Wow, this has a very nice simplistic charm to it. I'll probably make a character for this.
I'm thinking of making a staff member. Which type of channeler is in most demand for a mentor? Wavecaster, Architect, or Alternative?
I'm more for the GM's idea of everyone deciding how they wanna do it, but I also really don't wanna do the Arena idea, personally, for reasons others have already stated.

What would you suggest for the inevitable time when one person wants a pre-determined match and the other wants a competitive match?
So, decided to make a straw poll. Figure it's a good way to see what the players want to do. For the sake of this poll, "Pre-determined" means ALL matches will be pre-determined, and "Competitive" means, players still have the option to make the fight Pre-determined if they want to.

This will be a good way to see where everyone stands on it.

@tipssyCalibratorWell, if we don't want to make this competitive, then I'd like Ryuuto to have an absurd disadvantage against his opponent in round 1 so he can pull a Shikamaru. I just don't think a combat based tournament is all that fun when everything is pre-determined.
@Silver Carrot Well, we don't have to go as crazy as the Arena League rules. Basically, if two people wanna have at it, they just make a thread and go. We can still follow our own set of rules if we want.
@tipssyCalibrator I think the forest of death should happen first. It's better for establishing grudges and relationships for the tournament, and will make it more climactic. However, I'm not too keen on pre-deciding the matches for the tournament. I think if players want to pre-decide a match for dramatic flair, that can be an option to them, but I think it would be more fun to do it somewhat competitively.

My suggestion (and this is just a suggestion btw), once the fights are set up, make a single post in the IC thread with setup and introduction and whatnot, then link to an Arena thread where the actual fighting will take place. This will help prevent chaos in the thread of multiple fights going on at once. The fight will go on for a set number of posts or time limit, or whatever is decided to be fair, and then a panel of mystery judges (players picked by the GM with no personal stakes in the fight) will assess the fight and decide who should logically win. The winner then gets to write a "finisher" post to put in whatever dramatic flair is needed for the story.

It requires a bit more work than just pre-deciding the winners, but let's face it, I think everybody has their own desires for the tournament outcome, and I think it should come down to combat roleplaying ability.

Opinions everyone?
@tipssyCalibrator Only if he needs to end up educating someone. Haha.
Blue Team, Ryuuto's got his eyes on you... We can know check off the "glasses-wearing, conniving, veteran observing from the treetops" trope.
Ryuuto Koriyama

With the plan agreed upon, Ryuuto headed off to the woods to observe the assessment. As he neared the group of first years, He extended his hand, and tiny strings shot out from his fingers, up towards one of the tree branches. They snaked around the branch until he had a firm grip, and then... "Reel In!" The core of this ability was Newtonian Mechanics. Equal and opposite reactions, all that good stuff. When he tugged on an object, the object tugged back, and what that ultimately meant was that the lightest object moved. Ryuuto, being a bit small even for a boy his age, had far less mass than the sturdy oak, so when he reeled in his strings, it pulled him up towards the branch. He caught the branch, climbed up, adjusted his glasses, and watched the newbies from the trees.

"Capture the flag, eh?" It was too bad he wasn't playing. His abilities were almost too perfect for it. Even veterans would have a hard time stopping him from grabbing the flag from across the field. But, perhaps these new students had a few tricks of their own up their sleeves. He decided to observe the blue team, and found the tree closest to their flag, hoisting himself up for a good vantage point. He didn't care if anyone saw him; if anything it would be best if they saw him watching so they didn't freak out and start throwing fireballs or something at him when the saw him. He could probably convince them he was an official if they asked...

He took out his phone and stylus, and proceeded to take notes. Captain Morgan immediately assumed the roll of team leader and proceeded to announce his skillset. Ryuuto frantically scribbled notes while an app running in the background translated his handwriting into beautiful Times New Roman. "Let's see... that thug guy looks like he's ready for a street fight... Lightening bolts, eh? I'll need to have lightening rods and insulators if I face her... A doll army? Now that's interesting. Let's see what those little guys do." And so, Ryuuto observed the Blue team, formulating strategies and counter-strategies, quietly wondering if they would even realize what he was doing.
