“Did you see the new girl?”
“Yeah. Fuck, she looks about 12.”
“Word is that she can...y’know…get things.”
“Well that was ominous.”
“Shut up, Saiko, it was for dramatic affect. Anyways, people have been saying she can get documents without a warrant. You know, credit card statements, medical history, text messages, that sort of thing.”
“...Isn’t that illegal?”
“I don’t know why I even talk to you.” Bio: Nori was born to Emily and Forest Haywood, a pair of wheat farmers in the middle of nowhere. Growing up the young family never had a lot, but there was food on the table and the little girl always felt safe and loved. Nori adored farm life and all the things that came along with it like chasing chickens, catching frogs, or splashing about in the creek bed. But her favorite thing by far was when her father would take her out into the pasture for target practice.
Nori was far from a natural shot. It frustrated her to no end how no matter how steady her breathing or how carefully she peered down the barrel of the pistol, her aim was always comically off. The young girl worked at it day in and day out, but she never seemed to get any better. Then one day her dad brought out his old .22 bolt action rifle. “Let’s give this one a try, hm?” he hummed, carefully pressing the worn firearm into her grip. Nori planted her feet, took aim at the coffee can, exhaled, and squeezed the trigger.
Bam!Bull’s eye.
“That’s my girl,” Forest told her, dropping a kiss into her hair, “I knew you’d get it. You just needed something with a longer barrel. Helps make it feel more like an extension of your arm, or some shit like that. Now come on, little lady, supper’s waitin’.”
She graduates high school and moves in with her childhood sweetheart in the nearby city of Fair Grove. He’s a nice boy with blue eyes and a sweet smile, but his best friend is, well, a little out there. She comes from big money and is a bit of a diva, always demanding that Nori’s boyfriend spend more and more time with her, but the blonde has never been the jealous type, so she lets it slide.
She ends up spending a lot of time at the heiress’ mansion, hanging out with her bodyguards while waiting for her boyfriend to finish up so they can go home. It’s actually not all bad, one of the help even starts to teach her how to break into online databases. They make a game out of it and sometimes spend hours trying to see who can access confidential information the fastest.
A month after she turns twenty three, her boyfriend asks her to move out. His best friend had finally convinced him that he should be with someone of better breeding and sets him up with the daughter of an American oil tycoon.
Nori moves out. She does not date again.
She decides to make a change and quits her job at the local flower shop so she can join the police academy. It’s grueling, but it helps keep her mind off things. She graduates and takes the exams to become a fully fledged officer and aces everything except…
...she fails her pistol marksmanship test by three shots.
“I don’t understand,” the grizzly police chief grumbles as he looks down at the files in front of him. “She didn’t miss a single shot with the rifle.”
After a moment of hesitation he makes an executive decision and pencils in three more points before calling Nori to give her the good news. She works in the small department for three years, mostly dealing with drug and domestic abuse cases. Eventually she finds out there is a position opening up in Shine City and she transfers, hoping she can make a bigger difference in a larger city.
