@Kuroyomihime Is there a set date as to when we should have our CSes finished and up for review/waiting to be accepted?

Not really. I don't want to rush anyone to finish their characters within a fixed schedule.

However, I'll not be waiting for everyone forever as well. I'll have the IC open sometime this week or the next weekend, the most that can happen for anyone that takes to long is not being able to participate in the tournament.

Other than that, I'll take character sheets for evaluation whenever they come.
Ok, here it's, everyone: https://www.roleplayerguild.com/topics/173188-gun-burst-online/ooc

I hope you enjoy it.
Real World Character

Name: Kanna Kirishima

Age: 20 years

Gender: Female

Short Bio: Kanna's life wasn't that much different from that of most children of her age. The most unusual trait that could be noticed by others is that she inherited her great-grandfather's ingenuity. However, unlike the original founder of the Kirishima Heavy Industries, who lived during the time of the Great War, Kanna's creativity was focused mostly on the realm of computers and other electronic devices. However, this doesn't mean that her craftiness doesn't extend beyond that, she just likes to mess with computers more than other kinds of machines.

For this reason, it's no wonder that she has been deeply in synch with the online world and plays a number of video games, the most prominent of them being Gun Burst Online which she plays both for the thrills of it... many kinds of thrills.

In the near future, technological advancements have led to a sudden rise of Virtual Reality gaming. Thanks to the newest forms of brain-machine interface, for the first time ever, hardware available to the general public was able to reach a state total immersion where all of the player's senses got feedback from simulated realities within the game worlds.

For obvious reasons, this opened a new era of entertainment with online games benefiting the most out of it. Dated genres like MMORPGs had a massive comeback when people were finally able to become the character of their choice. However, as is expected of any gaming revolution, First Person Shooters would quickly rise to dominate the gaming scenery.

The biggest of these games, named Gun Burst Online, has a unique mix of Sci-Fi and real world elements as well as top notch graphics and a superb physics engine which is rumored to have been developed for military purposes. It is capable of emulating reality to an impressive degree while still keeping the subtle differences that make it a game to cater both to hardcore veterans and the most casual players alike. The best part is that Gun Burst is completely free, sustained by vivid microtransaction system as well as advertisement, which—they claim— plays a crucial place in simulating a dystopian world dominated by mega corporations.

Monetization schemes aside, no one can deny that when it comes to realistic, yet entertaining shooting games, there's not a single one that can surpass the giant that Gun Burst Online became. And it's in this world that your adventures will unfold.

In the year of 2025, virtual reality technology has finally reached a level that was previously only heard of in science fiction stories, bringing up the rise of a new era in entertainment.

The story of this RP will be about the players of the biggest virtual reality online game, Gun Burst Online, a massive, Sci-Fi FPS where the only limits for a player's character is their own creativity. And that's exactly the main setting of this RP. Ro be more precise, the story will deal with the events of the newest editions to Bullet Break, the biggest battle royale tournament in the world of Gun Burst Online. What drama and mystery could await in the future for those brave enough to join it either for fun or profit?

The world of Gun Burst Online is a post-apocalyptic, science fiction land dominated by threats of both the natural and artificial kind. The few remaining bastions of civilization exist as massive dystopian cities dominated by the power of money, while untamed wilderness and deserted badlands dominate everything else. Finally, ruins from a distant past dot the land, serving the same purpose as dungeons would in a fantasy game.

A world of dust and gunpowder, where only the strong have any hope of surviving. That's what Gun Burst Online is.

While the real world counterparts of the in-game characters will have little focus for most for the duration of the tournament, the RP will be based in Gun Burst's Japanese server. Thereby, all characters must either be from Japan or have an explanation about why they are playing in another region's server.

Real World Character

Name: Your character's name. You can also include common nicknames, online handles, titles (if your character happens to have something like that in the real world), and any other ways by which people would normally refer to them.

Age: While there are not much in the way of maximum age restrictions, please use some common sense here. However, no player character should be under the age of 14.

Gender: Your character's gender. Male or Female only, please, this isn't a question about sexual orientation.

Appearance: Your character's appearance. Either a picture (no real life photos, please), a short description, or both is enough.

Short Bio: A brief resume of your character's backstory. It doesn't need to be anything dramatic or special, just enough to give everyone an idea of who your character is. At least one paragraph of description would be appreciated.
Gun Burst Online Character

Name: The name of your character's Gun Burst Online character. Follow the same guidelines as above, except that you can include proper in-game titles here, if you want.

Gender: The gender of your character's Gun Burst Online character. Again, only Male or Female, however, it doesn't need to be the same as their Real World counterpart.

Appearance: The appearance of your character's Gun Burst Online character. Follow the same guidelines as their Real World halves.

Level: Unless you want to begin at a lower level, everyone can start the game at Level 90, the current level cap for Gun Burst Online player characters.

Specs: Your character's special abilities and perks, as well as Gun Burst Online's main progression system. Every character receives one at Level 01 plus one more when they reach Level 15 and every 15 levels after that, for a maximum total of 07 Specs (1, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90). If you are in doubt about whether or not an ability qualifies for this, please ask.

Signature Weapon/Combat Style: Include any weapons your character likes to use the most, or their most used weapons in case they don't favor any kind in particular, as well as their favorite combat style. You can be as descriptive as you want or not here. This is just to give everyone an idea about what your character specializes in.

Inventory: Your character's inventory, including any leftover in-game normal currency (Credits) and premium currency (Photonic Crystals). There are no explicit guidelines for how much of anything you are allowed to have, but a bit of common sense is advised.
Other

Sample Post: A small writing sample describing a part of your character's daily routine. It can be a significant event inside of Gun Burst Online or anything else that you feel like writing as long as it has to do with the RP. A minimum of two paragraphs, please.

Misc: Anything else that doesn't fit with the above categories like character themes (if you want to use them), bits of trivia you might find interesting, or anything else. If there's no additional information to describe, you can leave this field blank.

Gun Burst Online has a very simple, yet deep, character creation system. Humans are the only available race at character creation, and every player character shares the same set of basic attributes:
  • Strength (STR): Determines the character's carrying capability, ability to use certain weapons, damage of melee attacks and recoil reduction.
  • Agility (AGI): Determines the character's reaction time, evasive skills and movement speed.
  • Endurance (END): Determines the character's maximum hit points and stamina.
  • Perception (PER): Determines the range and precision of the character's sight and hearing.
  • Luck (LCK): Determines the quality and quantity of loot acquired from mobs and treasures.

At the 1st Level, all characters have a certain number of points that they can assign freely to these attributes. Whenever additional levels are acquired, players get extra points to assign as they wish or a general boost to all attributes at once.

Aside from this point-based progression, the other main options to customize a character are through skills, equipment, and the most distinctive of Gun Burst Online's progression systems, Specs. For the purposes of this story, only the later three matter. All of the other attributes and stats don't need to be included in the Character Sheets.

Some guidelines for the character creation process follow below:

Gun Burst Online offers a wide variety of equipment and weaponry that can be acquired through random drops, merchants or crafted by the players themselves. From leisure wear and protective gear to nearly any kind of weapon ever produced and some who have yet to be designed, Gun Burst has it all.

From a gameplay point of view, equipment is divided into a few broad categories and some sub-categories. The most prominent of which are exemplified below:
  • Combat Gear and Leisure Wear: Items that your character can dress up and or wear fall into this category. From t-shirts and jeans to bulletproof vests, exoskeletons, and everything in between.
  • Weapons: Gun Burst boasts one of the widest selections of firearms and other weaponry on gaming history. Pretty much any tool of killing ever devised is available for those who know where to search for them. There are even rumors about advanced science fiction weapons that can be acquired under special circumstances. For simplicity's sake, they are divided into a number of sub-categories:
    • Melee, Handguns, Sub-Machineguns, Shotguns, Assault Rifles, Rifles, Machineguns, Explosives, and Exotic
  • Consumables: Any type of item with limited uses like medkits, grenades, keycards, ammunition, etc. Usually, these make the literal bulk of any character's inventory. For the intent of this RP, you don't need to list every single item your character is carrying (especial ammunition), just make a note of the most important ones and apply some narrative sense while using anything that's not listed.
  • Other: Anything that doesn't fit with the categories above, like cosmetic items, drones, personal vehicles, personal housing, etc. Just as a side note, players are prohibited to bring anything that they can't carry to the tournament, this means that pretty much all kinds of vehicles are banned since anything as large as a motorcycle and beyond can't be stored in a player's inventory.

As long as it falls within these categories, pretty much any kind of item will be permitted for player characters. That said, advanced science fiction items (energy weapons, personal force field generators, power armor, etc.) are very rare in the game so the number of players who can own them will be very limited.

I reserve the right to ask a player to tweak or remove any piece of equipment that may be disruptive to the game, regardless of its power or functions.

Skills are optional character abilities that represent the players' aptitude with various non-combat related tasks as well as their aptitude with each main weapons group, except for Exotic weapons, which require a unique Skill mastery for each of them. While every Gun Burst Online character can try to do any in-game task, the rate of success and efficiency of such actions depend on the character's skill levels. Skills ranks range from 0 to 1000; the only way to raise them is through repeated usage, learning new and more complicated tasks with every new rank. However, real-world experience can speed up the skill-mastering process significantly.

For the purpose of this roleplay, all characters can begin the game with two maxed combat-related skills, plus 3000 skill points to assign freely between any other skills as they see fit. You don't need to assign all the points; in case you leave any unassigned points, you can just lump them all together as "Others" in the skill section. This means that your character has a wider range of usable skills but none of them will have an especially high ranking.

Some examples of skills include:
  • Weapon Skills, Martial Arts, First Aid, Stealth, Bladesmithing, Piloting, Gunsmithing, Salvaging, Mining, Fishing, etc.

There are also many rumors about Darks Skills, infamous, some even say illegal, Skills that aren't listed on a character's information page, even on external character databases. No one knows whether or not there's any truth to these stories but it doesn't forbid many players from pursuing them through any means necessary.

The most unique of all of Gun Burst Online's progression systems. Specs allow you to customize your character even further beyond what's permitted by Skills and Equipment, making sure that no two player characters will ever be equal to one another unless it's a conscious choice of their players.

Every character receives one at Level 01 plus one more when they reach Level 15 and every 15 levels after that, for a maximum total of 07 Specs (1, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90). Just like with Skills, the number of Specs available is staggering high, no one is aware of their exact number but many educated guesses estimate some 500 and 1500 unique Specs, most of which are yet to be discovered by the players. Some examples of Specs include: include:
  • Improved Speed: Improves your character's movement speed. Can be taken multiple times.
  • Improved Reflexes: Improves your character's reaction time. Can be taken multiple times.
  • Improved Strength: Improves your character's strength, allowing them to carry heavier loads, deal more damage with melee attacks and bows, etc. Can be taken multiple times.
  • Guts: Once every 24 hours, your character can survive one attack that would otherwise kill them, with 10% hit points regardless of how many they had before the attack. Can be taken multiple times, but it doesn't allow for more than one user within the same day. Instead, it'll increase the regained hit points by 10% for each extra time you select this spec.
  • Far Shot: The maximum range of your ranged attacks is improved. Can be taken multiple times.
  • Fast Aim: You can aim your attacks faster.
  • Standing Shot: You can shoot heavy weaponry (anti-materiel rifles, rocket launchers, etc.) while standing without any penalties to your accuracy.
  • Iron Fist: Improves the damage of your unarmed attacks. Can be taken multiple times.
  • Etc....

If you are in doubt about whether or not an ability qualifies for this, please ask.
I'm working on the main thread just as I'm posting this. Expect it to be ready soon, possibly even today. I just wanted to update everyone on what's going on behind the curtains.

@Kuroyomihime

Are all the weapons gun guns? Or will it be like SAO where there's some nifty energy weapons too?

There'll be energy-based weaponry as well, they'll be rare but also very powerful. For this reason, I don't want to see more than one or two players wielding any form of energy weapons.

When the main thread goes live, I'll give the final opinion on whether or not something works, but I can already say that no one ever heard about a PC wielding energy swords in the game before. There are going to be rumors that such a weapon exists, but they'll be more of an urban legend spread among the player-base than anything else.
@Kuroyomihime

How easy is it for someone in the game to tell the difference between a PC and an NPC?

Also, some games require a minimum level to get at more powerful level up perks to reward the players who put in enough game time to make it that far. Does Gun Burst have a system like that?

The same that happens in any other proper game, NPCs have different health and status bars to make it sure that people can tell the difference between them and other PCs. Also, while their AI is pretty advanced, they still behave in predictable patterns, it's easy for most players to tell them apart just because of this.

I'll answer questions about game mechanics in depth, after he main thread is live (hopefully later today). For the time being, I'll say that the answer is yes and no. While the game itself may have a system like this, it'll not be relevant for the purposes of the story, since everyone is going to begin at maximum level anyway.

I don't want this to be a story were we overthink (in-game) game mechanics. This isn't going to be tabletop style so there's no need for a hard set of rules, which generally are the lest interesting part of the game anyway. As long as Gun Burst doesn't feel like a poorly thought game from a IC point of view, it should be enough. The rest will be done in a narrative-based way.
Oh, it's good to see all this interest. Thank you all for that.

Well, in a week I'll be gone for the following week. If the RP can hold onto its enthusiasm for that long, then I'm sure a character can be crafted in that time.

Also, @Massasauga it's "Here" and not "hear"

No worries, I had some problems today so I wasn't able to get the main thread done, but I don't think that it'll be a problem if you join one or two weeks later. Especially since everyone will need time for preparations anyway.
