@Drakey Nice! It seems like you'd definitely like to join, so... would it be cool if I just PMed you the OOC so you can have a head start in creating a full CS? It's pretty long and about 90% complete, but it should give you enough info to get you started.

I do plan on posting the OOC tomorrow or the day after if you'd rather wait.
@Drakey Cool! If there's one suggestion I would make here, is that Varya is inspired by the Russian Empire, so characters who are Varyan in origin should Slavic-sounding names (i.e Mikhail, Sasha, Vitaly, ect). Varya itself doesn't have knights either (another nation on the continent does have them though), as Varya leans more toward the pure militaristic side of things, so your character's benefactor would have a military rank before their name. Also, as all of us will be high-ranking war priests, we'd have the title of "Father" or "Mother" before our names. Just some food for thought :p
@Drakey That's a neat idea for a character! I like the magical mechanic angle you're going with. Looking forward to seeing what you do with the info in the OOC to further flesh him out. :)
@BingTheWing Yes, but with a twist. I’d say it’s more magical gunpowder. The idea is that this magical ice age has made the concept of “fire” nonexistent, so people use “ether”, a divine quintessence, as fuel to power everything from urban infrastructure to weapons to magic spells, etc.
Hello!

I am planning on restarting an old RP I used to run on this forum many years back (before the site blew up) and would be curious if anyone is interested in taking part.

Before I get into specifics I just want to tell you guys a bit about how I run my RPs. Basically, I am all about collaboration when it comes to world building and character relationships, so I always encourage my players to not be shy about introducing ideas and NPCs of their own. The world of The Last Embers is pretty well planned-out already, but there is certainly still a lot of space in the margins for players to introduce their own ideas if they want. Anyway, on to the RP itself!

***

The Last Embers takes place in a dark steampunk world (just like the description says!) that has been frozen in a magical ice age for untold eons. Seeking shelter from the unnatural cold, people in this world live within massive steam cities that exist under the thrall and protection of living gods, who walk among humanity and rule over their flock like kings. These gods are all-powerful and are in constant war with one another, with their faithful adherents doing the fighting for them. Their worshipers wage war for them without scruple or complaint, for in the minds and hearts of the people, they owe their existence and survival to the gods themselves.

The story begins on the western continent, where the god-king Varya rules over the titanic steam city of Magnagrad. For the past two hundred years, the Varyan Empire, a monstrous nation of blood, iron and blackened snow, has conquered the entire continent, imprisoning the gods of rival kingdoms and assimilating their flock into Varyan society. Having the entirety of the western continent conquered, Lord Varya now turns his armies to the east, where across the frozen oceans lies the mythical continent of El, unseen and untouched by western eyes.

We will be playing as a group of young Varyan inquisitors, or war priests, who've been sent on a missionary expedition to the mysterious continent of El, where they are to learn of the Gods who are worshiped there and if possible, convert the natives to the light of Varya.

Our characters, a group of recently ordained inquisitors, are powerful but inexperienced. They are barely out of their teens and are being given command of two powerful steam arks as well as a large force of common soldiers and support personnel to aid them on their mission.

Our group have known each other since childhood, and have bled and endured together through their years at the Red Seminary, the holy academy where the inquisitors of the Varyan Empire are trained.

Through their years together, they have formed bonds and rivalries. Some of you may see each other as trusted friends, hated enemies, or even lovers. Nothing is off limits.

Our characters are going to be priests, but they can have whatever kind of background and personality you want. They can come from noble houses, lived as orphans, former slaves, ect. They could be anything from mad zealots who would kill for their gods without question to conflicted individuals quietly wrestling with their faith. Remember, these will be young adults, so just because they're priests doesn't mean that they have to conform to what you typically think priests are like. They're human beings first, and should have their own specific character quirks.

The story shall start on the eve of the night before our mission, where our characters will be waiting eagerly in the capital of Varya for their expedition to start.

I think that should be enough of a summary for what the RP will be about. I will of course post more info in the OOC, but in the meanwhile, if you have any questions about the world, your characters, tech, magic, or what have you, feel free to ask me here. Thanks for reading!
Well, hey everyone.

I'm truly sorry there hasn't been an update in so long but stuff has been unbelievably stressful on my end for the past few months. To be 100% honest I was in a really shitty place and wasn't sure whether I'd have it in me to get back to this, but luckily things are looking a lot brighter. I managed to find a job (outside of my field) which I'm really passionate about and which will keep me from having to move back in with my parents. I intend to pick this up sometime within the next month or so. The plan is to create an out-of-forum tumblr or something where we can keep all of the world information, since the guild still has that dumb text-limit issue that's making it really annoying to run huge RPs with lots of world building (like this one).

I also intend to open up the RP to more people. I know we've already done this a few times and it's really annoying, but it's the only way that we can have more people join us, as this thread is kind of dead already.

Once again, I'm sorry about the lack of updates. I understand if you guys won't want to continue with me being such a crappy GM, but I really hope those of you who've been cool enough to stick around continue to do so. After all, our characters still have a bunch of unfinished business left to finish. :p
Hey guys. Just a quick update.

Job hunt's still ongoing. I've been through this before. It sucked back then and it sucks now. Don't know how many hospitals/clinics/specialist centers I've applied to and haven't heard back from. My fiancé and I are considering postponing our wedding, which sucks since we already had to resort to that once. :(

So yeah, RP is still on hiatus. Hopefully a short one.

How are you guys doing?
Sigh. Once again, I must apologize for my absence. I've had very little time to myself lately since I've been busy looking for a new job. I don't want to say when this will pick back up again, but I will make a point in reassuring you guys that it is NOT CANCELLED. I just don't have a lot of time to dedicate to this right now. Sorry, everyone.. I'm dying to get this thing started but it's been kind of difficult with how my personal life is going at the moment. Hopefully I'll be able to return to RPing soon.
Oh and Archangel, yes, you're accepted. Right now I'm just finishing up on some big information entries that will help fill out the world a bit more, as there are kind of blank gaps in the world that no one really knows much about. Once I get that done, as well as post a few profiles for the super-important secondary characters, we'll begin. I think in the meanwhile we can get started on our relationships,
Yo guys, Managed to finish off one of my character profiles. I'll try have the rest up sometime tomorrow, along with some more info. I'm still jobless, but I do have an interview next week for an administrative position, so that's cool. :p

Zoya Kiriyev

Age: 41
Race: Muraadan (assimilated Varyan)

Zoya Kiriyev is a commander in the Varyan military. Thirteen years ago, she served with distinction in the Lanostran War and was granted leave to return to civilian life at the war's conclusion. However, as the empire readies itself for another invasion, Zoya has been summoned to rejoin the military forces and resume her post as a commander within Lord Varya's armada. Leaving behind her family and the comfortable civilian life she won for herself through her heroism in the war, Zoya has been tasked by the Church with leading the military forces supporting the First Elurian Inquisition during their journey through the eastern continent.

Many Varyan soldiers lost their lives during the attrition campaign against Lanostre-- so costly was the struggle for the empire that for every Lanostran killed in that conflict, three Varyans perished. Though the empire held a clear advantage in numbers, the soldiers of Lanostre were far and beyond the more potent fighters. Thus the narrative of the war was written-- the young soldiers sent out to the warfront rarely returned, and so their loved ones waiting back home congregated in their churches, and prayed for miracles.

For many of the soldiers who served alongside Commander Zoya Kiriyev, she was that miracle.

Having joined the empire's youth corps at the young age of eleven, Zoya has had a long and brutal career as a frontline soldier and commander-- one that she was all too eager to leave behind at the war's conclusion. Celebrated for her bravery and brilliant tactical mind, she quickly rose through the ranks of the Varyan secular army and upon the completion of her officer's training, was immediately shipped off to the Lanostran subcontinent. Once there, she was given command of a small company and went on to distinguish herself by leading her band of soldiers to victory after victory. More impressive than her successes on the battlefield was Kiriyev's obsessive MO to not allow anyone in her brigade to fall in the line of duty. She was a supremely cautious and defensive-minded leader, with a craft for subterfuge and guerilla warfare that many of her fellow officers did not share. During her first year in Lanostre, Kiriyev's company lost only seventeen soldiers-- most of the casualties falling to Lanostran inquisitors.

Zoya Kiriyev's reputation as a leader who would fight tooth and nail for the survival of those under her command, sometimes to the ire of her commanding officers, spread throughout the ranks of the conscripted men and women of the military, and thus she began to be hailed as a "hero" among the lower ranks of the invasion force. This did not sit well with the inquisitors who led the invasion, as most of the Church's warriors believed the conscripts to be little more than cannon fodder, only there to distract the secular Lanostran armies while Lord Varya's true work was being done-- the capturing of the goddess Lanostre herself.

As the war continued and the battles grew ever more fierce, Kiriyev's determination to lead her soldiers home never wavered. Four years later, when the Goddess Lanostre surrendered to Lord Varya personally, her greatest wish was finally answered and she and the rest of the men and women who had long served under her were allowed to return home. Most of the soldiers who served in Lanostre now occupy high-ranking posts within the secular army-- Kiriyev however, asked to be discharged from her office, and after her superiors failed to convince her to stay, they granted the commander her freedom. She went on to marry a T'saeren engineer and started a family.

For the past thirteen years since the war's end, Zoya has not so even as touched a rifle, nor has she stayed in contact with her old comrades in the military. She has lived a placid life with her husband and young boy, far away from the public eye. Her idyllic peace came to a sudden end when Father Valentin, a high-ranking priest within the Church, called for her to return to her post in order to serve a newly ordained class of Inquisitors as they journey throughout El.

Though she fears the very real possibility that she might not return from this journey, Zoya has not wilted in her years as a civilian. She has resigned herself to the task given to her. Commander Kiriyev will serve these priests as faithfully as she served the men and women under her command, she will guide them safely through the frozen wastes, and Varya help her, she will fight for them until the day she returns home.
