Yeah you'll never be the strongest in the setting. But you can get stronger, though right now it's middle of the road for what they are. Otherwise it breaks the whole "not sending the elite thing" which is the set up.

Also as I'm going to try to be posting more frequently and stuff after my work stabilizes want to make something to clear to everyone. As the initial thing said, no one is playing the Shima Elite the strongest members are still in Shima. Any current characters and future characters made are in the mid range of capability for their race and age. Barring special skills no one is capable of things that people outside of the most isolated fisherman haven't seen before. When the journey picks back up and they encounter foes more frequently just as many will be weaker than than as their are potential enemies stronger than them so it will often not be about just muscle. Since while any of the characters can beat up a random commoner other warriors are much more difficult to fight. Now while they can get better as the rp goes on to start I want to make clear how everyone is in regards to the setting. There will be times where the only way out will be to fight and kill people as well as times where our characters can really shine and do cool things. But want to make clear that this isn't intended to be an rp where people play the elites of the land that shape it through raw power, instead of their journey itself giving them chances to change history.
Metou is old so that is obvious.
But Jiang and Kenji are roughly as capable as warriors of their size and training would be at their current age, with some wiggle room of course. While specific match ups vary based on the skills involved, neither will be able to 1v1 one of the master samurai within the setting or will be capable of feats that are considered legendary of beyond anyone in a clan.
Outside of wearing tougher armor than most Neko, Tetsuya isn't any more capable than another one who dedicated his or her life to fighting. And Older Neko will generally be better than him barring specific skills that they wouldn't know, especially the ones without much human blood. As mentioned the armor is unusual so will better defend against many attacks but that isn't something innately him.
Gin and Yuudai are both half oni and as such are higher than average human warriors in raw might, but humans kill Oni all the time it just isn't easy. So neither of them are actually above high level human warriors. Warrior leaders like Ryuu Naji are stronger than them physically and better in martial arts and many human warriors are still above them. So while they are fearsome compared to most humans they still aren't something humans haven't seen or are unable to fight against. Compared to other Oni they are both small and will be noticeably weaker than Oni who have lived longer, especially as they would have constantly grown stronger via combat with their own kind. That isn't to say they can't kill an Oni in a fight, as I said humans manage to do it all the time; just that the average Oni of 25+ is going to be physically stronger than either of them as well as larger. So neither will have warriors thinking any different of them than the other Oni that they encounter just hanging around in terms of intimidation.
Also guards and warrior npcs in general aren't as a rule incompetent or useless. Unless they are stated to be so assume that they have the kind skillset needed to survive in the place they live in. The exact status of them will vary by clan but don't treat them as just some weak feebs to do whatever to or to constantly get over on. It's a rough and dangerous land and most are pretty capable in their own right.

Note on some things. Neko are rare in human run settlements with most living near populations of banekos or neko towns, humans can live a lifetime without meeting one. Oni have a huge population and while are rarely in towns almost every adult has encountered them, as their tribes often move near villages a few times a year.

Not much of a post but as mentioned having issues really having the energy and time to focus on posting when home. Should go back to normall schedule soon so will try to do more and such.
With that out of the way Takumi went straight to a guard in order to try to find this Neko, though mostly so Jiang would leave him alone and he could go do his own thing. He didn't want to hand out with the overly enthusiastic man for much longer so planned to speed things up as much as he could. Finding the nearest soldier he explained the situation and asked about a neko who fit the description and would have been with the princess. They couldn't tell his exact location but did point to where they last saw him, a lead that Takumi quickly took hoping it would lead him to some more accurate guards. Finding a guard in the area they pointed to the inn that the neko was last seen at, the guards hoping the Shima clan would solve their own infighting instead of dragging Ru into whatever problems were going on. Takumi led Jiang to the inn while doing his best to avoid talking to the guy, stopping as soon as they arrived outside of it. "There, this is the place. I'm not part of Shima so I'll let you handle the issue yourself. I'm going to go gather some information that could prove useful later, maybe find out a good place for you guys to go after this." Takumi hoped that this would be the last he saw of Jiang that night, leaving him a sense of peace for a while.

Some of them wore emblems of their clans for all to see, but since it was neutral ground most didn't expect to get into fights over it. One person stood out much more than all the others however, a woman with weird devices adorning her body who was sitting over near one of the corners. She had a guitar of sorts, an instrument not normally seen within baji, and was sitting on top of a mechanical device that was clearly beyond the normal tech of their island. She wasn't playing any music but had her instrument out and ready as if she had just finished or was getting ready to start again. While a few others had things that could be classified as foreign, this woman was the one who most accurately fit the info that they had been given. She wasn't expected anyone so wouldn't notice them if they approached her, her eyes focused on her own instrument and occasionally on people who wanted to ask her about it or if she was going to do another show for them.

Takumi didn't know much about Lady Ru personally but as he headed to find some people to question he answered with what he knew. "Like I said she mostly known for being a warrior and not really having interest in proper bajin custom. Can't tell you too much about her personality beyond that, but her beauty is well known. You often hear about people coming to try to marry her, mostly warriors who feel they deserve their own clan and want it through her." More than a few men from his island had attempted to do that, all to return in failure like those before them. Jiang's next question made him chuckle a little, before he went ahead and gave him the bad news. "Most clan leaders are men, so if you want some beautiful men there are a few of them. But even then most of them are old men at that. Very few female leaders are around, and those that do exist are mostly just temporary until a a son or bother returns home or in some cases until a grandson becomes of age." He doubted they would encounter any female clan leaders outside of Ru for a very long time, if at all.

Many of the traveling trader were still around though, trying to sell their merchandise to the Naji soldiers as well as people of Ru who were still out and about. While there was no immediate sign of the musician they were looking for, many merchants and traders saw the two were clearly outsiders and began trying to get their attention. Not many traditional Ru food and good were being offered to them, but plenty of foreign objects and snacks were being waved around in Gin's face with various types of makeup and clothing pushed to Metou. They had nothing to do until they set out for the morning, so they just offered stuff to anyway who may not have seen or might possibly have a decent amount of money. None of them had the instrument in question but if any of them were asked about the woman, they would be able to point the duo in the direction of the right inn.
