They did indeed avoid it. Spain was in a very delicate place at the time I believe, they couldn't really afford to get involved.

Any recommendations for a nation that isn't very essential?I have college and things are pretty busy, so I don't want to bother anyone if I take long to post.

I think Greece during this time period could be really interesting, they always had the potential of going either way in the war or simply just not getting involved at all.
