It's probably the games I picked up in a Steam sale which caused me to procrastinate my love of the character and desire to do him justice that made it take much longer than Hanzo. Still, here he is.

Reinhardt Wilhelm likes certainty. He likes knowing what he's doing and that it's the right thing to do. Where most people drift through life in a haze of indecision, indeterminate angst or existential dread, Reinhardt has always been certain of what is right and what to do. He knew that he should help his fellow man, that he should join Overwatch, that the Omnics needed to be stopped. On a more personal level, he was sure that he loved Ana Amari, that she was the only one for him and that he was content in the knowledge she loved him. In fact, there was little Reinhardt was not certain of during those days of black and white, when the greatest threat to the human race reared its head. It was a simple time and one that suited Reinhardt's unflinching honesty of purpose.

Of course, things have changed.

Nowadays, the world is painted over in shadows, blurs and greys. It is hard to be certain of anything in these uncertain times, when old friends become enemies and the dead don't stay down. There are Omnics rising again but also those that wish only for freedom and peace. But then there are humans who seem to want neither, some that operate without regard to consequence for humans or Omnics. For a man used to an obvious enemy he can fight on an open field with stalwart warriors at his side, this lack of clarity has robbed Reinhardt of his once legendary vigour. He is often more withdrawn and tired than the days of old, rousing to his former ferocity when there is a task worthy of a Crusader, one of uncomplicated right and wrong.

At other times, it seems that he has given ground to the uncertain present and retreated to the surety of the past. On some days, you could be forgiven for thinking he had slept through the thirty years since the last Omnic war, what with his upbeat demeanour and jovial references to those long in their graves; his commander, his friends, his love. And in a sense, he has. In order to keep sane, to keep fighting, Reinhardt has sacrificed surety for self delusion, fooling himself that the old days never died. Whether he allows himself to know how much things really have changed and how much has been lost varies from day to day, swinging with his mood.

B R I E F B I O G R A P H Y

Born in Berlin, the capital of Germany, Reinhardt was raised on the stories of ancient chivalry that distracted him from the perils and hardships of the present. He grew up dreaming of slaying dragons and leading charges, rather than worrying about the dire straights his country was in. But unlike most young men, the teenage Reinhardt did not abandon those childish dreams but worked on them. He trained his body, running for stamina, lifting for strength. He trained his mind, studying ancient books on tactics and the art of war, honing his brain and his brawn to work as one engine.

Upon his eighteenth birthday, his parents were unsurprised to learn that he would enrolling in the military and bade off an excited son with pride. He excelled in basic training, outstripping his contemporaries with ease but always slowing down enough to give them a helping hand. It was these qualities combined that brought him to the attention of the UN Advanced Research Division, the department that would one day spawn such wonders as the biotic grenade, the caduceus staff and Winston. They asked him to undergo a series of Genetic Therapies that they claimed would make him a better soldier in every way. Eagerly, he accepted.

The program was a resounding success, turning an already above average man into a hulking titan. He towered over most mortals and had strength enough stop a charging rhino with a single punch. In the years to come, he would also find that it had slowed down his ageing process, making sure he would be able to fight effectively for decades to come. It was then that Reinhardt became a founding member of The Crusaders, Germany's first line of defence. They were a heavily armoured legion of warriors that styled themselves on the Knights of old, much of which was due to Reinhardt's creative input.

They were not long formed, however, before they were rent asunder but the fury of the Omnics. The Crusaders were one of the first casualties of the Crisis, all but a handful dying to defend crucial choke-points and evacuation routes from the mechanical threat. They were dark days but the Crusaders proved themselves up to the task, never failing to hold the line or stand in front of a hail of bullets for a non-combatant. It seemed that Reinhardt would have no one to stand alongside, for a time, before a new organistion rose to face the Omnics; Overwatch.

The following days where the happiest of Reinhardt's life. He fought alongside heroes, comrades and friends to save the world, never falling but to be helped up and never advancing but with someone beside him. He met the love of his life, Ana Amari and, for a time, he was happy in his place in the world. He was a knightly hero. But then the war ended and although he celebrated with the rest of them, a sense of unease stole over Reinhardt. What happens to sodliers when the war ends?

He found that they are expected to retire or be quiet and neither was in his nature. Overwatch went from a pantheon of heroes to mess, Blackwatch taking over a large chunk of their operational purview and beginning to turn public opinion against them. It seemed that wherever he turned, things were souring; Reyes and Morrison were constantly bickering, Ana was more and more distant and now Omnics seemed to be making a subtle return into the spotlight. And then the hammer fell.

Overwatch was fallen, along with Jack, Ana and Gabriel. Those operatives who survived the tragedy were left to mourn in peace but were clearly informed that they were not to return to the field; those days were done. A part of of Reinhardt wanted to rail against the decision but there was too sorrow in his soul for anger to get any traction. With a heavy heart, he turned his back on the battlefield and went into a journey of solitude and regret.

It lasted for around five years before he woke. He was Reinhardt Wilhelm, a warrior, a knight, a crusader. While there good deeds to do, he would do them. He joined forces with a talented engineer named Brigitte, who he playful referred to as his squire, and turned a lonely journey into a bright new crusade. Many injustices were set to right and many tyrants toppled by the giant and his squire, much light brought to a dark world.

And now Overwatch has been born again. Cautiously, Reinhardt has agreed to accept membership once more, telling Angela Ziegler that she could call on him when he was needed, but has not stopped his crusade. Rather than join them in the new HQ, the old Lion still walks the earth, looking for battles most worthy and monsters to slay.

♚ Charge

Using the large booster on the back of his Crusader armour, Reinhardt hurtles forward with one shoulder dropped and his hammer cocked back for an immediate swing. While he can't really alter his course once the charge starts, the colossal force and weight of the charge will destroy all but the toughest of foes.

♚ Firestrike

Using the Rocket Hammer's jets to generate a fireball, Reinhardt swings his weapon to launch a projectile that, due to its gaseous state, passes directly through shields or other energy barriers to deal damage to those behind them.

♚ Barrier Field

From a Lion's head insignia on his left wrist, Reinhardt is able to project a large shield, to protect himself and any comrades from long range attacks. There are certain energy based weapons that can penetrate it with ease though, and the field has a limited durability. After that is exceeded, causing iot to shatter, the field takes some five seconds to reform.

Even without his suit, Reinhardt is one of the strongest beings on the planet. With it, he becomes a titan of myth, able to withstand a hail of gunfire without flinching and the shatter walls with a single punch, to say nothing of the charge booster or Rocket Hammer.

♚ Rocket Hammer

The symbol of warriors and builders both, a hammer can normally be a scary enough weapon. This hammer is wielded by a mechanised behemoth and powered by a small jet engine, letting every strike feel like a meteoric blow.

U L T I M A T E A B I L I T Y
♛ Earth Shatter

Bringing the Rocket Hammer down with incredible force, Reinhardt creates a mini earthquake, cracking the ground and destabilising anyone caught in its radius. Those who are airborne are unaffected but anyone on the ground is invariably thrown to the floor for the handful of seconds it takes to recollect themselves and regain their feet. And as any veteran can tell you, a handful of seconds makes all the differences in a battle.

You know what, sure, let's do this.

- can't be killed by destroying replaceable robot bodies
So, he can't be killed by destroying his body, you'd have to kill all his bodies and then his AI which is Vishkar corporation's HQ, right? So to actually kill him, you'd have to break into one of the world's largest corporations, kill or incapacitate their huge numbers of security and then destroy the core, not even counting the Age of Ultron like challenge of finding every trace of his AI on the internet. As destroying the core is presumably happened during the Omnnic war and he's clearly still kicking. Not to mention the fact that every other character dies if you kill them, with the semi exception of Dva, but even then it's only a suit and she doesn't eject far.

So destroying his body wouldn't rupture his power core? Would an oddly specific weakness.

You said it could "destroy a small house and irradiate a city block", so it's on a level with Dva's Ult, which we'll address in a minute, with the addition of radiation which, as pointed out, has no real world cure and you mention it can't be healed.

You say that like it's not overpowered. He can literally control other players "easily", as long as they use machinery or are omnics.

Maybe you haven't played much Overwatch but there are dozens of counterplays to D.va's ult. Reinhardt can use his shield or charge it, Lucio can Ult or boop it away, Zarya can bubble, Roadhog can hook it away. With radiation that ignores shields and armour and can't be healed, there's no counterplay other than not be near it. It could potentially be hooked or booped, though you haven't mentioned the radius and that would still be death for whoever did the hooking or booping.

Which you didn't mention or specify in your sheet, though you did mention that the radiation in the Ultimate is unhealable, which would lead one to assume it all is.

Incorrect, Ana's grenade blocks healing for a very short time, it's not unhealable damage. It also doesn't bypass armour and shield.

Well, not exactly. You're alive until you lose your last point of health, as armour and shield always die first and all characters have some health under their shields and there's no canon hero who ignores either. You don't ever die from losing all your shields or armour as you'd always have a minimum of 1 HP underneath.

Yeah, here's where I assume you're intentionally missing my point. I made the point that your character is against what Overwatch's power levels stand for. All the heroes are on similar levels, though they obviously have different strengths. Rein will always beat Zennyatta in a physical confrontation but Zennyatta can heal and support his friends. None of them are glaringly more powerful than the others, if you accept that a man can be so good with a bow that he's at the level of Mecha pilot. But your character can kill anyone, control other heroes, ignores the main defence against damage and even if he was miraculously overcome, would just build a new body or reside in on the internet and/or Vishkar HQ.

- Yeah I'm pretty curious about why this is. Honestly it makes the timeline completely screwy, since the Omnic Crisis was supposed to take place roughly 30 years before the setting of the game.
On this, at least, we agree. I don't quite get why the GMs have chosen to move back the timeline but they have and they are the GMs.

My overall point is that no hero is comparable to yours in terms of deadliness or the ability to survive, not the way you've written him. I get the sense from your writing and briefly looking at some of your other sheets that this is deliberate and, well, whatever floats your boat. But being in any sort of conflict with this character would be pretty much pointless for, say, Mcree or Tracer, which rather makes the roleplay a bit boring.

So, this character is unkillable, though if you destroy his body then a massive bomb goes off, he can control other omnics or machines and his ult has no counterplay aside from staying away from him? Not to mention he has radiation based abilities, meaning if he hits you enough times you're going to die and no one can save you, as there's no cure for radiation poisoning, unless Mercy's Caduceus Tech can? And even then, apparently the ultimate is unhealable.

I do want to ask a question, though: if your weapon and ult can bypass shields and armor, doesn't that make them both pointless? Once a person's health is completely gone, they can't survive on shields and armour. They'll be dead, but well shield and armoured. 0 HP is dead, even if you still have armour or shields, both in the game and according to common sense.

Honestly, the character is just incredibly unbalanced for a mainly Street level team fight style of game. I'm mean, look at the canon heroes. A lot of them just shoot laser guns, bows or revolvers. One only has a hammer. And then this character can kill anything with radiation and will level a city block if his body is destroyed.

Obviously it's up to the GMs to accept this or not, but in my view, this really flies in the face everything that Overwatch is about.

EDIT: His sheet also mentions that he was woken in 2042. The timeline for this version of Overwatch's present is 2017.

Well, aren't there only three Talon agents in the canon that we know of? Sombra, Reaper and Widowmaker. You're right, it will totally affect the team dynamics but it's not far from the source material.

Hanzo is not a particularly complex man, simply being a product of the rigorous upbringing of the Shimada clan, but it is his monumental force of character that makes him harder to understand. Having been raised to venerate tradition, work hard for the clan and value loyalty above all else, it is no surprise that he treats his father's words as holy writ and has more hours logged into the dojo and archery range than half the rest of the clan combined. He and his brother are members of the Shimada clan and their superior station and advantages come with obligations. It is his duty to never be second best, to be the heir and warrior his father needs, he believes, even though it may cost him happiness and peace of mind in the process. The illegal nature of the clan's ventures often weighs heavily upon his mind as well but he is determined he will not shame himself or his father by questioning his orders. When he takes command of the house of Shimada, however, things may be different.

As such, he comes off as anti-social, aloof or grouchy to those who meet him and they are not wholly wrong. The one time Hanzo's persona of contemptuous superiority drops is in the presence of his younger brother. With Genji, some of his years are removed and the two seem little changed from the boys who stole sweets from the kitchens and skipped training sessions in favour of spending hours at the Hanamura arcade. it never lasts, as Hanzo is mindful of his adult responsibilities in direct contradiction to the attitude Genji has to his. The two may be more different than brothers have any right to be but they nevertheless enjoy each other's company and the times they have spent laughing together have been the happiest of Hanzo's life. With Genji's recent exodus from the Shimada clan, however, his dour mood is more present than ever before. He also fears for Genji's survival, both because his brother is engaged in a dangerous business and because his wayward ways may soon make him an enemy of clan Shimada. And enemies are to be destroyed...

Born the son of one of Japan's most powerful crime syndicates, the Shimada clan, Hanzo was groomed for greatness from a young age. His education was without equal, with equal amounts of time spent on philosophy, mathematics and literature, though the subject given most time was the craft of war. Almost before he could walk, he could swing a katana and he could fire a bow long before he could read. His father, Shimada Genichi, could not have wished for a more pliant and obedient son. That was, until his brother arrived.

Genji's birth was marred by the sad even of their mother, Shimada Haruyo, passing away and until Genji was able to express himself, Shimada castle was sad and solemn place. It was when the young boy was able to talk that some light was reintroduced into Hanzo's life, for none could make him smile or laugh quite like his younger brother. The two were inseparable for some years, despite their father calling Genji a 'bad influence' and their many tutors agreeing.

But when the two became men, Hanzo's sense of duty reasserted itself. He put aside childish things and once more took up the bow and katana and soon the enemies of clan Shimada learned to fear his coming. He assumed that Genji too would grow up and become the faithful warrior that their father expected him to, but he was wrong. Genji would heed the word of no man, tow the line of no authority figure. He distanced himself from the clan, first in small ways and then more obviously.

Things have recently come to a head with Genji's affiliation with Overwatch. Where before he was simply removed from the clan's field of interest, he now actively opposes them. Soon, Hanzo fears he will be ordered to destroy his brother and will have to choose between loyalty to his father, to the clan and his loyalty to his brother.

While he isn't the ninja his brother is, Hanzo is still immensely skilled at mobility and escape, allowing him to scale seemingly sheer surface with ease.

➵ Sonic Arrow

An arrow that emits a specially designated frequency that reverberates around an area of roughly 10³ metres. Based on the echoes it gives off, Hanzo can estimate the position of enemies with unerring accuracy.

➵ Scatter Arrow

Another technologically advanced arrow, the Scatter Arrow's head splits into several dozen separate smaller arrows that bounce off flat surfaces until they strike an enemy. Good in enclosed spaces or when fired at the feet of a large opponent.

➵ Stormbow

The traditional weapon of the Shimada clan, a normal bow is a deadly enough weapon in the hands of master but Hanzo's Stormbow sports all the innovation that technology and wealth can provide.

➵ Katana

While not as proficient with the blade as with the bow, Hanzo is still one of the foremost duellists in Japan and no member of the Shimada clan can equal his skill.

➵ Fists

When disarmed, a true warrior must still be able to inflict suffering upon his foes. The Shimadas understand this rule and the brothers have had long years of hand to hand training beaten into them.

I agree with this, I haven't finished the Hanzo sheet (it's coming along...) but he's going to be every bit as grumpy as the canon version of the character and probably a bit more to fit the tone. Though if anything, it'll be less grumpy and more serious and anti-social, due to conflicted loyalties and character stuff.

So yeah, probably not friends with a super-duper-happy gamer who is around twenty years his junior.
