Steven Universe: Second Gem War
Name
Pearl
Appearance
Gender
Female
Personality
Like the gem for which she is named, Pearl is a well balanced, well rounded perfectionist. As the placement of her gem is over her forehead, she has a tendency to overthink things. Intelligent, controlled and controlling, Pearl relies on her vast knowledge to make decisions, with a wide range of subjects varying from the history of gem kind to human engineering. Very organized, and meticulous, she can become flustered, and sometimes goes overboard (though she always means well). Despite, or because of, her obsession with neatness, Pearl is always graceful, from her elegant speech and prose to her fighting style, which closely resembles ballet.
Bio
Resources were depleting, and the gem world was being forced to outsource to other planets for more gemstones. Even as they established kindergartens on foreign planets, mining deep, there was still a plentiful supply of oysters on the gem homeworld, and with them, a seemingly infinite amount of pearls. Therefore, as so many could be churned out with ease, the Pearls became a servant class, serving as basically slaves, some lucky few becoming sentries for the higher-ups of society.
One Pearl was created from an oblong pearl- she was seen by the others as deformed, as defective. She was to be euthanized, until she was selected for sentry duty out of pity by Rose Quartz, to serve her personally. Upon coming into Rose's care, Pearl was granted her freedom. However, she chose to stay on in the service of Rose Quartz, taking care of her estate while she went off to other planets on missions.
Watching Rose as she did amazing things, going off to amazing places, Pearl began to wonder what it was like, out there, among the stars. Wishful thinking would get her nowhere fast, though, so she stood guard. Days passed. Months passed. Years went by, and Pearl simply stood guard, never knowing anything more than Rose Quartz's beautiful estate. However, it was not enough, and one day, she confronted Rose Quartz, and confessed to her the deep, intense longing she had- she yearned, more than anything, to travel through the stars with Rose. To explore space.
Amused, and impressed at Pearl's loyalty, Rose took the girl with her to Earth. Pearl was absolutely amazed by the wonders of the planet, presented to her by her hero. Rose saw the beauty in nature, and Pearl saw the beauty in mankind. Even as primitive creatures, they had a sense of free will, a sense of civilization, which was completely new to her, and fascinating. After one hundred years on Earth, though, both began to see the detrimental effects that the gems were having on the planet.
When the war began, Rose told Pearl to leave, to hide away, to protect herself. No matter how loyal she was, Rose said, Pearl still had a choice, and her safety should be her primary concern. Pearl insisted upon staying, and all throughout the war, she stayed at Rose's side, fighting with her through thick and thin. At the final battle in the strawberry fields, while everyone was being slaughtered, Rose desperately tried to convince Pearl to leave. Instead, she stayed- and in part, due to her efforts, the war was won. However, it was not won without casualties, both on the side of humans and of gems.
Guilt ridden, due to the damage they had caused in the war, Rose Quartz invited some of the gems- Pearl included- to stay with her on Earth, to protect humanity. For many centuries thereafter, the self-proclaimed Crystal Gems did just that.
Once Steven was born, Pearl harbored some resentment towards the child. However, as he grew older, she grew to love and care for him, becoming a bit overprotective. Once he grew into his powers, fully realizing himself, she began to see more of Rose in him than ever before. Now, she respects him, and loves him, and would do anything to help him.
When Steven began his friendship with the mayor of the town, Pearl befriended the man. They were a lot alike, in their personalities, in their perceptions of the world, et cetera. Buck Dewey took to Pearl quite easily; she was kind to him, albeit rather awkward. However, upon the realization that Dewey wanted more from her than just friendship, and knowing where romance could end, she ended their friendship before it could go any further.
