I came out of lurking because I heard there were lesbians.
Chou observed the scene before her. The other girl reacted to the spider by screaming, jolting up out of her seat, and falling over in a tangle of other tables and chairs. The first-year took notes in her head, all about that girl's scream, her facial expression, and the way her body moved in response to the large spider. Some people didn't react the same way as her; others might have tried to crush the spider, or call for help. This girl, however, had...a completely normal reaction. The part that wasn't so usual, however, was her picking up the spider then seeking out its owner. Finding Chou wasn't that difficult, and the girl plopped Chou's spider onto her head as she presented the first-year with a question.
"I assume this is yours, then?"
"Yes," Chou answered. The spider's front legs were getting in the corners of her eye, but for now, she didn't mind leaving it up there. Placing a hand on top of the spider to keep it balanced on her head as she bowed forward, Chou said "I am Kimura Chou, a first-year who will be joining the Manga Club. This was field research on my part, as I specialize in horror manga and like to keep my characters' reactions authentic. I'll be in your care." Hopefully this mystery girl didn't take Chou's research the wrong way. It had happened before; no reason for it not to happen now after all. @Emuxe
Saint Lilium's Academy for Young Women. I did it! Chou mentally cheered. She'd made it into this school, complete with its own Manga Club! Finally being able to surround herself with people that shared her aspirations was quite the relief, best demonstrated in her eagerness to get to the club room and meet the other club members, new and old alike. Map in hand and bag over her back, Chou navigated the halls of the school's buildings, first visiting her very own dorm room to drop off the small amount of luggage she'd brought along. I can unpack later. After the dorm, her next stop was the Manga Club's room.
She'd gotten lost a few times and had to ask for directions, but ultimately, Chou had arrived without incident. To see somebody else was already there, even! Whoever she was, she seemed to be pretty relaxed, arms behind her head and all. And her eyes were closed. Idea. How better to get to know somebody than by jumping right into it? It wasn't social interaction that Chou was jumping into, however. Oh no. Instead, the new student reached into her bag, her hand emerging with a large stuffed spider. She planned to jump right into "studying" this stranger in the clubroom. And so, Chou - after a bit of aiming - tossed the stuffed spider - about the size of a person's head - into the clubroom, landing the plush arachnid on a table just near the other student with a soft oomph.
She'd have to pay attention to what happened next. @Emuxe

There's shipping, and then there's Chou shipping. A font of unlimited imagination, Chou is an aspiring manga artist with two very common themes in her work: Horror, and yuri. Her personal stance on the matter is that fear and love are two of the strongest emotions in the long list of what a human can experience, and the conflict of a force that urges somebody to not do something versus a force that drives a person to go above and beyond for somebody else pleases her to no end. Of all the struggles in the world she savors, it's by far her favorite. As the wording could imply, she enjoys seeing all forms of struggles, but by no means is Chou a bad person. She's totally harmless, and actually a sweet girl who would go above and beyond for somebody she considers worth it. Even for people who aren't considered worth her 100%, Chou is kind, well-mannered, and sociable. A real friend-maker, and the last sort of person one would suspect of drawing manga with violent death, psychological horror, torture, and other very not-sweet themes.
Chou is also an outdoors girl. She prefers the sky over her head and the grass under her body, with fresh air surrounding her on every side. With an affinity for wet weather, Chou seems to produce higher-quality art under a dark, thundering sky, as opposed to a clear blue one. By her own account, this isn't out of any love for such weather, so much as to help her get into the mood for some good horror. Similarly, she's got a tendency to prefer working on her art in dimly-lit places, in the presence of any number of creepy items, or just otherwise in situations that would make people uncomfortable and/or nervous. Chou actually handles her own fear very well, but the problem comes from her "research" for the sake of getting the right facial expressions and whatnot. Chou's "experiments" can and typically will involve spooking whoever her unlucky volunteer is, be it with a scary atmosphere or catching them by surprise with a jumpscare. This in turn can make her a bit unpredictable.
She means no harm of course. Well, she does, but not maliciously. Her intents are "purely scientific", though she's also be lying if she said she didn't enjoy seeing people scared. Even above love, fear is her favorite emotion in people, so if Chou can invoke it in somebody - herself included - she will. In her own words, "My fear is the fire I forge my stories in. Everyone else's is the metal I need to actually make it." A particular frustration of hers is that while she has the horror part down-pat for her works, she can never quite get the romance part right. She can fantasize about girls in relationships all she wants, but her work generally doesn't feel right on the love front to her. And if you don't think there will be fantasizing, you've got another think coming.
Of course, scary things aren't the only things Chou likes. She's still a girl in the end. Although she'd prefer snakes or spiders, stuffed animals are perfectly acceptable to her. Her favorite flavor is chocolate, pink is her favorite color, and she likes to work to cabaret music. Aside from spooky things like spiders or worms, Chou's favorite animals are rabbits, as she likes to surround herself with soft & fluffy things if she isn't working on her next horror story. As into scary stuff as she is, one would be a fool to assume it has any impact on Chou being a kind-hearted and generally optimistic girl.
Unless puppets are invovled. Fuck those things.
Chou's origins are nothing worth mention. Born out in the rural countryside and raised by perfectly normal parents, Chou's primary caretaker was in fact neither of her parents. Being busy folk, Chou's parents left most of her upbringing in the hands of her elder brother; a twenty-year-old NEET with a magnetic personality that made him great with kids. Under the watchful eye of elder brother Hiro, Chou's development went smoothly, though he couldn't help but note young Chou's drawings were...disturbing. By Hiro's own account, this was probably his own fault in retrospect; scary movies aren't the best thing to leave on TV when taking caring of a toddler. Whatever the cause, Chou's "unique" art caught the attention of her art teachers once school started for the child. She was talented, no doubt, but she had a tendency to draw up monsters more at home in a child's nightmares than the primary school's classroom wall or the fridge back home.
Rather than discourage her, however, Chou's teacher saw a way to help her use her..."charming" imagination to its best. Chou was encouraged to try writing scary stories to go along with her drawings; she certainly had the vision for it, so it was just a matter of refining her writing. This led to her asking Hiro for advice, who in turn lent her the first few volumes of a horror manga he thought would suit her. Chou was enthralled by the book presented to her. She wanted to create books and stories like that one. This was how Chou decided on her life dream. She wanted to be a manga artist that created a big-name horror series. Once she had the dream, Chou knew it was the one meant for her. She worked toward it tirelessly, improving her art and writing with each new draft of a manga, dipping into other genres (generally comedy) whenever she found herself burned out on horror.
Her effort isn't without reward. Chou has grown into quite the artist, and a fairly decent writer to boot. Of course, she hasn't neglected her studies either. She wouldn't make it into Saint Lilium if she did, after all. Once she arrived, Chou knew the perfect club for her. Among the new blood in the Manga Club, Chou is thrilled to finally be surrounded by individuals with similar goals and passions.
"One-to-ten scales are too boring! Let's dial it up to eleven! No, twelve! Ooh, how about fifty!?"
Name: Morioka Yukari
Age: 16
Year: 3rd
Clubs: Airsoft Club, Kenjutsu Club, has been pushing for the creation of a Science Club for a bit over a year now
At a glance, Yukari seems batshit insane, probably because, put simply, she is. In her defense, being hopped up on adrenaline and dopamine 24/7 can make a person can do that to a person. Yukari isn't the sort of person to ever stop and take a breather; if she's not doing something, it probably means she's asleep. It would suffice to say she's chronically high on life, if not on dopamine. As a result, Yukari's face is constantly decorated by an ear-to-ear smile, though it seems anything but innocent thanks to her not finding it necessary to keep her hair or clothes looking neat. Appearances aren't everything however; despite looking like somebody who would by all means gut a person then skip rope with their innards, Yukari's actually a pretty good person at heart. She's just really, really enthusiastic, more than a little bit crazy, and extremely impulsive. "Good" and "kind" don't always go hand-in-hand either. Yukari's a bit of an asshole, actually, but she'll have somebody's back if they need her.
If Yukari suddenly wants to do something, she just does it without consulting any person or rulebook first. Despite being a smart kid, she's the sort of person who can and will break the same rule repeatedly because she has exactly zero fucks to give. She'll do something bad, get in trouble, leave on her merry way, then do the same thing again, all with the same shit-eating grin on her face. Such is the cycle of Yukari as a rulebreaker. As previously mentioned, she's not stupid. Quite the contrary, in fact; Yukari is an extremely intelligent girl, and observant to boot. If she's paying attention to something, no detail will escape her or the steel trap known as her mind. Perhaps her intelligence is why she's so fascinated with science.
Or maybe it's just because she likes explosions and the like. A devoted researcher and fan of what she calls "the science of destruction", Yukari studies across various scientific fields, but her research always adds up to how much of X subject Y can take before Y finally breaks. On its own, this would be fine, but the problem here lies in that Yukari is a very hands-on researcher. She doesn't just want to calculate how much wind a building can take before it loses its integrity; she wants to be there and watch it happen. Likewise, she isn't happy just calculating how much weight per square foot solid earth can take before starting to give in; she'd have to set up the experiment herself. Yukari's research has a knack for putting her life in danger. She doesn't even seem to care if she dies; that would just show how much damage an adrenaline-pumped human body can take before dying. Fortunately, she has little interest in living subjects for the time being.
Of all the words out there, Yukari's favorite is extreme. It suits the theme of her research perfectly, and makes everything more fun. When Yukari does something, she goes 200% all-in, and expects anyone - or anything - else to do the same. Anything less than the extreme of effort is an insult to her, be it a fight, research, or even something as mundane as making food. Yukari hates quitters above all else, and would like to pretend they don't exist. Of course, that can be difficult when things that don't exist actually do to her.
One shouldn't be surprised to spot Yukari seeing or hearing things that aren't there. A schizophrenic, Yukari treats her hallucinations the same way she treats her daily life: Gung ho with a side of destructive science. While she's smart enough to generally deduce what's real and what isn't, she isn't the type of person to just ignore somebody. Passing oneself off as one of her hallucinations is not smart. While she can be violent with real people, her treatment of the fake ones would have her put in prison if they were real. "Violent" doesn't even begin to cover it.
Perhaps it's the result of being unable to feel pain. Maybe it's her letting off stress or trying some twisted coping mechanism to keep her hallucinations in check. Or maybe - and most likely - she's just a sadistic little shit. Whatever the case, Yukari's treatments for her hallucinations are not something the faint of heart should inquire about. According to Yukari's account, they are very, VERY painful, tortuous, and to her, absolute bliss. She's expressed several times that she'd like to try diluted "treatments" with real people to observe the aftereffects, but blames herself for the lack of volunteers. If nothing else, at least she's honest.
Yukari was born with a glandular defect. Specifically, her medulla - responsible for creating adrenaline and, to an extent, dopamine - is extremely active. It's constantly pumping adrenaline and dopamine into Yukari's system, and the result is...well, Yukari. Growing up, holding friendships was a challenge for Yukari. She was violent, for one, and other kids just couldn't keep up with her pace. Not that Yukari had any problem with that; they just slowed her down, after all.
It wasn't just physically, either. Despite her behaviors perhaps suggesting otherwise, Yukari is a genius, and was able to skip an entire grade early into her schooling. Friends were quickly made and quickly lost, and as the years moved on it became clear that Yukari wasn't just another hyperactive child. At age twelve, Mr. and Mrs. Morioka took Yukari to the doctor to see if something was wrong with her, at which time her medulla problem became clear. She was also diagnosed as being likely to develop schizophrenia (she did so about a year later), as well as having ADHD. Her parents tried to work with the suggestion of medicating her to bring her adrenaline and dopamine levels down, but medicating somebody who's smarter than you isn't easy. Especially if they don't want the meds. When they asked about alternative treatments, the doctor simply suggested to keep her active so that she'd tire herself out. Things were good for the walking ball of bodily chemicals.
At age 13, Yukari began her schooling at Saint Lilium. Yukari has proven time and again to be problematic. Her violent streak - while dampened - still exists, and she has difficulty maintaining herself in an orderly fashion. However, her stellar grades and being such a valuable asset to both the Airsoft and Kenjutsu Clubs in school tournaments, combined with being a legitimately good person despite her flaws who has definitely done good things for student and staff alike when she can, have done just enough work to keep her from being removed from the school.
Besides, she's already been here for two years. Just one more and the staff is finally rid of Yukari, then she's somebody else's problem.
Took longer than I'd hoped, but first 1st-year get.

I must have forgotten when signing up for this what "multiverse" means. RPing as or with pre-existing characters doesn't sit well with me, so I'll have to bow out of this one early.
