Brief History: Yuliana’s father Aeolf brought the hard-won peace to the land with blood and sweat. His wife Vrigga fought at his side for much of the war, joining the final battle for unification while carrying Yuliana. Once the land was brought under a single banner, Aeolf became King and ruled for twenty-six years, dying in a border skirmish with brigands weeks before the call of the Gods. While he had no sons, he had many great warriors who prepared to vie for his seat; Yuliana, with Vrigga’s support, put herself forward.
Many of the warriors gathered to honor Aeolf and fight for kingship scoffed at her claim; she was not known to be a fighter and had rarely been seen in public. In fact, most of the Huscarls and Jarls of the area had no idea what she looked like. There was much speculation—most of it negative (comparing her to her mother, Vrigga, who had grown broad with age)—but it was idle talk. When the time came for the new King to be chosen, the Jarls and Huscarls with aspirations to the throne gathered to do battle. Whoever was strongest would take the seat. All carried their weapons; there would be no quarter for losers. The grand melee was about to begin when a tall, dark-haired warrior strode into the field, a six-foot-long battleaxe in hand. The warrior, the stunned men soon discovered, was a green-eyed woman already smeared with blood. She had head-butted the guard at the entrance when he had questioned her intentions. She was Yuliana, daughter of their King, and as she approached the horn signaling the start of the melee sounded. Without breaking step, she beheaded a Jarl.
The melee lasted fifteen blood-soaked minutes, and at the end three Jarls and five Huscarls had been killed. The remainders were grossly wounded or unconscious—with the exception of Yuliana, who, while spattered with gore, was on her feet and searching for a new foe. Her chestplate was scored, her arm gashed, and her nose was broken. Her battleaxe was dripping. It was in this way that Yuliana Aeolfsdottir became Queen Yuliana, the Bloody Maiden.
Despite her extreme youth, Yuliana began learning the responsibilities of her new office, given advice and guidance by the ever-present Vrigga. When the summons from Baldr came, Yuliana immediately prepared for battle and marched her men towards the border to meet the other lords. She rode at the fore, and, when the time to fight came, she would be on the front lines, come death or doom.
