As Duncan passed the edge of the bridge, shortly before the royal entourage, he caught sight of the young Warden, Joras, and signaled the youth with a brief motion of his glove. As he pulled the Warden to the side, he kept his voice low as he spoke so the Ferelden soldiers, perched along the ramparts like armored crows, could not overhear. "We have an elf with us, a mage, she is in the final stages of the taint, but we will need her magic if we want to survive. Find her behind me on the bridge and get her to the healers, but stay with her. We can not afford to have a mage succumb to the taint and wreak havoc on the eve of battle. Keep your blade close at hand and if the time comes, do what must be done." Duncan clasped the young Warden firmly by the shoulder before parting. "Only if you have no other choice," he emphasized again before heading off toward the camp.
That sounds awesome, Fallen. I like how you're holding firm to the 17th century privateer themes. One more question since asking serves to bump the thread. What is the role of magic in world in general and sea faring in particular? Does every ship have a mage on board to spam gust of wind at the sails, scry the horizon and the like or are mages more rare than this in the world?
This setting is enthralling. Can we get more info on gnomes? How advanced is their technology? What resource are they mining underwater? Do they actually have submersibles comparable to diesel subs or are we talking about diving bells here?

Oh, okay I just don't know how to post any other way, but I see what you mean

In creative writing class the first thing you should hear on day one is 'show don't tell.' It's like one of the mantras of writers up there with 'may plot be with you' and 'never introduce a bomb you don't intend to explode'. It mainly exists for the purpose of avoiding 'passive voice' but there's a host of other reasons. For the RP, though, avoiding it is more about removing an opportunity for metagaming and heightening immersion by making the limited perspectives of the characters match more accurately the limited perspectives of the players. In other words, if it works you feel a bit more like your character and bit less like someone writing the character.

Don't mistake me harping on it for some kind of warning. I totally understand slipping into omniscient voice and I will do it too, if I haven't already. I'm just trying to make sure people remember, because you're right many RPs are done in passive voice which would make sense... if the RPs were set on Betazed.

Posted,

Thanks but you're in third person omniscient. Your telling us your character's internal thoughts and feelings. We have no way of knowing them. Please try to remain in the limited perspective.

Think of it this way. What's more dramatic? If we all know all the internal thoughts, desires and motivations of every character as if we are all Martian Manhunter or if the true nature of those intentions remains somewhat a mystery until pried into and divulged over the course of the story? Also consider that if you divulge all that information in passing PCs will have no reason to ask you and if they did it would be boring because they'd know the answer out of character before you ever posted in character.

When it comes to introspection less is more.

Kayla is King Cailan, but as a woman.

Correct, remember this is a remix so not everything will be the same.
I'm interested. Home brew is where it's at.

I don't exactly know how to start my first post. Hmm

Have him engaging in some kind of activity or dialogue that highlights his character. Maybe he is having a discussion with one of the Tranquil who he has allowed to study him. That could make for an entertaining scene.
