Name: The Republic of Omicron
Flag:Population: 80 Million
History:The race to space is now one of sheer desperation but was once viewed only to further the goals of Humanity. In the early late 20th and early 21st century, the People's Republic of China courted several African nations for their rich resources. The growing dragon of the east needed a vast quantity of iron, oil and a myriad of other capital to continue forwards. The middle east and south America were ideal partners but Africa was their favored playing ground. Angola was one country in the continent that China favored the most. Rich in oil, gas, diamonds and agricultural land, Angola was a target of Chinese intervention. China made a number of extensive investments towards the struggling country. In return, China grew from the massive exports of natural resources. Both countries flourished from their trade agreement.
However China's involvement in Angola was not purely economical. In the 2030's, China started to bolster its space program. A government owned company, Aviation Industry Corporation of China, took over the China National Space Administration. The company was also renamed into the Chang'e Corporation. Chang'e corp then went on to create the Chinese National Space Station, more popularly known as the "Yutu". China's space dominance seemed inevitable. In May 16, 2053, China commissioned the start of Project Omicron. Originally stationed in the Harbin Institute of Technology, Project Omicron was established to discover ways on how to mine resources from heavenly bodies. Omicron was given substantial funding to carry out its research. Omicron embarked on a monumental task. To hide the true nature of the project from foreign powers, Project Omicron was labeled as communications research.
In February 8 2070, the Chinese New Year, the fruits of Omicron were shown to the world. 17 years prior, Chang'e corp relocated the Omicron team to Angola to proceed with their research there. Angolan authorities agreed to cooperate with the Chinese in exchange for weapons trading. The Chinese began to set up a launch pad near the capital city of Luanda. Titanic amounts of resources were sent to the site. Within a year, the site was prepared. Another 6 years and a working prototype was announced. Two more years were needed to perfect their machine. On February 8, 2063, the Tian Si was launched towards the asteroid belt. In seven years time, China announced to the world that it had successfully brought back materials from the asteroid belt. The international scientific society begged the Chinese officials to allow them to study the materials. Precious rocks, rare minerals, gas and liquid material. However China didn't allow them, only allowing state scientist to examine the samples. The international body was enraged however there was nothing much they could do. China had shown the world its capability. It had sent an unmanned drone to the reaches of space to collect materials never before collected. However the operation itself has cost the Chinese more than they gained. The next step was to make the collection of materials profitable. China was still a growing economy and the resources on Earth were rapidly dwindling.
However conflict had arrived before further developments could be done. First, a strong rebellion force from Angola's northern provinces forced the PRC to deploy to pacify the situation. Then a new radical government of Congo waged war on Angola. China's growth was further hampered by its foreign interventions. Then China began to wage a war of its own against its neighbors. The eastern dragon was constantly getting bogged down in more and more problems. Omicron was forced to take over more and more aspects of Chinese affairs in Angola simply because the Chinese could not focus on its external projects. First Omicron became fully autonomous so long as it kept within a budget allocated by Chang'e corp. Then it was forced to recruit its own protection force. Omicron became more and more powerful with each passing moment however they focused on their original goal of research. The PRC sent a official party overseerer to supervise the project and make sure that the research would not be sold into the wrong hands.
This would change however when the United States went into armed conflict with China. The reasons are obscure and lost to time, however the effects were devastating. Omicron would be caught in the crossfire when America decided to aid the Congo in a renewed offensive against their southern neighbors. The PRC had a considerable presence in the area to funnel resources back to the Chinese war machine. The PLA kept its ground as attacks and counter attacks were drawn out. Key locations were being attacked by American bombers. Such locations were the Omicron Launch site and research stations. Omicron, with its increasing autonomy, began to subvert troops from the front line to defend its vital operations. The Omicron teams were more and more frantic to salvage anything from their years of work and development. Their hops were crushed when the Americans dropped an EMP bomb on the research headquarters. It was shocking to think that a weapon from the past would cost as much damage as it had. A majority of the information gathered on the site were destroyed. Communications with Beijing were cut off. The chain of command was broken in that instant.
With that, the remaining Chinese forces in Angola had two options. They could have either surrendered or they would assume control themselves. With the Angolan government in ruins, a high ranking PLA general strong armed the fracturing Angolan Armed Forces to push back. In the meantime the only people with the resources and manpower to rebuild the nation stepped forwards to repair the damage done. Omicron went from a research and development team into a transitional government. Funding from the project temporarily went into the war effort and later into reconstructing infrastructure. Leading scientist were forced to redirect their focus from scientific pursuits to local management. Omicron security was quickly refurbished to become a civil peacekeeping unit. The quasi-police force were deployed all throughout the country. However civil unrest still continues. A Chinese upper class with no knowledge about the nation now governed it. This was further compounded by the fact that recent observations of sun showed it was quickly dying and that the Human race was nearing extinction. Now Omicron's mission has turned from resource extraction to Human preservation. With time a precious commodity, its research facilities and launch site has to be repaired as soon as possible. However the ongoing struggles of the common Angolan people are strangling their success. This strange, new government must find a way to balance the needs of the masses and the race to save Humanity.
