After the riot

Alice needed a drink, tonight had been hard, people had been angry, upset, afraid. People who were afraid did stupid things. Tonight that stupid thing had been to riot, to listen to a man who didn’t really care for their wellbeing. They’d been exposed to a powerful metahuman, and it had destabilised a situation that was already heading south. She knew that keeping the peace was RAVENs primary mission, but last night had felt like they were simply putting down resistance. They were well trained, well-equipped, the metahumans rioting hadn’t stood a chance. It had felt wrong.

Things had gone efficiently back at HQ, those who needed to be processed were, and Alice had spent more than an hour filling out forms, signing her name and making her report. It had only unsettled her even more. Alice prayed every day, but after it all she’d found herself in the locker room staring into space. Her Rosary had been clutched in one hand, her lips moving soundlessly as she moved the beads between her fingers. Some of those people had a right to be angry, and they’d crushed it anyway, it would only make things worse she knew. They’d failed in what they’d gone to do.

She carefully placed the holy symbol back in her purse before changing out of her RAVEN uniform.

She stared at it hung in the locker for a moment, wondering just where this job was going. She’d become a cop to protect and serve, it was naïve, but she’d wanted to help people, and hadn’t really known where else to do that except in New York’s finest. She’d been raised a cop, and she’d graduated from the Police Academy at the top of her class, with a glowing review. She’d never expected to end up in RAVEN, but after that terrifying moment when he’d pulled the knife across her throat she hadn’t thought there was anywhere else she should go.

People like her, people with amazing abilities had a responsibility. God had granted her powers so that she could do more, she’d believed that he had a greater plan for her, but over the last few months that belief was being eroded. Now she only hoped that there was a plan. He had to be testing her, testing her faith.

That’s what the father had said in confession this morning. Doubt was human, but that true faith was about overcoming that doubt. Alice was faithful, it was what had kept her going. God set test for her, and because she was human, sometimes she failed. She never stopped trying though, and tomorrow was a new day, but for now, she wanted to drink away today.

Somewhere beneath the façade is a young girl who is very out of her depth, but is determined to make the best of it now. She is frightened and lonely, but more afraid of letting others know that is how she feels than she is of the feelings themselves. Caring, she’ll take in strays when they wander by, for a while at least, until she remembers the person she is supposed to be. To sum it up, Seraphine is a good person who is trying really hard to be a bitch, and one day, she just might succeed.

Her father was proud of his heritage, and refused to blend in with the circles he now moved among, still wearing old battered jeans and helping the hands on the ancestral family ranch. Sophie hated it, hated being looked down on and bullied by her fellow students at her private school, at home she had to carry out chores on the ranch, which would have been fine if it didn’t include mucking out the horses and throwing hay, giving her a more chunky and masculine physique than most teenage girls are comfortable with, particularly amongst peers who are spoiled rotten by their families from birth, not raised in a working household. She always wanted to escape that life, to be something more.

When her powers manifested things only became more complicated, they changed for the worse. Though it came with advantages, people were frightened of metahumans, and Sophie became even more ostracised than she already was, even her father, who had always been an honest, hard-working man, was ashamed of his daughter’s freakish nature. His daughter, his hard-working, honest daughter, was registered with nest, chipped, tagged, and suddenly an embarrassment.

Sophie ran away at fifteen, she stole a little money from her father and left town, left the county, the state. She changed her name, acquired a whole new identity, and set about transforming her life. Anyone else might have struggled, even most metahumans would have struggled in that position, but Seraphine’s ability gave her the unique ability to be in two places, or more, at once.

A year spent working long hours every day helped her lose the puppy fat, and a lack of proper nutrition ensured that her once chunky physique slimmed down a little more rapidly than was really healthy. It didn’t take long though, before she realised the power her new appearance gave her. She was lucky enough to have matured rapidly, and at sixteen, she looked old enough to be within the consenting age, but was ruthless enough to take advantage of the fact that she wasn’t, and extorted money from the men foolish enough to fall for her feminine wiles. Of course, it eventually meant she had to move on, and before long she found herself attracting the attentions of the White Spider Society. Attractive, and clearly already in the habit of using her sex and beauty to take advantage of men, she was picked up by a low level brothel swiftly, and put to work in the Society’s thriving sex industry.

This power is the secret to Seraphine’s many talents and vast experiences. Each clone, though tethered to the Prime, is capable of living an independent life, of learning and acquiring skills. Though there is no telepathic link between the Prime and the clone, upon reabsorption Seraphine Prime can absorb all of their memories, knowledge and skills. Though Seraphine can produce a number of clones, she is limited to a maximum of twelve, and she maintains three in areas around the country, including two in University, limiting her to being able to produce nine clones in her immediate vicinity.

Weaknesses/Drawbacks:

Reabsorbing a clone can have some adverse effects for some time after the fact. These can include personality defects, wild mood swings and occasional periods of exhaustion. These effects are magnified the longer the clone has been independent, a few weeks has little to no effect, while a few months or even years can have a much more difficult effect.

Though the clones can operate independently while Seraphine sleeps, forced unconsciousness for the Prime, through drugs or trauma, will force unconsciousness across the entire network, and trauma applied to them can be felt by the Prime, though she cannot use it to locate her clone, merely to experience (unwillingly) the pain the duplicate is experiencing. This empathy even extends to death, the clones can die, and they will experience death in exactly the same way as any other, and the reverberation of that experience can cause incredible psychological pain for Seraphine Prime. She will in effect experience death herself, without having to die.

@Mr Allen J - Just poking my head in, though I has feeling I might not fit the role-play too much... however I do love superheroes. The reason why I don't seem confident is because I normally play lesbians... and obviously that's not an issue in of itself, who cares, right? The issue is usually when I'm looking for some kind of romance option for my characters. It's pretty rare to find them when you don't play bisexual/hetrosexual women, from my experience - in group role-plays anyways. Also, even though it says slice of life, it doesn't mean it's very focused on romance... anyways, let me know how right or wrong I am. =3
