Hey Lopez, you know this lady? It's taboo to talk about her in the office, but I need to talk to someone about her. I just found out about her, and I was so interested I tracked her down. We talked, briefly, before she vaguely threatened my life and disconnected. Can't believe the Boss keeps this a secret from us! And I can't believe I never knew about it!
Her Name is Manuela Garcia de la Rosa.
I'd say she's in her late 30's. Can never tell with an elf, though.
Here's a pic I snapped from our convoDoesn't really do her justice though. The chick has a wild air about her. Almost an aura. Like she's uncomfortable with people and would fit in better in a forest. Or a zoo. She's short, for an Elf, and kind of stocky too. Unsurprisingly, it doesn't look like she has -any- modifications at all. Looks like nobody has altered her since the day she was born. No makeup, either, and her hair usually looks like it hasn't been combed (ever). She never wears anything special. Lots of green, brown and beige. She thinks that fits her "persona", I'm guessing.
Another thing about her... I don't know how to describe it... she's, calming, I guess. There's this look in her eyes... like she understands you... can connect with you on every level. It's soothing, but unsettling if you actually think about it. My skin itches when she looks at me, to be honest.
She uses magic like it's nothing, of course. Specifically (get this), she uses her magic to control animals. She calls herself a "Faunamancer". It's a made up word, I checked.
Her life, apparently, has been pretty interesting. She was born into old money, you could have guessed. She was trained by her family to be a powerful magician, but she never identified with them. In fact, she ran away from her mega mansion over ten times! The parents had to eventually hire a guard specifically to follow Manuela around and keep her in line. She eventually convinced her mother to buy an animal reserve. Apparently that was the price for her to not run away. It was there that Manuela bonded with animals so deeply. She'd seem to know their needs and desires, and they seemed to do whatever she asked them to do. In fact, they seemed to gain intelligence when Manuela was around - they could accomplish complicated tasks for her. This apparently worked even better on awakened animals and other beasts that connected with magic, like her.
Manuela agreed to be educated and trained by her parents all the way until after college, where she majored in Parabiology, the study of paranormal and magic beings. She was never interested in anything but magical animals to interact with. Her family tried to force her into the business, but she rejected them every time. Things eventually grew more and more tense between them until Manuela's father had the bright idea of forcefully sending her to a military camp for discipline and training, hoping to beat the rebellious, 'hippie' side out of her. Well, apparently the military had a guard dog on camp. An awakened dog, the size of a horse with freaking tusks. Two nights into the camp, the dog went berserk and attacked the guards on duty. One of the men lost a leg, and the other lost three fingers. Manuela escaped that night, and returned to her animal reserve. Her father confronted her, and he ended up in the hospital. Nobody knows what happened, but he's
still on life support. He may never recover.
Now normally you'd be locked up and the key would be thrown away right then and there, but when your mother is Flavia de la Rosa, CEO of Aztechnology, what are you gonna do? Flavia loved her kids, and she was always had a giant soft spot for Manuela. Some sort of "truce" was brokered, where Manuela was allowed to keep her animal reserve as long as she didn't "act out" again. In order to avoid causing a scene, Manuela left her home and explored the world as a paranaturalist, studying awakened and magical creatures. On her mother's dime, Manuela had more and more exotic and magical animals imported from around the world. Her "animal reserve" had become more of a freak show for fantastical creatures. Manuela stubbornly continued to import creatures, but she never really took care of how many she could manage. One animal in particular, her Basilisk, was apparently very strong willed. It would break out of the reserve every once and a while and harass the nearby town. One day, it petrified three schoolchildren and ate two more. Enraged, a group of townspeople went to the reserve and demanded the Basilisk be killed. Instead, the Basilisk, and other creatures, thought they were attacking Manuela, and killed them all. In response, a mob was formed and marched on Manuela's reserve. They set fire to the grounds, killing many animals and setting even more loose in the countryside. Manuela was forced to flee to her mother for help, but the Basilisk's attacks combined with the escaped creatures ravaging the surrounding areas created a public relations nightmare for Aztech. It cost millions to repair everything that Manuela had caused, and even Flavia had had enough of it. She told Manuela to leave and never come back. Even today, it's virtually unknown that Mrs. de la Rosa has a daughter, and the animal reserve has been erased from every record; all victims of the Basilisk attacks were paid for their silence. Manuela was essentially erased from existence.
That was around a decade ago, and the happier, hippie side of Manuela died with her mother's protection. Manuela fled to America and became an Eco-Terrorist, fighting to release mystical animals from captivity. When she freed them, she'd usually take them on and train them to be her 'pets', also trained to attack her enemies. She operated alone for most of this time, and only in the past year or two has she taken to working with others. She took out a contract to be a Shadowrunner a few months ago. That was when I talked to her, and I haven't heard from her since.
She's an impressive woman, but I'm not sure about her mental state. Her dedication to animals' rights is admirable, but she seems to value them over humanity. I'd have to guess there is something going on there, under the surface, that provides such a meaningful relationship... she mentioned something about the Astral Plane when I asked, but didn't elaborate. She is naturally rebellious, and she won't hesitate to try and destabilize a power structure she deigns corrupt or abusive. Like I mentioned, she has some sort of empathetic aura about her that extends even to us humans. Hell, maybe I'm wrong about everything I said. Maybe Manuela understands humanity better than any of us, and that's why she prefers animals. Some days, I feel the same. Wow, imagine understanding human kind so well you stop relating to them? Is that what Manuela experienced? Depressing to think about.
Anyway, Lopez, I've probably taken up way too much of your time. I just needed to vent about this girl. I love a good mystery, especially if it has hints of conspiracy. Remember to delete this message after you read it.
