@Raylah What are the Rejected in your nation?

They are all humans, the Rejected are just those who werent able to pass the tests to become troops. It can be for multiple reasons - they might have some physical disabilities or just be weaker than the rest, trying to rebel against the society or any other reason that comes to mind. I imagined the babies that were thrown off a cliff in Sparta, but the scope will be a bit broader here.

@Tortoise
Thanks. They arent primarly set on dominating other planets or fighting other fellow humans, mostly just set on surviving at all costs.
And as for the ECU - there is certainly some room for diplomacy, although the Undefeated would oficially see ECU as weak and degenerate and not worthy of an alliance (unless there is a large scale war). There is a lot of room for trade and some unofficial dealings as well. The Holographic Suite is a nice idea, officially it would be great for training simulations, and unoficially, well... throw in a Saving private Ryan tape and some pretty girls and boys simulations and you got yourself a deal!
Do we even have any 'normal' colonies?

She will join in a bit later, for now you can assume she isnt there. I have an idea, but need some time to think it through before writing it.
Well it is still closer than coming from a software engineer
@Randomness You are an actual doctor? That is awesome. I have roleplayed a lot of medical-ish characters and always had to google a lot of things about medical procedures. Hey I even watched a video tutorial on how to do a breech birth But the posts would never be as good as from an actual professional.
Ding dong, the witch is dead!
As the others started to survey the ruins and set up an improvised camp, Elm finally had some uninterrupted time to study the tall trees, luminescent moss and to just be a biologist and not a team leader. Followed by a member of the security team she walked over to the edge of the forest and started to take samples from the plants, especially focusing on the trees which fascinated her. It seemed impossible to take a sample without damaging the trunk - the blue layer on the top wasn’t typical bark, but rather a solid, very hard cover without any dents or cracks as you would see on a normal tree. It made sense given the trees’ extreme height that they needed to be supported by something durable.

Elm sighed and took out a small scalpel she used to gather samples. She hated to harm the trees, but these were too fascinating to pass up on an opportunity to learn more about them. The blade ran over the blue surface, making an awful sound, but not leaving any marks. A frown appeared on Elm’s face when she found out that the once sharp tool is now blunt and useless. She turned over to her escort and fished out a small drill out of a backpack he was carrying. Diamond tip. That has to go through like a phaser beam through butter.

It didn’t. What the hell were these trees made of? Elm layed one hand on the trunk and closed her eyes. Despite what people thought, trees had certain ways to communicate with each other. It wasn’t communication as humans would imagine it, no gossiping about leaf colors or complaining about this year’s saplings, but more like shared feelings. Pleasant when the sun came up after rain. Wary when stronger wind blew. Fearful when there was a fire. Elm, being basically a tree herself, could sometimes connect to this communication. It was more difficult the more ‘alien’ the world was. Since the trees here weren’t like anything she had seen before, and to be honest, looked more like statues to her, she didn’t expect much from this. But the reaction was so strong she twitched and quickly pulled her hand back.

The trees were definitely alive, they weren’t some strange stone or metal tree-like statues as it might seem by their impenetrable bark. They were very much alive and while she couldn’t understand most of the communication running between them, she picked up on the strongest feeling - overwhelming hostility. This planet didn’t want them here.

Elm was a bit shaken, but didn’t lose hope of acquiring a sample. But how? Her thoughts were interrupted by the comms as Captain called the team back to the Prize. Looks like the negotiations didn’t go well. Elm wondered whether it had something to do with what she felt earlier. She was frustrated that they had to end the expedition so abruptly, but she was still the leader and had to make sure that on their way back everyone is encountered for and there is no equipment left behind. As she was returning towards the ruins, she finally saw something that made her happy. It was a sapling, a tiny version of the tall trees, not even a foot in height, but already with shining blue impenetrable bark. Elm removed it from the ground, carefully digging out all the roots, and placed it in a special container along with a large patch of the dirt it was originally growing from. At least some good news.

Back on the Prize Elm headed for a quick debriefing, learning that the negotiations truly didn’t end well. There was some alert from the bridge that took the captain and several more crew members away before they could decide on what to do next. As Elm’s assistance wasn’t needed in this situation, she went straight into the botany lab to oversee the processing of the many samples they collected on the planet, and, more importantly, to start studying the sapling.
@MST3K 4ever I think it is just fine ;)
(Addressing the exploration team: @Randomness@Eviledd1984@ShiningSector@MST3K 4ever)

Elm tried not to get lost in her thoughts as usual. This planet, however beautiful, was new, unexplored and possibly dangerous, so all of them had to be alert. So far they haven’t encountered any animals, aside from some tiny insects which could occasionally be seen crawling on the ground, none of which had shown any interest in the exploration party.

As the team approached the ruins, signs of ancient settlements were beginning to appear around them. Remains of a stone pillar, almost entirely covered by vegetation, with unintelligible markings washed away by centuries. Part of a stone wall, only about two feet tall, exotic red flower growing right from between the blocks. They followed what was most likely once a paved road, now overtaken by vegetation. There were no signs of life or any recent visitors, the place looked abandoned for at least decades. Was it intentional that they made us land here? They must have known that we would go and explore this place. Or it was just a convenient spot far away from their cities, so we wouldn’t get a chance to spy on their actual technology and population? So many questions Elm had no answers to. She hoped that the negotiations were going well and they wouldn’t have to return to the ship to evacuate the planet in case something went wrong.

The team stopped at what must have been a village square ages ago. Several stone huts around looked mostly intact and doctor Izumo was eager to go in and explore. “Okay people and people-like creatures,” Elm grinned, “I suggest we make base here. Once the buildings are explored, we can pick one to move our equipment to, so it’s not out here in the open. Of course only if doctor Izumo determines that it is all right to use the building for such purpose, we don’t want to end up camping in some sort of a temple. We could split up to cover more ground - part should stay here to survey the ruins and the rest can go into the forest to study the flora and fauna.” Needles to say, Elm was planning to go to the woods to finally have a chance to properly look at the tall blue trees and other plants.

“Just remember, nobody goes anywhere alone. Ever. Always be at least in pair with someone, ideally teams of three or four people, especially in the woods.”
@Eviledd1984 I think you mixed up the teams - your character is in the survey team, not the delegation meeting with Vei.
