@All First Year Students!
Headmaster Ozpin and Glynda Goodwitch - Beacon Academy - Mid Day
"I believe most of the students have arrived. When do you plan to give your speech?"A silence followed the words of Glynda and she turned to look at her old friend.
"Professor Ozpin?"Dressed in his usual green suit, Ozpin raised his always filled mug of coffee to his lips before responding to his friend.
"It appears as though we are still missing a few. I wonder if this amphitheatre is that hard to find." he mumbled curiously before taking another sip.
"Let us wait for the remaining few.The two teachers stood in the shadows of the curtains on the stage in the large room, watching as first year students started to pour in, their faces an array of emotions ranging from nervousness to pure excitement. It almost brought a smile to Ozpin's face, though he knew it was too soon for blind optimism. Once those with potential passed his initiation, then he could smile with pride at them. Until then, he remained as stoic as ever. As his gaze traveled over the hundred or so students, he wondered just how many would make it past their second day, or the third. He wondered how many would realize that this wasn't truly their calling and drop out. He wondered... many things. Far too many to dwell on.
Without saying a word, he stepped over to the lone microphone that stood in the center of the stage. He waited a few moments, gathering the attention of the room with his presence alone before he cleared his throat.
"I'll... keep this brief." he started, waiting another moment as the last few students would gather at the back of the room. His eyes glanced over at Glynda who gave him a slight nod, and then he began to speak.
"The illusion of knowledge... it is what brought all of you here today. You are here in search of knowledge. To hone your craft and one day... protect the people. However, I look among you and all I see is wasted energy and a need for purpose. You knowledge will free you of this. Knowledge is only an illusion of strength, where as ignorance is a temporary affliction, remedied only by asking the right questions that will lead you to a greater answer.
"Your time at this academy will prove that knowledge can only carry you so far. It is up to you, to take the first step. But even then... in order to continue on, you will always need a helping hand."With one more look across the students, he turned and walked off the stage, his place taken by Glynda who began to speak shortly after.
"You are free the remainder of the day to familiarize yourself with the layout of the school. Tonight, you will gather in the ballroom and rest and your initiation begins tomorrow. Be ready. You are all dismissed."After a nod towards the students, she too left the stage and easily caught up with Ozpin who was waiting for her.
"I'll speak with the other instructors and see that everything is ready for the initiation tomorrow. I believe there are still some preparations to be done.""Very well. I'll be in my office, should you need anything." Ozpin said as he started to walk away.
Glynda turned away but paused and called out to her friend.
"Oh. What did you use for relics this year?" she asked him.
Ozpin continued to walk away, though he responded to her question.
"The one thing man cannot live without."
