My general take on magic is, for lack of a better word, Brent Weeks-ian. It's not as much about having access to a thesaurus of versatile multipurpose spells as it is being able to do one or two very specific, and clearly defined, things (that are not necessarily weak).

So if it's not necessarily raw power, but flexibility, that needs to be limited, that's perfect for me. As for what I specifically have in mind, that depends on how many people we get and what general direction they'd go in. Buuut I'm 90% leaning on something with mostly combat utility.

If you want a powerful combat spell, I'd probably want limits on how often it can be used, or some other drawback. We can talk when you have your idea.
Interested depending on your definition of limited magic.

Is it about scope? (can't flatten buildings) The nature of the spells? (can't create matter out of nothing etc) Their primary use? (no specifically combat-focused spells)

I guess a better way to ask would be... when you say limited magic, are you asking us not to go overboard with anything too overpowered, or are you asking us to actively use as little as possible?

Basically, I just don't want magic to trivialize the challenges I throw at you. There will definitely be limitations on scope, so no flattening buildings. As for the nature, I'd have to look at it at a case by case basis. For your creating matter out of nothing example, I would say I don't want you to create objects at will. Way too convenient. However, if you specify a single item you want stored in some pocket dimension that you can pull out at will, I'm cool with that. Also, generating small amounts of a general substance, like sand, would be okay, but then there's scope limitations. If you want combat spells, that's fine. I also want the total number of things any one person can do with magic to be limited. For example, Omenthemarked wants a communication spell. Sure. That's it for his magical abilities. If you have something in mind, let me know and I'll work with you.
I may be interested in participating if this gets enough attention. Id like to play a "Milo Thatch"-esque character. Perhaps a young yet well respected researcher of biological life. As low tier magic is acceptable, maybe he could use simple magics to communicate and understand life forms in order to record them. At most be able to "Comprehend Languages" or maybe "Calm Emotions" on certain animals?

Sounds good. I think that would be a nice ability for the group to have.
@Hmmm Oh cool, so it's like Shounen stuff. Now I'm even more interested.

Through the Portal

They've finally done it...

The mages of Chaosera have finally made a stable portal to another plane of existence. This vast new world is full of unknown lands, creatures, and resources, and all the kingdoms of the world have their eyes set on it. At first this lead to political tension, but then Chaosera agreed to share their portal with any kingdom willing to contribute to its power source. It seemed like a good deal, however, the energy it takes to sustain that portal is enormous; after a year of gathering resources, the combined kingdoms of the world obtained enough energy to keep the portal open for three minutes.

The first time the mages opened the portal, they used one minute of that energy. They conducted preliminary investigations, and ultimately determined that people could survive there. They described an open field and sunset skies, but the information was just enough to tease public interest. Then they made the announcement...

WANTED:

A team of brave adventurers to step through the portal. We welcome people from all contributing nations to sign up for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! Spend one year in this new world and be handsomely rewarded upon your return. We require naturalists, cartographers, alchemists, and any who believe they have something to offer the party. Spaces are limited, and only those deemed the most useful will be sent through. Once there, we require as much information about the realm as possible. Experiment, gather resources, and NAME WHATEVER YOU DISCOVER! So, if you're looking to carve yourself a place in history, apply today!

* * *

And that's the gist of it. You will be playing one of the brave explorers who steps through the portal. Your mission is simply to make yourselves useful to your kingdom, but beyond that, it's up to you! This will be part survival, part adventure, and part slice of life, since a large part of it will be characters interacting with one another. Yes, there will be danger. Lots of it. However, I don't want to divulge any details just yet.

As for character restrictions, make them human-ish. Elves, sure. Wolf people, maybe. Angels, undead beings, and sentient slimes... not for this RP. Magic is allowed, but should be very limited. We can talk about the details if you're interested. Also, keep in mind that your character should bring useful skills to the group, so some random vagabond off the street probably isn't gonna get a ticket.

If you join this RP, please be active. Post once every couple of days, and if you can't, please let me know so we're not stuck waiting for you.
I'm interested.
Saito Tajima

Saito returned Maemi's happy smile. It seemed like making friends with her was pretty easy. Even though he had no idea what kind of club Maemi wanted to start, just having some friends to hang out with on a regular basis was more than welcome. He gave a small nod, reaffirming his interest, and then he looked around warily at the others when Maemi mentioned asking the others to join. She would, unfortunately, have to ask them herself. It was nerve-wracking enough approaching Maemi with her openly welcoming demeanor. Asking others to do something? That was just too far out of his comfort zone.

However, Saito's attention was pulled back to the school. Arden opened the door, but the school looked just as run-down on the inside as it did from the outside. Maybe Elizabeth had strange tastes. Then, she disappeared. "Wait, what?" Saito stood dumbfounded, as his teacher, and now Arden, vanished into the empty schoolhouse. Sure, he had signed up for magic school, but just seeing people disappear like that was incredible. Where did they go? Could they still see outside? Were they millions of miles away? Maemi didn't wait long to get her answers and boldly plunged forth into the school. "Ah, w-wait..." He looked around nervously, and was glad he wasn't the only one apprehensive about this. However, he didn't want his new friend to leave him behind, so he took a deep breath and stepped through the threshold.

Saito wasn't sure what shocked him more, the fact that he had just seen three people disappear into thin air or the splendor of the hall he now stood in. He could barely even process Elizabeth's explanation of the Main Campus. He had never dreamed of setting foot inside a place so amazing. And there were magical supplies all over it too!? He didn't know where to begin! Well, perhaps he could begin with following Elizabeth to their own school, but he had a feeling he'd be paying the Main Campus many, many visits.

I'll post some time tomorrow.
Name: Raziel

Universe: Legacy of Kain

Appearance:

Personality: Raziel is a tormented soul beset on all sides by those who seek to manipulate him towards their own ends. As such, he is a stubborn and skeptical individual. He is wary of alliances with anyone, and single-minded in his pursuit of his own goals. Raziel is far from a kind creature, having no qualms slaughtering humans, vampires, and demons alike, and devouring their souls. However, he is not an outwardly cruel individual. He does not kill senselessly, and does not seek to torment his victims unless they truly ask for it. Raziel is also a confused being, unsure what the correct path for him is, and always striving to unravel his destiny.

Powers: Telekinesis - Raziel can shoot concussive blasts of kinetic energy, capable of moving objects or knocking back enemies. He can also use it to pull objects towards him.

Soul Eating - After killing a foe, Raziel can eat its soul, which restores his strength.

Astral Plane - Raziel can shift into the astral plan, a realm where souls and spirits reside. In this realm, Raziel can pass through certain physical barriers. The physical features of the material plane become warped, and he can often reach inaccessible areas in the plane. When Raziel's physical body becomes destroyed, he returns to the astral plane rather than dying. He can feast on the stray souls of this realm to restore his strength. To return to the material plane, he must possess a corps and burst forth from its flesh.

Supernatural Strength - Raziel possesses strength far beyond that of a mere human, allowing him to move heavy objects and scale sheer cliffs.

Free Will - Raziel has been removed from the cycle of life and death, and thus is free to shape his own destiny. He is the one being in his world that is not bound by a pre-ordained fate.

Skills: Seasoned Warrior - Raziel is a proficient fighter with swords, spears, and all standard weapons, as well as his bare hands.

Gliding - Though torn and tattered, the remains of Raziel's wings can act as sails, allowing him to glide great distances.

Brief Bio: As a human, Raziel was a Sarafan priest, a renowned vampire hunter. However, he was killed by a terrible creature and martyred, lauded as a hero for centuries... until the vampire Kain found his corpse and bestowed upon him the Dark Gift. Raziel served as Kain's lieutenant in his conquest of the world, but surpassed his master, growing a pair of wings just like the ancient vampire race. In a fit of rage and jealousy, Kain ripped out Raziel's wings and tossed him into the abyss where his body would be completely dissolved. However, Raziel was revived again by the Elder God, and made into the grotesque soul-eating creature he is now. Raziel emerged from the abyss and slaughtered Kain's generals one by one, then pursued his former master through time, all the while trying to discover his true purpose. He learned of the sinister plots of the Elder God and Moebius the Timestreamer, and allied with Kain to defeat them. However, in doing so, he allowed himself to be devoured by the material version of the Soul Reaver, wielded by Kain. Rather than fading into nothingness, though, Raziel found himself in this strange new world...

Equipment: Soul Reaver - A wraith blade bound to Raziel's arm that he can summon at will. The blade has an insatiable lust for souls... just as insatiable as Raziel's own. The more souls it devours, the more powerful it becomes until it unleashes a destructive blast of energy. The Soul Reaver was once imbued with several elemental powers, but they seem to have been lost in this new realm.
