I think we all know that a ship's cook is totally trustworthy and can be depended on in all cases. I can think of no notable example wherein a ship's cook had ulterior motives or acted against the interests of a captain.

No, but seriously, my cook will have some sort of a piratical past but he won't just be long John Silver even though he's my favourite character.

It's funny you should mention that, I've actually been leaning more towards doing an admiral-by-way-of-buccaneer type thing. So yes, go ahead and make captain of the guard and I'll shift onto admiral.
