Nobody is controlling Gumbo at the moment. I'm guessing we're just wrapping up all the fights and see where it goes from there.

Someone could play the lord of the estate, hiring the heroes and also going on the travels with them.
I think it would be cool if we made some custom heroes, and maybe the lord of the estate could be one of them. Perhaps really strong, but insanely important that he not die.
So I was planning to wait for a break in the action, but should I just charge in now? It doesn't seem like there's much forward momentum.

Even if it's not important to him, you should probably put a specific number so as not to interfere with other people in the future.
So, since The Fated Fallen and Lady Selune both seem interested in playing a specific hero, perhaps we have mostly people playing as heroes and people who wanted to play as recruiters/ hero managers. (If nobody else wants to do this, I'll gladly create a character to fill this role).

Oh, that's not necessary. Nothing has actually happened in the last 10 days, and I don't think you really missed all that much while you were away.
