the letter. And you," She finally indicated to Sara, "Are so determined to survive that we trust you to be able to do whatever is necessary and make whatever choices you must- however difficult they may be- to make it back to us."

"Thanks." Nancy felt steady on her feet, but she needed to eat. Part of the earlier problem was taking the pills on an empty stomach. She walked to the cabinet in the infirmary where they kept bags of chips for anyone with low blood sugar or who needed to take pills with food, and grabbed two bags before walking back to Joshua.

"Other than the back issue, no. Today has been just fine. I mean, I couldn't find Dr. Greene when I needed him so I could sign some new employee forms, but that was only a little irritating. I'll see him at the meeting today." She held out the second bag of chips to him. "I think I must have twisted in my sleep or something. Any word on what the meeting tonight is about?"
Dr. Brennan nodded.

"Certainly. I'll let you get back to your work out. But please- do reconsider my offer."

She turned and walked down the hallway, flashing a final smile at Sasha as she left. Dr. Brennan wanted him to survive what she had planned for him. It was a distorted sort of concern, but concern nonetheless. She had marked him as hers and she was going to be sure what was hers knew that it was.

Nancy lifted her arm and looked at Josh.

"Hi Josh. Yeah, I kind of figured. It wouldn't have happened if I had kept my mouth shut. I hope Dr. Greene doesn't get on my case." Her back was starting to feel better. The muscles were mostly relaxed, and the dizziness that always accompanied the pain pills had subsided for the most part. Maybe it was time she got up.

Slowly, she rolled onto her side and propped herself up on her elbow, testing how her muscles felt. They felt... well, not great, but ok.

She finished sitting up. "If words already spreading around, I guess I'm in some hot water, huh? Could you help me off the bed?" She held her hands out to Josh with her question. "Standing up after these pills can sometimes lead to fights with gravity."
